This reminds me of the old motorcycle shops I used to frequent in the 60's and 70's. They were untidy, grimy in fact, and the mechanics were grease to the elbows and frequently under the influence. But they could diagnose and fix damn near anything and they were passionate about their work. Today we have lots of flash, track lighting, chipper smiling sales people in running shoes, no hint of the smell of motor oil and exhaust and they can't fix shit. Huge improvement, simply huge.............

Louis, I think you've stumbled on to something here... consider the following... Given the reference "How many shots of Jager does Louis have to consume in order to be as dumb as a Genius bar Genius"... you could develop a Jager index for various repairs... for example:, An extremely difficult repair requiring specialized equipment, and not doable by most repair people, would have a relatively low Jager index... (how many shots does it take to make Louis unable to repair the part...) vs a fairly simple repair that the genius bar genius (GBG) would also say is not repairable, would have a relatively high Jager index... perhaps an entire bottle... Given enough trials, you may be able to estimate these values, and then rate your repairs in "Jager Index value". the higher the index, the more ridiculous the GBG assertion that it cannot be done.

Louis, Thank you for all your efforts. I'm a goldsmith and on occasion I drop a diamond or something on the floor that I just have to find. Here is a trick my dad tot me many years ago and I still use several times a month. Take a narrow beam flash light, turn off all the light, put the flashlight flat on the floor and fallow around the beam till you see the long shadow cast by your lost item. Give it a try next time your desperate, good luck, Billy

the problem is that the genius bar people are trained to tell you these things, whether they're true or not. they're not alone. The big box I used to work at constantly instructed me to lie to customers to convince them to pay too much for unnecessary repairs or service. They kept saying "convince the customer they're getting higher quality service, so it's worth more." It's not, the local independent stores did the same, if not better, service for half the price. Shops run by people like you (or to a much lesser extent me) who know what they're doing are very rare nowadays because low skill technicians are easier to deal with by the companies that employ them. They don't want thinkers, they want salesmen in tech clothing and the impatient ignorant public are more than happy to oblige them.

Dumb bitch have you noticed that Apple's are PC's ever since they switch from there PowerPC to x86-x64 Intel architecture in 2006? You know that PC's makers share the same processors as Apple? Louis, I'm currently fucked up off my ongoing depression and have been lurking around your videos for a while now. I'm in good health physically, but mentally completely disrupt; it was my dad's anniversary of his death yesterday (alcoholism over multiple years, an awful way to go for him and the family) and one of my closest childhood friends recently hanged himself (depression) which has really pushed me over the limit. Seeing you swig that first (and/or second/third) shot and spinning around in your chair like a little kid venturing off into his first capri sun sugar high had me laughing until tears came out. It's very rare for tears to escape my eyes these days with all the shielding my fucked up brain likes to output. You're one of the most genuine human beings on KZfaq currently and seeing you progress over the years has been nothing but awe-inspiring for me and fellow viewers I'm sure. You really take the bullshit out of this process and give us the cold-hard facts when it matters, despite all the rampant fanboyism present these days. Thanks for being you, much love from Arizona.

That's not limited to apple. Every shop I ever bought anything from has tried the "It can't be repaired" trick on me and on everybody I know. Most shops will try to sell you a new pc even if you're asking for a larger drive. They'll try to sell you a new (insert electric device here) instead of replacing a burnt fuse. That's the main reason I own a soldering station and a few screwdrivers .-D The "genius" bar is actually useful if you're an ideal apple user (the kind of guy who makes an apple account and keeps backups on iCloud). Broken mac goes in, new (usually refurbished) mac comes out, no questions asked. Log in, get your data back. The so-called apple experience isn't that bad - it actually made me MUCH more productive, not to mention, relaxed.

They're pretty easy to find for anyone looking in the right places. I found him by googling subject matter related to his videos. I've read a few Reddits based on some of his videos and he really doesn't get positive comments. People saying he rambles too much, is too repetitive, too preachy etc... Personally, I think he maybe does go on a bit for my liking and acts like a dick sometimes (but then again who doesn't?), but all of this is subjective, what matters to me is the message he's trying to get across or the actual practical board repair stuff. The large majority of KZfaq viewers aren't interested in repairing motherboards, listening to business model advice and corporate greed stories. Personally, I am, which is why I'm subbed to him but I accept I'm in a minority there. There are things he can do to make his videos more appealing to the mainstream and gain views and subs as a result, but, to me, his current format is fine. If he changed to the "fluffy kitten" model of videos, I feel it would alienate his core followers. But, yeah, that's just my feelings. He can present his stuff any way he likes for all I care, just so long as he actually presents it.
