Fantastic work Jazza. Using rust solution to give it a more metallic finish was pretty genius. An alternative method that you could try would be to cover the mold in metallic powder using a brush to get into the crevices before pouring your resin into the mold. That way a layer of metalic powder should be on the surface of the finished product.

We'll have to use some chemical vapor deposition (cvd) or high pressure high temperature (hpht) methods with cubic zirconian and chemicals to make some diamonds, or melt or flame fuse some aluminum oxide to make some sapphires, after I bang out some ductile steel scales as a longer lasting outer layer than the lighter ceramics I think??? Often whenever someone makes a real metal cast you can find many different imperfections like tiny air bubbles, larger voids where the metal didn't flow properly, and the granular texture of the sand mold. I think that if you were to artificially introduce these imperfections, while it would make them look less pristine, it would also make them look more like the real thing.

@@babbagebrassworks4278 are those nanoparticules or powder? I should have been more specific. Because powder did not work, when we testet in the company were I work. They ended with a specled apereance, not homogenous like the nanoparticles. There are flakes also, like a glitter of sorts. Both were way cheaper than the nanomaterial, but it was some years ago, maybe the prices dropped. Also, we tested on expanding poliurethane, that resin may have different results. It is wort a try.

Eddie (also known as Eddie the Head) is the mascot for the English heavy metal band Iron Maiden. He is a perennial fixture of the group's artwork, appearing in all of their album covers (as well as most of their singles) and in their merchandise... . The first version of Eddie was a mask made by an art student who was friends with Dave "Lights" Beazley,[6][7] then in charge of lighting, pyrotechnics and other effects for Iron Maiden's live show.[8] According to Beazley, the original mask was a papier-mâché mould of his own face, which was then used in the band's backdrop, consisting of lights and the band's logo.[7] At the end of their live set, during the "Iron Maiden" song, a fish tank pump was used to squirt fake blood out of the mask's mouth, which typically covered their then-drummer Doug Sampson.[9] After this initial incarnation, Beazley constructed a larger mask out of fibreglass, equipped with flashing eyes and the ability to release red smoke from its mouth.[7] The band's bassist and founding member Steve Harris states that the name "Eddie" comes from the original mask being referred to as "The Head", which sounded like "Ead" in the band members' London accent.[10] According to guitarist Dave Murray the name was also inspired by an old joke. -Wikipedia entry on Eddie (Iron Maiden)

Just like you fill up the silicone mould with scrap silicone pieces, you could fill up your resin-iron powder mould with scrap iron (or metal) like spare random screws and/or bolts I imagine. Fills up the volume with cheaper material with the "added bonus" that it is actually 100% metal.

You can buy steel shot pellets in 10 lbs bags very cheaply to back fill hollow casts. The most cost effective way for me was to dust my molds with metal powder, then rotocast a thin shell with the resin and powder mix, then fill the cavity with a mix of steel shot and plain resin. The metal powder is VERY expensive by volume and a 50/50 mix with resin will cost you a fortune to do solid casts.

But, i first polished the cast and i used 000 Steel wool, not that rough kitchen steel wool stuff. You have to remember, its 50% resign (even if it feels like metal), so the rough wool does not really polish, is just tears out chunks of your cast. just use fine steel wool, polish the high points and then use your solution to let it rust.
