Today on the show I had Klaus Badelt, the founder of Filmhub.com. We do a deep dive in the state of independent film and self-distribution. We also discuss the Distribber debacle and how filmmakers can get access to their films back from Distribber.
Klaus is not only a tech entrepreneur he also writes the occasional score for feature films including The Thin Red Line, The Prince of Egypt, Gladiator, and Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.
His company FilmHub is disrupting the way indie films are released into the ever-changing marketplace. Their data-driven platform helps independent films worldwide streaming releases. They take no rights, charge no fees, provide transparent analytics and much better rates than the traditional film distribution industry.
Enjoy my epic conversation with Klaus Badelt.

Take a page from the punk rock playbook! I did a label for 10 years and I figured out that if you simply buy things yourself, you keep the damn money! Simple! Everyone is so seduced by the dream, but there is no better dream than keeping your content and selling it!

I’ve went through Filmhub with my film “Pick A Side” after speaking with distributors and seeing some of these outrageous contracts deals where I would basically be giving them my movie and paying them to take it from me. Since being on Filmhub my film has made its budget back and it’s been on Filmhub for about 12 months. I am an independent filmmaker that self do cancer my film and have complete ownership of it. I definitely believe in Filmhub and would recommend it to anyone looking into getting their film out there without getting their leg pulled.

I really want to hear more from indie filmmakers who've created a pay-per-view platform to self distribute their films and built an audience by having at least 4films a year. Or like a movie for every season/Holliday of the year. I've always thought this would work with good marketing.

Pay per view is pretty much dead, per this video. AVOD is the fastest growing income generator for filmmakers, with Tubi being the lead, and Prime after that. I put some award winning short films on Amazon for PPV, and made few dollars. I went with a traditional predatory distributor for my first film, and got zero, even though we were the hottest product for an entire year, and got distribution in 25 countries. FilmHub and IndieRights seem like the best current option by far.

Thanks Alex. You held my hand while I learnt how to edit these past four years. Now i'm ready to embark on showing the film to the wider world. Thank you again for this episode!

Wow, I remember discovering Klaus Badelt's music back in the early 2000s with The Time Machine, but I had no idea he founded the aggregator I used for my film. Really great to hear him talk about the business! Hope you weren't kidding about having him back for an episode about film scoring because I'd love to see that. Would especially love to hear about his work on The Promise.

This was a great broadcast. The streaming , direct to consumer model is the new indie movement. Except this isn't about the content, it's a revolution of distribution. Now we all should aspire to be filmprenuers. Awesome work Alex!

My experience with film hub is completely different. They lie about the money they are not transparent and right now I'm in the process of hiring an attorney because there's money missing and they refuse to respond to emails. This company will eventually go down just like distribber did by doing these tactics.

Nobody comes out and just says it point blank: THE INDUSTRY Is FULL OF PEOPLE MAKING MONEY ON OTHER ARTISTS! LEECHES! Just make your damn work, KEEP the rights to it, and sell it for whatever you get for it. EASY! I feel like film is going through the same exact growing pains that happened to the music industry before punk rock. 1977....people pressing their own 7"s.....sometimes selling tons....now legends! And the irony? The industry signed them!!!! Stop using traditional channels! It's an idiots game dude. Through and through. THEY will follow YOU. Just lead the way. Trust someone who did the shit. The game is simple. Keep ownership. Spend what you can. Own it. Sell it forever. Boom. Stop crying baby. These are happy tears. "Boo hoo, my dream didn't come true and a better dream came into reality"....

Filmhub released my feature film "Neon Tank" in September. I can say so far, I am impressed with the team. I chose to go with Filmhub, rather than release my film soley on Amazon Prime Video, because I liked how Filmhub represented my project to the channels. They clearly have insight into what these channels require. Neon Tank is now on Amazon Prime Video UK & US as well as international channels such as, Mometu, Hoopla, EmblazeTV, Reveel and many more. How has anyone else found this process?

The problem with self distribution is then the marketing is up to the filmmaker and that equals small money most of the time from an aggregator. Whereas, if you go through a distributor then they can get it into more location and pay you. Where and who are these marketers that we can all hire? This list is hidden from indie filmmakers and you can't find it on the web. Are their charges within reason? affordable? I would contact Alex Ouzas , Australian filmmaker/producer who knows how to make money through distribution, funding films, etc and teaches it for a price

Indie film hustle is amazing! But, Run from Filmhub, iv had the worst experience ever. Truth be told I kinda chose them after watching many videos like this, that are very informative and helpful nonetheless. But, my experience was a complete disaster. I spent three years making a great feature film that qualified for the 2023 Academy awards. I had done amazing marketing and advertising producing including traction. After 3 months they paid me $2:35 and would not provide any data, they are not transparent in anyway and lied endlessly.
