Research done in 2004, 2005 and 2009 by Stanley M.Caress and Anne C. Steinemann "... found that nearly 38% of Americans report adverse effects when exposed to some kind of fragranced product." With approximately 310 million people in America in 2010, that is almost 117 million Americans who report adverse effects to normal, everyday products.
As we can imagine, people living with Environmental Illness (Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, Chemical Injury, Toxic Encephalopathy) often experience limited access into public places, issues at work and inability to attend functions with friends and family. Regrettably, these barriers can lead to loneliness, isolation and feeling abandoned when loved ones choose not forgo the fragrances that cause these problems.
Therefore, if our loved one is telling us they are getting debilitating migraines, dizziness or fatigue from our laundry detergent, maybe we should consider simply switching it out so that they may remain a part of our lives.
For more information on the Choose Friendships Over Fragrances project, visit the Cleaner Indoor Air Campaign (CIAC) and look under "Campaigns."

Having MCS is very difficult ,specially when your family and friends does not fully understand or lacking empathy on what we go through everyday ,you have to be a very strong person and also need some family and friends support to survive ,for all the people who doesn"t have MCS take proper precaution for you and your family because if you developed MCS there is no cure the only cure is avoidance and isolation a miserable and deadly existence ,so be safe everybody .

OMG! I am literally crying watching as I feel this way, feel so alone and alien. I have a severe allergy to fragrance myself and I have a job where they do not respect or validate my experience. I am struggling terribly breathing and most people do not recognize or understand how many chemicals are in everything. This speaks to why our environment is so polluted too.. We are playing money to poison ourselves. I just developed this sensitivity this year. Thank you so much for sharing this. I am grateful you have a friend like this. I struggle to think about even going out as going on the transit alone is anxiety inducing. I love your friendship so much.

Hi Jaclyn! We are so sorry to hear this! Sadly, you are not alone. Unfortunately, millions have reactions to the chemicals in synthetically fragranced products. More and more employers are becoming more aware. IDA has a couple of great pamphlets about being fragrance free: invisibledisabilities.org/publications/ IDA also had a campaign about chemicals in fragrances. All the information is still available: CleanerIndoorAir.org You may want to consider calling the ADA Hotline and/or accessing the Job Accommodation Network website for advice on how to handle your situation.

Thank you! Wish more people would choose friendships over fragrances. But there is another factor. Methylisothiazolinone (7th Gen, ECOS), benzisothiazolinone, are both ODORLESS toxins that affect MCS patients, too, I'd appreciate an update, choose friendships over toxicants, because we will still be impacted by odorless products, too!

Thank you so much for posting this video and what a good friend you are! At this time I have been pretty much at home for the last 7 months. After becoming sick with bells Pasley and shingles I think brought on from the exterminator. I became acute with chemical sensitivities. I had a Dr.'s apt this morning after the two hour wait and breathing in the floor cleaners the other peoples perfume my lips were numb, my vision was blurry, I had a headache and I just wanted to sleep. But alas I they called me and the Dr. had on perfume now I sit in a small enclosed room with her perfume but I really needed to go over my lab results. She stated that she remembered that I had a sensitivity so she would not sit to close. Then preceded to tell me that she needed to wear it she could not leave home without it. Imagine . If you can not have the expectation of not getting sick from your own doctor when even medical professionals do not understand what hope will I have to live any kind of normal life again!

I have been wondering what caused my MCS other than mold exposure in my home. I developed bells palsy a few years ago from extreme stress and mold exposure. Unfortunately now I am living with permanant synkinesis due to Bell's palsy.

Yes! However, I have only been to their house once in the 10 years we have known each other, because she lives so far away. Believe me, it has been a battle with friends and family. I am down to just a few friends I may see once a year or less. Neuro-toxic chemicals cause millions to be very isolated!

The smell of fragrances in laundry products are made to last for months in Japan (fragrances microencapsulated in multiple layers) and even a friend decided to chuck everything in the house out, I couldn't enter. Even if you're scent free, once you go out you're full of fragrances from head to toe cos there's no place that doesn't contain those capsules in the air, so you can't have people over unless they're fragrance free AND have a fragrance-free car to travel without getting off on the way.

For myself, fragrances derived from a natural source are no different than synthetics. They both have the same result. So that means for me essential oils are no different than a chemical plug in air freshener.

Even a fragrance that starts out in a natural form is no longer in its natural form after it is processed. Some processes, solvents and additives are worse than others, too.

Oh I wish people realised this. I can't visit people and people can't visit me. Everyone says they want to see me more but they won't give up fragrances 😞 other people just disappear.

It’s so difficult and frustrating at work, and I can’t escape and can’t work from home too often. It’s exhausting and heart breaking, but I need to work. I don’t expect others to understand, and they don’t. It’s embarrassing to talk about it, people look at me like I’m crazy or neurotic. Thankfully, our apartment is a scent free environment, otherwise I’d have nowhere to go. I avoid family and friends and stay away from people as much as I can.

