Can I Make A Spitfire Fly Slowly?

I'm sure it can be done but can I do it? That's the question! I'm using the same undercambered wing section I've used successfully on the 'Yoyo' series of models but on a tapered wing like the Spitfire anything could happen, follow along and tell me what you think, cheers

Cliff I would have never thought you could make a indoor flyer prettier than the sportster. Then you said Spitfire...I'm in. Looking great. That wing shape. Awesome.

Cliff if the moving wings don’t work you will still have a little Spitfire. I think that any movement of wings will lose lift but you don’t know until you try. Looks great. Jeff in LA USA

That's true Jeff, perhaps I should make an all-moving fin just in case the ailerons aren't very effective 🤔👍

Man those wings look cool . I just sliced my first set of sliced ribs , for a peanut Nieuport bebe bodied monoplane I'm working on . That laser would have come in handy , but then I wouldn't have learned anything . Can't wait to see both of these slow flyers in action .

Sounds interesting DM, you can only really truly appreciate a laser if you spent the last 40 years cutting it all out by hand 😁👍

Also about undercambered airfoils I made an AVRO Type F with wing warping, RC model, the pitching up actually caused the wing with the more positive AOA to have way too much drag, like it transitioned into parachute territory and the model on it's initial flights would drop it's positive AOA wing like a stone. Was very perplexing until I figured it out. You may want to set the pitcheron wings up with an analogue of the Tiger Moth's full scale ailerons up to down ratio so you don't have your lifting wing become a parachute..

Well Cliff, I beat you by at least 27 years. I built the American made and sold Comet printed wood Spitfire kit and substituted an undercambered airfoil for the flat bottomed one. I also used Mylar balloon as the covering, and with two loops of whatever was that olive green rubber they supplied it with, it was able to stooge along at about 5~7 mph? a little faster than walking speed. I gave that model away and regret it now that some very nice micro RC systems are available, I don't think that finished model weighed more than an ounce. Comet's strip wood and their printed balsa stock wasn't by any stretch contest quality, and I used their plastic propeller.

I had an idea for a slow-fly Spitfire to be made out of foam. Under-cambered wing, with maybe a bit of CF rod for a spar. Haven't got far with it, other than a half-built prototype.

Sounds like a good idea Daz, kinking the wing at the 'spar' position and adding a little carbon makes for a very strong wing 👍

I also thought of adding over-sized ailerons to give it better roll authority. Make them longer, not wider....

Great idea Cliff to make a slow flyng Spitfire!! On the covering front a lot of later MK Spitfires were silver, I'm sure you could get a silver plastic! now that would look cool, great job and looking forward to part 2 😀👍

Another great project. If you can find very thin plastic bags in green and brown...you can pre cut the camo...and glue the sections together....and then use to cover the aircraft 😊

Hi Cliff, .. I've wondered about your experiment, myself .. there are some exceptionally slow flyer models (foam) .. that look like they are really fun to fly. I wouldn't care if they are slower than scale .. where, most models now are faster than scale. Hope it works! .. :)

@@CliffHarveyRCPlanes Yes Cliff, .. I did just now, watch your Winnard Perch Spitfire flight. It does look it flies slower than a conventional wing, eh? Nice idea about the controlling of these undercambered wings. I believe the Fokker Eindecker had some kind of wing twisting control system, too.
