Working this week to understand why my engine has low compression on one cylinder, I dream up a test to see where the pressure is leaking from using items I have lying around.

That balloon tester was a stroke of genius Ryan. I love it. 👍

Well done and I must say: very smart diagnostic method!!! No need to buy expensive tools when you have a balloon laying around 😁 I guess the compression is a bit on the lower side, but it is not terrible. A tip for you: Add a tiny squirt of engine oil into the cylinders and move the engine back and forth and sideways to get the oil in between of the cylinder wall and the piston. Then do a new compression test. If it reads better values it indicates compression loss because of worn cylinder, piston or rings. If it reads the same values, the problem is related to the top.

Thank you, it took me a few days of thinking about the issue, then I had this idea. Luckily for me it worked (this time) Cheers Ryan

great video Ryan, very modest, honest and extremely helpful to me trying to get compression to remedy one very low compression on one cylinder of my 250 G5 thanks

Awesome idea on the leak down side, it may be a bodge idea tool but if it does what you need then all is good. The compression will come up a bit once oil has flowed around, dry rings never seal properly. To check just squirt a bit of oil down the plug holes and re test

Thanks Chris for your encouragement. I'm hoping compression will be okay when engine's warm and oiled up properly. Cheers. Ryan.

Mate your determination and patience is outstanding - many would have given up before now. The detailed videography and description of your thought process has truly been inspirational. I am nearly completed on my superdream rebuild and expect to encounter some issues ahead when I get the bike running so I can refer to your logical approach so thanks for sharing. Philip from New Zealand.

Thank you Phil, I'm a self confessed total amateur just learning from trial and error, but if I do anything that helps someone else then that's just a massive bonus. 😀😀

Glad to see you found the issue, we've all made silly mistakes and forgot stuff Haha. That's why I triple check everything to avoid finding something later on and swearing lots Haha.

Thanks Lewis, I've still got lots to learn and I hope I will at least learn from my own mistakes. ( and I've been heavily editing out the swearing recently) 😀

Well done, that's got to be the most unorthodox leak down test I've seen but it did the job. For future if you can make something with a plug thread on one end and a schrader valve on the other you can use a bicycle pump to pressurise the cylinder.There is enough compression to start the engine and you may find it increases once hot and its been run a while. Good luck with the electrics.
@RyansGarageUK2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Colin, I'm hoping that the compression will be okay now, but the electrics are unlikely to be just a simple test and continue.

Found the link above at 180 psi, hope it does when its hot.

well done that man! love it when an idea works out. I was then thinking, so lets start it on the bench next but then, outta time, another video over - roll on next video.
@RyansGarageUK2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Tim, I was thinking of trying to run it on a bench, but the external components and wiring leads me towards feeling I need to put it in the frame, which I might later regret. 😀

Would this be a common cause for compression loss on most bikes? According to my mechanic, my enfield has critically low compression, but he reckons he can't fix it because it's requiring a full engine rebuild. A fix like this seems like something I could learn to do myself though, and I'd love to have a go at it.
@RyansGarageUK2 жыл бұрын
Hi, there are not many possible causes for loss of compression, and they can all be addressed by only working on the cylinder head. I found the challenge enjoyable and whilst I made mistakes along the way, I felt huge sense of achievement when i got this running myself. I can only recommend you give it a try if you would like to learn. 😀

Hey mate, just a question. My bike, cbr 600 rr 2004, is lately stalling in neutral at stops even clutched in and also while riding will lose power for a second or two or will jerk forward sometimes as I deccelerate. Do you have any idea what the issue might be? Thanks
@RyansGarageUK2 жыл бұрын
Hi Tilemahos, I'm no expert at all, but your description to me sounds like a dirty carb, but I don't honestly know if your bike has carbs or if its Injected? If you do have carbs I'd strat with removing and at least cleaning out with carb cleaner before you spend any money. Although I'm sure others may suggest something else. Ryan

@@RyansGarageUK Thanks a lot Ryan. It is fuel injected but I'm taking in consideration the cleanning suggestion.

Did your wife ever comment on the red ring around your mouth (compression test) and believe that you have been using the hoover? a lot of people did in the past. ps i don't do that now
@RyansGarageUK2 жыл бұрын
Hi Beowulf, no she didn't because I am always careful to smere a little lipstick on my collar so she believes I'm having an affair and not just wasting hours and hours on an old motorbike in the garage. 😁

I thought 150psi was a normal reading, not 90psi??
@RyansGarageUK Жыл бұрын
Hi Simon, you may be correct, and i hadnt checked it recently, but i now know my starter motor was knackered when last checked, and its hadnt been ran yet. So may be worth i recheck that again.
