There are many studies that have looked at the benefits of coffee and our overall health. Coffee contains antioxidants that are known to help prevent Type 2 Diabetes and reduce chances of certain cancers. But... There is evidence that coffee and caffeine actually increase blood sugar levels? So, Can diabetics drink coffee and what exactly does coffee do to their blood sugars? How about tea and diabetes? In this video, I explain what coffee and caffeine actually do to your blood sugars and how to prevent spikes in your blood sugar levels. Find out exactly how much coffee a diabetic can drink and how much caffeine is recommended.

@@ivyblessmyflylordjesus.per7008 I really maintain intermitent fasting which helps me improve my wellness. I start my day by just drinking black coffee around 1pm. Eat my lunch at3to4pm daily. The foods include high protein things such as chicken, or eggs, or any high protein diet, combine it with low carb veggies like cucumber, or brocoli or cauliflower, etc. Then if you want a, dessert just have 3pcs strawberry or ohe half apple. You can drink black coffee after eating if you want it be easily digested. In the afternoon, take a regular exercise by simply walking or dancing in one hour non stop. Then it is better if you only practice one meal plan a day but if you can't eat your dinner like what you've eaten earlier but smaller portions compared to your lunch. Stick to strawberries and apples as your regular fruits to avoid added much sugar. Until now my system is used to this. It's just a matter of being focused and disciplined🌹❤️💋

People often talk about drinking coffee without mentioning what - if anything - they put in the coffee. In the context of diabetes/insulin resistance, it is critical to differentiate between coffee consumed black vs. any other way.

Hello. VERY good point. This video is focused on just black coffee without additives. Unfortunately, caffeine stimulates different hormones as discussed here that tend to raise our blood sugar levels. Some people say it does not affect theirs-- but overall, we are seeing quite an increase in blood sugar levels after coffee intake. Hope this video was helpful for you.

Thank you for editing out my previous message. I did lose my temper a bit, like Jeremy Corbyn, yemach shemo. Maybe I'd been drinking too much coffee!?! 😅 Your moderation closing remark was very helpful even though many people have said it. The main thing is that the internet is far too prescriptive and everyone's telling you what to do. Books like The Green Pharmacy by Dr James Duke are much better. It is almost holy as my friend told me. The internet is sadly not ALTRUISTIC. People need to be more caring. And the whole internet needs censoring, as the Chinese do, but not in the same way. PLEASE DON'T DELETE THIS MESSAGE BECAUSE MILLIONS OF PEOPLE NEED TO READ IT! Good wishes to you for helping people in your field and beyond, possibly 😢😊

People often have a small heating unit to keep their coffee warm as they sip it slowly so that they go through it in about an hour's time. To me, this would mean that drinking coffee in this way would be taking micro doses of the caffeine over time whereas taking the caffeine pill would be a sudden jolt to the system (unless it's designed to release the caffeine slowly). Also, if we get any joy from drinking coffee, the endorphins released by the brain may offset the effects of the adrenaline response of the coffee. Drinking a tablet with a glass of water is unlikely to trigger the release of endorphins.

Aren't the CGM's primarily for type 1 diabetics ? I'm a type 2 and manage it with diet (2MD), no drugs and fasting. I drink black coffee in the morning with my omelet breakfast and if any thing my glucose level drops from my dawn effect afterwards. Everyone is different and use of the glucose meter monitoring will let you know what affects you and by how much, so one can get the most control possible.
@thevoiceofdiabetes

Hi Warren, CGM's are used for both type 1 and type 2-- I wish more people were able to get them. Even for non diabetics, it's good to wear one to see how different food affects glucose levels. It's very true that food affects us so differently.

I use Allulose (6gr) in my 1 cup of coffee in the morning, and the same amount in my green tea, black tea Matcha tea mix. The Allulose helps to reduce blood sugar levels, and also to bunt glucose release from other glucose/sugar rich foods consumed at the same time. I consume small amounts of Allulose (2gr-3gr) when I consume any carbohydrate. Not certain how well Allulose works with caffeine.

Good point. Drugs are made by bacterial fermentation and by turning oil (petroleum) into drugs. I would guess that a caffeine pill is a drug. The action of a drug is different than the effects of something natural. Of course not everything natural is good for us. Like poison ivy. It’s natural but not good for us. As a holistic physician I make nutritional recommendations, especially with certain conditions. I tell people what an ideal might be, but I don’t want them feeling bad if they only reach 90% of the ideal. If people really miss a food item they love, but gave it up based on my recommendation, I’ll suggest that they eat food, but rarely. If someone one really misses chocolate, I might suggest one or two pieces a week. I will also ask them to Enjoy the chocolate and to eat it in a mindful way. A lot of people won’t want to stop with one it two pieces. They want the whole chocolate bar (or cake). With coffee learning about the problem with glucose is important. The next step is deciding if you want to change that habit. If you do, then think of your choices: 1) quit entirely, 2) cut back on the amount, 3) consider tapering, and decide how fast you want to taper.

You say cawfee, just like we do in Jersey City NJ..LOL... Anyway, I'm not a diabetic, but I'm on the borderline of prediabetes. I monitor my glucose levels just to be aware. About an hour after drinking a cup of coffee (with half and half, no sugar), my sugar goes up around 10-15 points. I also tested myself using Stevia and Sucralose (Splenda) in my coffee. Stevia (with erythritol) was the same as having no sugar, but Splenda (with Maltodextrin) gave me a 25 point spike just like sugar. After the erythritol blood clotting study findings, I don't use any sweetener anymore. I have gotten use to no sweetener. What I do now; 30 minutes after every meal, I go on my exercise bike for about 15-30 minutes. It definitely lessens any possible sugar spike.

@thevoiceofdiabetes
@thevoiceofdiabetes 2 жыл бұрын
Decaf is definitely a better option... less caffeine. There are some studies that have looked at gut health-- probiotic use, in particular, to help people with type 2 DM. I am not a fan of the keto diet-- Soon, I will have a video on this as to why. However, I do support a low-carb diet, higher in vegetables and lean protein. Thanks for your questions and comment, David!

What about decaf coffee? I wish you had mentioned that as an alternative, since just 'one cup of coffee a day' just isn't an option for me. Since decaf obviously doesn't have caffiene, I presume it's an ok alternative? I will have to also check the internet to see if decaf coffee stll has antioxidants, and will need to find a 'safe' decaf that uses water extraction vs chemical extraction. Otherwise good video.
@thevoiceofdiabetes

Hi Joe, great point. I should have addressed that but I’ll have a video on that soon. Decaf is a better option, less caffeine and less blood sugar spike. I did wear a continuous glucose monitor and caffeine did spike my sugar even though I’m not a diabetic. I didn’t see the exact spike with decaf. Moderation is key obviously but I would say 2 cups decaf and 1 regular a day would be a better alternative. Hope that helps. That’s for the great feedback 😀

@@thevoiceofdiabetes - Thank you for the additional information. I just purchased some Swiss water extraction coffee (vs chemical extraction) based on the information in your video and appreciate your response. I also looked on the web and found that the Swiss water extraction method takes out the caffeine but leaves the beneficial antioxidants. I have another suggestion: I was looking at your website for other blood sugar related information and noticed the About tab didn't have your credentials. Are you an MD, nutritionist or other medical professional? You mentioned you have patients so I presume you are, though it's always good to know this so when we refer others they usually ask for the persons professional credentials. Thanks again and look forward to my (decaf) coffee!

My bloodsugar went up one point consistently after one 10 oz cup of black coffee. Caffeine affects cortisol levels.....which does affect blood sugar. So it can put you in a mild state of stress which is bad for blood sugar.
