This is my review of the Universal Zoom Mark IV eyepiece from Baader Planetarium. It's a great zoom eyepiece especially for beginners and I think that it’s one of the best zoom eyepieces in it’s price category. It’s a great upgrade for existings eyepieces like the ones the telescopes usually come with.

Very informative and nicely presented video Bogdan. Keep it up! One thing I would say in favour of the zoom, is that it is a good eyepiece for finding the “right” magnification for some faint fuzzies; as you zoom in, the sky gets darker making the object stand out, but if you zoom in too much the object gets too spread out and you lose it again. Once you’ve found the perfect magnification, you can put your premium eyepiece in, if you think it’s worth it. It’s also fun to zoom in on tight doubles and watch them go from a single point, to egg shaped to peanut shaped then fully resolved! I also find zooms useful for finding objects - start with low power view for star hopping then up the magnification when you’ve found your object.

Great review and a great eyepiece, I might add. I was so surprised by the view. It is not a bright as my Televue Delos 10mm and the FOV is not as wide but unbelievably, it is a tad sharper when viewing Saturn and Jupiter. 😊

I’ve tried the Celestron 8 - 24 mm Zoom. It is not noticeably dimmer than my 18 mm Televue Radian. For its low cost compared to the Baader Zoom, I think it is a good grab and go eyepiece solution. No surprise that-the Baader Zoom are no comparison to your Televue lenses. Good review.

I tried the Baader zoom in the beginning, as mentiond image quality and sharpness where ok, though especially at 24mm the Fov is really lacking. I'd recommend every beginner to get a _good_ wide angle eyepiece in the beginning, it's the single biggest first upgrade! I'm still using my TV ethos 21mm most of the time (only seldomly using the 8mm ethos or going down to the 3.7mm one)

When you buy a Celestron 10 inch dob you get a 4 mm and a 20 mm and nothing in between. Adding a zoom instead of a rack full of eye pieces becomes a financial advantage. And a Hyperion is a lot better advantage than going with the Celestron zoom which is a whole lot cheaper both dollar wise and quality wise.

@Dynamic Hypnotic That is indeed a very strong argument in favor of zoom eyepieces in general and it's especially true for the Hyperion Mark IV from Baader. Two of them in a binoviewer configuration are awesome.
@martinkearns2039

This zoom eyepiece does not work so well with the Denkmeier binowiewer that offers three different magnification factors. It hard to see the whole field in some of the longer focal length settings and while the whole field is visible in the 8mm focal length setting for some reason there were lots of eye floaters visible. The whole combination of binoviewer and zoom eyepiece work like a sort of ophthalmic instrument for examining the eye. The Denkmeier works far better with single eyepieces so avoid the Denkmeier/Baader combination.

I have this eyepiece and I like it! I have a dobson 8' reflector and the reason I like this is because I no longer loose a planet I am observing during changing of the eyepiece, or simply after a small overcorrection whit the telescope. Now I can simply "lock" on the planet, zoom in and if I loose the planet in my field of view, I simply zoom back, find it again and zoom back in.

These are very informative videos! I have glasses and a stigmatizem, what kind of eye relief do you suggest for a 26mm and a 10 mm eyepiece? Do you have a favorite that won't break the bank?
@BogdanDamian
@BogdanDamian Жыл бұрын
@lazernteebbee Thank you! The required eye relief depends a bit on how far your glasses are from your eyes when wearing them, but as a rule of thumb anything over 20mm of eye relief is a good thing. For the shorter 10mm focal length I would recommend the Baader Hyperion 10mm and for the 26mm focal length I can recommend the Omegon SWAN 26mm.

Excellent review Bogdan. As a beginner, just wondering between zoom lenses vs fixed FL eyepieces. What would you suggest? I want to graduate to astrophotography and intend to use the lenses on which I’m investing now ..
@BogdanDamian
@BogdanDamian 2 жыл бұрын
@Aru B Thank you! Zoom eyepieces are great because they are easy to use especially if you are just starting with astronomy. The quality can be decent and they offer great flexibility. Fixed focal length eyepieces can offer higher quality optics with better specs like wider AFOV or longer eye relief. They also cost considerably more. I'm no expert, but for astrophotography you usually don't use eyepieces but Barlow lenses instead. You basically attach the camera directly to the Barlow lens and take videos of the night sky. That's why for astrophotography you don't necessarily need to factor in your current eyepiece decision. In my opinion you should get the eyepiece that you think will enable you to enjoy this wonderful hobby right now.

