Hey! I'm Alanna - a thirty-something documenting my life as a Canadian living in England.
I share the ups and downs of an expat living abroad and what it's really like living in the UK. It's not always easy, but there's been so many wonderful experiences, too. I post a KZfaq video every Tuesday plus an additional video every Saturday on Patreon + YT Memberships. I also livestream every Wednesday and Sunday at 5:30pm GMT/BST on Twitch.

Dear girl, you had me in stitches!! 😅 Vaux and Brakespear are breweries, btw. As you were zooming along the street, you twice passed shops with the name Stow. It was lovely. As for the Welsh place names, well nobody outside Wales gets those correctly. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿. More, please. Perhaps the oldest church in each country in the UK?

At least 3 of the oldest pubs in England are in Nottingham city centre. All 3 argue about which is oldest, but it is accepted that the oldest inn in England is The (Ye) Old Trip to Jerusalem, which is partially within caves in Castle rock itself, and includes an extant shaft up to the mediæval castle for the delivery of beers.

The Adam & Eve in Norwich must be close to one of the oldest in the UK. The earliest reference to a tavern on its site was in 1241 or 1249 as a brewhouse used by workmen building the nearby cathedral.[1] The brewhouse was owned by Benedictine monks at the nearby Great Hospital It was the last pub in Norwich to serve ale from the barrel, until a bar was installed in 1971.

Yeah that was the only thing I think I would have done better than Alanna in the whole video, didn't know any of the smaller place names at all including Stow but the moment I saw that sign I knew that was the village name to be looking for in the Cotswolds, and then I'd have looked further away from Cirencester and Cheltenham because the sign was pointing them both the same way.. but a pretty good effort tbh!, and I have never heard of one of these pubs despite caring about older pubs lol so genuinely wasn't shocked by any missing knowledge etc except perhaps mispronouncing Hereford 🙃 Alanna can be too hard on herself 😂

Some of these are the oldest inns. An inn has accomodation for guests, where a pub technically doesn't. The Old Trip to Jerusalem us the oldest pub in the UK and The Fighting Cocks (in St Albans) is the oldest pub in the UK that has never been anything other than a pub - The Old Trip was a private residence for a while. A few other pubs near The Old Trip also claim to be older. Literally none of them are in the video though!

22:26 So, as you asked, I looked up the etymology on Needingworth. The second element of the name, "worth," is a common element in English place-names and refers to an enclosure or estate. The first element "Needing" is thought to be derived from a lost Old English name Hnydda of Anglo-Saxon origin. Hnydda is probably a nickname related to the English words "nod," "noddle," and "nuddle" (regional English), which mean "to push." therefore, Needingworth could mean "enclosure of Hnydda's people.". I hope that is helpful for you and useful in daily conversations. See The University of Nottingham's Survey of English Place-Names for more.

I'm amazed at how well you managed these! You missed a trick in the Cambridgeshire one when you scooted past a blue footpath signpost which would have given you mileage to wherever it was going which could possibly have given you a clue once you'd got the county sussed. Love your 'butchering' of both English and Welsh placenames! They are obvious when you've grown up with them, but otherwise I admit they are tricky! FYI 'Hereford' is pronounced 'Herry-fud', and Cirencester is, unusually, pretty much as it's written- but with the 'C's sounding as an 'S', so Siren- sester'

That was pretty good, Alanna! I would have got the Stow one quicker, you missed an early clue, but you probably got the others quicker than I could. When you zoom in on road signs, the ones with coloured backgrounds will be on major roads and give directions to the nearest major towns which could be many miles away - helpful to get you in the right general area, but then you need to concentrate on the signs with white backgrounds which give you the local villages and small mileages which get you much nearer to the location.

People are always quick to point out mistakes on this sort of thing, particularly if you play in a different way to what they might, but you have totally proved that you can do this, even in a country where you don't even know how to pronounce some of the names! Good going. But the more important point is that anyone could post a video of them doing Geoguessr, the value of the video is its entertainment, while the skills demonstated are part of that I think the personality and commentary are way more important. Just like Geowizard, he might not be the world's top Geoguessr player his personality and commentary are genius. Your comments about Hermes and the sign for the church... outstanding.

Suggestion: Have you thought about shopping? Specifically, almost until the industrial revolution (in Britain) there wasn't any shopping as we think of it. Leaving aside daily requirements like food, nearly everything was made at home / on the farm, or custom-ordered from a craftsperson. Want a new dress? You either make it yourself or have the local seamstress do it. Want a new bed? Here's a hammer, or there's the carpenter. It was only with mass-production for the Empire that it became cost-effective for Wedgewood, Chippendale, etc. to engage in speculative manufacture: make it, then try to sell it. That led to mail-order catalogues, shops, big display-windows to show what they stocked, and shopping arcades, such as Burlington Arcade in London. Those, respectively, became modern online shopping and shopping centres.

Yip, Ye Olde Man and Scythe is in Bolton and is classed as the UK's 4th oldest pub. Opposite is Ye Olde Pasty Shoppe, considered to be one of the best in the north west. Also not that far from the Porch House in Stow is the Highwayman in Burford that also claims to be the oldest pub.

I'm actually waiting on a delivery from Evri (aka Hermes), will it arrive on time? Unlikely. Will it be thrown over the fence and left in the rain in someone else's property? Highly likely.
