So, all the damage was caused by oil starvation due to the filter being installed backwards. That was a major bonehead move. Some people should not do their own maintenance.

You gotta wonder how many of those filters were put in backwards for all these many years and how many motors seized cause of it 🤔🤔🤔

That oil filter is a prime example of my motto as a mechanic: its always something dumb. When things don't add up, always take a step back and start checking the easy things that may or may not be related to the problem at hand. Has saved me countless hours of troubleshooting.

Here is a tip , Aluminum foil would work great as the "surgical blanket" in that case. I know that first hand 😉

The carbs on four trax are difficult and easy at the same time ,the short choke plunger is the correct one has the seal on piston and on the bottom . spring and cap are a match to plunger some have the clip. the cable is also and its routing. One more clip is at lever and of cable 3 to 4 adjustments. partzilla had one last year(choke plunger kit) keep the jet needle clip in the middle only.Under plastic cover on carb is a adjustment for throttle plate and carb piston cut away for off idle,two small tags that move by bending making less gap or more this synks the two to open at the same time (till it touches) Before removing carb screw in idle mixture screw till it dies if it dies! if not needle jet, jet needle needs replaced. If it dies turn out 2 full turn. than do what is called a idle drop! ( Last step to tune up) engine warm turn mixture screw out till 100 rpm drop, Turn in till 100 rpm drop than 1 full turn out set idle in all three steps carb is set to 1% co no miss or hesitation off idle. All 6 things affect Idle,hesitation, plug fouling ,its a honda!

How incredible is that?!?! Toasted engine because someone pulled a total bonehead, putting a filter in backwards!! I’m still blown away!! Nice restoration Mustie!! You are a master!!

I think the main problem you were having with the plastic welding gun was that even on the case it was named a "WEDING" gun. 😅 amazing revival as always!

you pretty much did the cam installation as recommended in the manual , they do recommend filling the end cap on the cam with grease although the oil eventually does get in there anyways ,

Just a tip: if you position the air nozzle adjacent to the hole you want to clear rather than directly into it and blow across or 'sideways' from the hole, it causes a 'vacuum' inside the hole, sucking the debris out rather than pushing them further in.

wow.. im surprized honda made a design that would allow you to install the oil filter in backwards and stave it for oil .. learn something new every day ... good catch

Never noticed the Cougar before! I bought a '67 in college back in 98 from my landlord. Only had 65,000 miles on it. He had 3 late 60's Cougars and 2 80's Avanti II. Loved that car!