Thanks for the informative review. I was debating on whether to purchase a Baader zoom for my c8 sct that due to its long focal length produces a narrow field of view and a 48° field at the lowest power setting isn't particularly attractive. I don't think the convince of not having to change out eyepieces outweigh the sacrificing the view. Am I right about this? I would like to hear different opinions if possible.
@BogdanDamian
@BogdanDamian 3 жыл бұрын
@Horacio Dortona I agree with you. If you have the possibility to get dedicated eyepieces for the desired focal lengths, then I would recommend doing so. Going this way will give you better results and is more future proof.

@BogdanDamian
@BogdanDamian 3 жыл бұрын
@Nicolae Voiculescu Hi! Even though the Hyperion eyepieces are a bit more expensive, I'd still go with Baader instead of Celestron. The Hyperion eyepieces have a wider AFOV (68° vs. 60°), a longer eye relief (20mm vs 16mm) and can be used within the vast and excellent Baader accessory universe. The optics employed by Baader are in my opinion also a bit better than those used by Celestron in their eyepieces.

Hypothetical, and maybe a daft question, but I’ll ask anyway 😃 …..whilst I’m waiting for the 2” powermate “Barlow” to arrive (3 to 5 week delivery quoted), and therefore can’t test for myself, I was wondering if you could use a Baader zoom, with its 2.25x Barlow, and add it to the 2x powermate? Would it essentially creat a 4.5x Barlow? I’m using it on the AX103, which in theory only has max useful magnification of 206x, so this would be overkill, but nonetheless wondered what you thought? Maybe on my wife’s Celeste on 8HD it could be better, even with the loss of light through so much glass?
@BogdanDamian
@BogdanDamian 2 жыл бұрын
@Alan price Yes, by combining those two you would get a magnification power of roughly 4.25x. I don't know how "usable" this would be though. Not only that the 4.25x would be overkill for visual observations, but the increased eye relief might pose a problem too. A normal Barlow usually extends the eye relief by a few mm. Using two Barlows can extend the value for eye relief beyond the manufacturer's intended position, resulting in vignetting with many eyepieces. It would be a fun experiment though 😃 The 8HD would be well suited for this experiment.

The APM SuperZoom also has a 2" barrel option, but the issue seems to be that the way they did it makes the 1.25" barrel less usable due to focus issues, and there's a risk the 1.25" barrel might hit a 2" diagonal's prism or mirror. The Leica 8.9-17.8mm zoom technically has neither a 1.25" nor 2" barrel, but there are 2" adapters from APM and Starlight. And of course, if you're willing to dedicate a generic 1.25" to 2" adapter to a zoom eyepiece, any 1.25" zoom eyepiece can have a 2" barrel.

Thanks for video. Your eye relief measurements are wrong. It's more like 10mm relief at the 8mm setting and around 18mm relief at the 24mm setting. I cannot see the field stop at all with my glasses at the 8mm setting - 8mm is much too short for glasses. I have the Mark IV and don't know how you can view with glassed below 15mm.
@BogdanDamian
@BogdanDamian 2 жыл бұрын
@Nate M Thanks for your input. The measurements in the video I got directly from Baader's specs sheet for the Zoom Mark lV: www.baader-planetarium.com/de/downloads/dl/file/id/357/product/3117/hyperion_universal_zoom_mark_iv_specifications_drawing_and_technical_data.pdf Maybe the distance from my glasses to the eyepiece lens is just enough for me to see the whole FOV if I press my eye into the eyecup hard enough. However, even though I'm able to do that, I still prefer observing without glasses when using the Mark IV. It's much more comfortable that way.

I have many eyepiece's and Zoom is more of a gimmick IMHO. I have from 4.8mm to 40mm and very good 1.25 Barlow and 2" Barlow for 2" eyepieces I have 8/15/21/26/34 and the views are far better and have a 62 to 68 FOV. on all my 2" Zoom can not even get close to that combo. But Zoom is OK for a grab and go scope for a quick look. Scope I use 80/90mm/120mm 150mm refractor and 9.25 SCT. Great demo.

I disagree completely. The Baader zoom can often out perform my other $100+ eyepieces because it can find the perfect FL per what I’m looking at. Sure if you have an eyepiece at the perfect focal length, you’ll have better views. I don’t really use my zoom for DSO, mainly planets, and for that it’s perfect.
