New research shows scent sensitivity can be potentially serious with costs that can add up. Fragrance sensitivity-or multiple chemical sensitivities-can even be considered a disability on a case-by-case basis.

It's a definite problem. There have been times that I get an INSTANT powerful day-long migraine when someone with strong cologne or perfume enters a small classroom or sits nearby in a large room. Some C's & P's don't trigger this effect in me, so I think the chemical composition matters. Musky scents seem more dangerous to me than others, for example, but I don't think it's just that simple. I had a coworker with a similar problem, & we had another coworker who would NOT take us seriously. She took the opportunity to passive-aggressively torture us with more & more powerfully scented lotions & potions. She was a nasty piece of work.

@@jennyjohnson5428 same thing happened to me my co-worker almost killed me with her excess perfume and lotions. It turns out that I have a very rare condition that could have been prevented. If I hadn't let the doctors and certain people in my life convince me into thinking I was causing the symptoms or they were all in my head. That is until one side of face dropped and I couldn't move the right side of my body. It's called hemicraina continua. Please take your concerns seriously.

My wife, who had been a kindergarten teacher in West Virginia for 28 years, was forced out of her job because she developed Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, which caused her to get often-debilitating migraines from the perfumes and other scents used by co-workers, and her employer did absolutely nothing to stop it from happening. She asked, even begged, her employer for help for almost a decade , and even though she ultimately took them to court and was awarded a court order in 2016, which empowered her employer to take measures to stop it, they refused to do so. The lack of administration support caused her co-workers to shrug-off her condition, and to wear whatever they wanted to, and, as a result, her health deteriorated to the point that she was forced to retire at age 60. The state Human Rights commission was aware of the issue, but it made no difference. Her employer even admitted in court that they recognized her condition as a "disability". So, a once well-respected, twice-elected teacher of the year at her school, had become the target of workplace bullying and harassment by co-workers, at a facility that publicly prides itself as having zero-tolerance policies against bullying and harassment.

I developed MCS after undergoing pepper foam training as a security officer at my local hospital. As I became more sensitive, I had to endure co-workers using products that I'd specifically told them made me sick just to see if I could tell. Constantly trying to "catch me" at faking it. I'd go on my rounds and while gone the nurses would wipe down the area with the cleaning wipes and when I'd get back I'd vomit within 20 minutes. And then they'd complain that I didn't stay in the emergency room lobby when they wanted to me to so they could go and goof off elsewhere. I've been out of a job now since 2015 because of MCS. I can't leave my home without wearing a heavy duty mask.

Wow ..that's really horrible and sad... my brother went through this years ago when he was a geophysicist working in the environmental field... and his own place of work actually had a sick building syndrome problem and treated him like shit about it especially after he contacted OSHA.. they had new rugs that were GLUED to the CEMENT floors and the glue was making him TERRIBLY ILL. Now years later his chemical sensitivities have EXPONENTIALLY gotten WORSE as he is vitamin B6 toxicity and is VERY ILL... regretfully he has to deal with several DOCTORS who are TOTAL A-HOLES who do not want to admit this is real and they're trying to pass it off as a PSYCHIATRIC problem ... this is so frustrating because the truth is chemical sensitivities or rather the chemicals at one point DAMAGE THE LIMBIC PART OF THE BRAIN which is where the AMYGDALA is , so then one needs to find YOGA EXERCISES and DO MEDITATION to help HEAL SLOWLY and STRENGTHEN that part of the brain and then they will often see some advances in their own tolerance .

People don’t understand. I have walked by public places or went the bathroom somewhere & it stinks of bleach & Pinesol or Fabulouso & I start having my heat hurt, my body breaks out in rashes, welts, I have trouble breathing, sneezing, etc. I literally almost passed out just walking at a mall with a friend as I smelled Fabulouso walking by a place that used it. I was really sick for a few hours & what’s sad is people don’t believe you or they think you’re being over dramatic. If a place uses chemicals or even glade plug in’s,air wick, etc I have to immediately leave. What upsets me is I can be in another room that didn’t have the chemicals in it with the door shut & someone can use bleach in the adjacent room & I will have a severe reaction. I don’t allow housekeeper’s that come into my home to use chemicals. One lady came into my home & used Fabuloso & I got sick. I politely told her use the all natural stuff I have in my home made with essential oils. I use Thieve’s, Seventh Generation, Mrs. Meyer’s, Simple Green, Ecover, etc. The stuff cleans well & there’s not chemicals you shouldn’t be using.Honestly, people should be more proactive in their health, not using this stuff around themselves, their families or their pet’s. Think about it children & pets walk around putting their paws & hands on the floor then put these in their mouths & such. It toxins we shouldn’t use anyway.

In extreme cases of exposure to incredibly overpowering scent, health issues could result. However, it's usually a power trip by those who think they should be able to dictate such highly personal issues as the type of deodorant others use. Or soap. Or what sort of body lotion. All of these products often have scent. You can also detect the smell of mouthwash or toothpaste. Yes. People are petty enough to claim that they are so affected by someone else's mouthwash or breathmint that it affects their health

You can use your cologne at your home where you won't offend other people. Perfume destroys relationship, you gain invisible and visible enemies to your life. I have seen women or guys running away from relationship because of cologne, perfume, laundry with strong smell, etc. Lately the companies are making some laundry with perfume booster. It's horrendous. Whenever the person moves the body, the freaking smell renews in the air, it's a human spray, airfreshener. IAlso horrible going home smelling your boss, smelling your co-worker. the perfume contaminates the paperwork, the door nob and start contaminate the clothes and go home smelling other people. Horrible. I went to my neighbor home and started playing and holding the puppy dog. The freaking neighbor put perfume on the dog. Poor dog. I went home all contaminated with the perfume on my chest, neck. I had to take off all the clothes and take shower. Now when I go the neighbor, I avoid to play with the dog that beggs to play with him. One day I had to leave the store cashier line because one customer has a smell that was making me crasy, very sick. The smell came from another planet. I was avoiding her while I was in the store, and she kept coming to my direction to browse the things I was looking at, I kept leaving the area and going far away from her, but at the check out I could not avoid her, so I had to leave the items I want to buy and left the store. You just want to run. Freaking poison to your brain.

Ok your scent sensitivity is high. How is this my problem? I’m allergic to something in certain deodorants, but I don’t go around making people feel bad about using those products. The only real solution your going to get is to protect yourself. So go buy a gas mask or stay home. Your problem is not my problem.

If you are hurting someone by wearing cologne, it is your responsibility. Hey, here's an idea if you are worried you stink, instead if dousing yourself in cologne, how about using soap and water and taking a shower. Solved it for you, you're welcome.
