it would be fun to see what Japanese people thought of different language speakers speaking Japanese phrases. like British English speaking a Japanese phrase, see the nuances of our accents on their language.

Love these interviews with people on the street. Would love to see more. Hope this video gains a lot of traction.

@@mathis8210 It seems he learned english in a similar manner to me. Learning the language piece meal from several different sources and many different examples. Like I have a base of a dorset accent (RP accent), since thats the correct english Iearned through exposure. But i also copied subtle nuances of how my filipino mother speaks english. And know pronounciations of specific words in the american manner due to friends and the simpsons. With Yuta he clearly started learning in Katakana form and then later corrected himself but kept the echoes of the accent he memorised. Later he likely encountered the difference between L and R because i hear him emphasising the R sound, overcompensating to sound more american. He says his vowels in a rather Japanese manner. But then he learned certain words in the softer english pronunciation. Like when he says more. He says Maw like an english person as opposed to the hard R Morrr. If he wanted he could totally just live somewhere english speaking 9for like 2 years) and completely remove the kinks to sound completely authentic.

@@mathis8210 To me his accent has strong syllabic stress that I hear from Chinese speakers, but has a lot of the vowel sounds that I know from Japanese accents. A bit of australian cadence though.

And I understood pretty much all of it. since im from the south. Florida to be exact. although it doesn't really feel southern at all to be honest. well at least where im from. my bff might say otherwise since he grew up on a farm.

@@Floridamangaming729 If you live in South Florida like Dade, Broward, Orange, etc county then yeah it doesn't feel southern, but the more Northern you go the more Southern it gets.

I've never seen this channel before and have no (specific) interest in Japan (although I am very interested) so it didn't occur to me for a second that his segment was japanese, I guess italian! I found it realy hard to pinpoint, I assumed it was a non-native European who has lived in the UK for a long time as the accent is clearly following a broad "English" accent.

A more standart one is the guy called Nobita, he has a heavy Japanese accent I've seen in most people I've met. It has a lot of katakana phonetics.

@@SiriProject Just goes to show that you shouldn't teach or even assert that Katakana english is correct english. Because its not even vaguely correct most of the time. I genuinely think the correct way is teaching the functions of the roman alphabet, just to demonstrate how dynamic the system is. And how diverse a verbage you can have using it, and understand why english is how it is from that understanding. And I honestly think its far simpler to teach than memorising Kanji all from as early as elementary to high school and maybe even into higher education. Not because I say Roman letters is better. But simply demonstrating that compared that. Teaching roman letters is far simplier. One can take years. The other can take an afternoon.

@@Trashheapcuntspawn Yes, but in my opinion it's an oversimplification of what language really is. Just because an accent is traditionally considered to be "standard" doesn't mean other accents are incorrect. I would argue that minority of people speaks with RP accent based on my experience.

@@Trashheapcuntspawn RP isn't a standard really, it's just a specifically codified way of speaking which was favoured by broadcast media for a few decades up till the eighties somewhere. The standard accent favoured by those media now is called "Estuary English", but still that's no more a standard than RP ever was!

@@fakename2336 Think it depends more on where they've spent time overseas and what English media if any they consume. I would say Yuta's is Japanese speaking vaguely Standard British with bits of American. It's pretty hard to pin a non-native speaker down to specifics because it will be all sorts mixed in. Also 'British' and 'American' are incredibly broad on their own.

With the filipino accent the consonants tend to be very hard and the vowels are very similar to italian and spanish but there are regional (north & south) differences.

Right, since Philippines has been colonized by the Spaniards, Filipinos adapted plenty of words from Spain.

Scottish too, I nearly laughed when I heard it because it sounds exactly like a girl I know. "I did eh, yer paren's are gonna do eh, break tha cycle Mortey, rise above" There's something odd about living a Scot living in England. You lose the accent yourself but you can instantly understand someone speaking it.

I'm English (from the East), I was having trouble guessing which city she was from - any idea? My final guess was Glasgow, even though obviosly she doesn't have the classic Glaswegian accent I would say from some of her vowel sounds it resembled that more than any other scottish accent I can pinpoint (which isn't many)!

@@nootics This is fairly accurate. I did an accent test a few years ago which asked a lot of questions about how would you say certain words, and eventually it pinpointed to the area exactly where I was raised!

@@Utamiko Switzerland has something very similar, there's also a website here that does the same thing, point to your town based on the words you use. Though i forgot if it was for all of German speaking Switzerland or only the part i live in. It's crazy how many accents exist on this tiny strip of land, much like the UK it seems

You should check out Mashiro No Oto that just aired this last season. The main character and everyone from where he's from speak the Tsugaru dialect and it sounds much different from standard Japanese.

@@Tohlemiach Yeah I dont know why, but I feel like the japanese dialects sound friendlier than standard japanese. Maybe its because its what you speak to friends and family, and standard japanese is the business/polite language.

@@hauptmann25 Yeah I think it could definitely have a lot to do with that. You hear the dialects almost always without honorifics, so I think that's going to give them the impression that they're more intimate. I guess it would be good to compare casual standard Japanese to these other dialects. I'd still say they sound warmer and rounder, and I think it has a lot to do with their regular usage of "ya" instead of "da". It's just a softer sound.

This happened to me too. At first, I couldn't tell if someone else had a Spanish/Latino accent in English unless it was very thick and evident. But I also had trouble recognizing different English accents in general. It's been a few years now and I'm getting better at that. From talking to other people, it seems like learning to distinguish accents in your target language is an advanced skill.
