ended up smoking from what I think is resistor. i asked around on reddit for help, but all they said was to recap it, which is not currently an issue. either way its still a beautiful piece of history!

You definitely need to read up on restoring old radios. You will need to replace all the capacitors

All Capacitors should be replaced as they can get electrically leaky and can go to short and can burn out the power transformer! the burnt resistor was probable the result of a bad capacitor! that transformer on the speaker looks like a small power transformer which will not work correctly as an output transformer. You have a lot to read up on repairing antique radios.