We are so very sorry you are struggling with this! It does seem that people have a difficult time understanding. Though, really, all they need to do is to believe those who say they cannot be around these chemicals. Though it is not an allergy, people don't seem to question when people say they cannot be around peanuts. Nonetheless, it is not as rare as people assume; millions are affected. In fact, we highly suspect even more people are living with symptoms, but aren't making the connection.

I can relate to this, and I feel like fragrances are only getting stronger and more popular. Work is very hard sometimes. I get really fearful of laundry detergent too, especially if you're a child and don't know how to tell your parents that what they're using to clean your clothes is toxic to them :-(

Where can I get a list of things to do in order to prepare a home suitable for someone with chemical sensitivities? I am particularly interested in how to get rid of scents in clothing. Some of my children's clothing are handed down and it takes a long time to get the smell out

@TUCKERZONE We are so sorry to hear of your reactions. Millions of people report various mild to serious reactions to fragrances, including IDA President's wife and mother-in-law. It is not uncommon, though people often think it is. Sadly, this can cause isolation for those who live with these adverse health effects.

I just found your video thanks to a related link from a friend. I have MCS--and it is a particular trial thanks to COVID. I can't wear a mask and I haven't seen my medical provider since last February. I need to--but how to get past that with them has become a big question. Phone consults are all well and good, but I need blood tests run for health issues we've been watching for a while now. Suggestions on how to get those blood draws without mask-wearing (which isn't going to happen) would be very helpful. The other thing I wanted to mention was that MCS and church (at least here) don't mix well at all. I really miss church, but I can't walk into any building anywhere without having someone normal vet it for me first. Sometimes they think I'll be safe, and then I walk in and it's still a hard no. Churches are especially problematic, not just because of the fragrances and detergent residues on people, but also because of carpet fresheners, bathroom air fresheners, furniture polish, and a hundred other things. If there's one place that I wish people cared enough to find a way to make this better, it's at churches across America. Maybe not every church needs to care this much--but when there are few to none in a local community, it's really hard.

MCS is a horrible thing to live with! Our founder's wife has really suffered with it and the isolation it brings! This is not an allergy nor is it a rare disorder as many people want to say. Toxic chemicals can affect anyone at any time. In 2006, we launched the Cleaner Indoor Air Campaign to bring awareness and education to the world! www.CleanerIndoorAir.org

Oh, this is the association I joined, ok, not the association but the support group. Some kind words n info. fr host no other echoes or friends that struck any conversation. I guess i m d untouchable, hahaha. it's quite quite quite alright, i do understand everyone is struggling to survive, have so much on each's plate. My motto is, a better world because of my existance. I wish everyone well, i cheer for everyone's bettering and whatever endeavor for wellbeing. i've always be a sickie, i can't handle much physical, not a full time job. Life def. not easy. u think u go for Ski mountain for fresh air for a treat, ok, u got sick to the core, w close to no ventilatoin indoor, heating up ur side of hotel going through renovation new carpet, paint, furniture etc, spa tower soaked in bleach, u flight to see total eclipse, wow! but d BBQ smoke, no where to hide but in car AC on no sleep, Northern light, whole Europe's sky is burning, i mean, the heating fume. 3week rarely sleep, miss plane, car accident, lost phone all contact, ordeal. But i m a glass have full person. if i manage to get by actually ok, neighbor fr hell w their drinking buddy cop friends make it hell, 24/7 make different kinds fume, lined up cars, trash cans broken tired open different windows etc to channel toxin to ur house when you reactor, police showed up, illegally handcuff u to psychiatric ward, to solitary jail pump in more fume spray bleach all over they knew i can't handle. I must be crazy right? cause nobody else behave like me. I almost died twice in solitary jail. eventually they stop the fume, let me go w my lawyer, cause i screamed to tell my story n begged them to put a bullet to my head to end my misery, every cell of my body is tore apart w what i breath in they pump via jail cell celling vent. It's just a few days, i lost trunks hair, 10% of my weight, i overloaded w fume in my body vomit through out, drive around hop in different vacation rental to sleep, water clean everything, water wash all beddings secretly cause i was not sure if host like it. I dared not to to that home where my neighbor illegally block all my air flow w 12ft hight black landscape plastic 280ft, his tenant side, blow in fume.. i am a walking dead, they made 4cases out of nothing in court, haha, u think court is, is what u saw in the movie?haha, WRONG. I am shocked to find and unfortunately experienced what they could twisted. MG. there's just no such thing as law if people think they can get away w. If they put me in jail or psy ward illegally where i can't control any of the element no place to run, I WILL DIE, i have no doubt. Trial in a few months. If they want me to die, I just have to DIE, what u gonna do, u r not equip, innocent law abiding lamb,have no voice by urself. If i have connection w some ganster, relatives of big shots or w 20-30mobs voices anger for me, none'd injustice'd happen to me. I just don't want to DIE FOR NOTHING

Love, love, love this! Such a great cause. Especially in regards to this allergy. My question is are there any more natural or lighter perfumes that you might recommend. I still love the idea of perfume, and one that's more natural would be great to have.
@InvisibleDisability
@InvisibleDisability 8 жыл бұрын
+Micah Brazzale We do not know of any perfumes that are chemical and/or VOC free. It is the chemicals that people have issues with. Some can (but not all) use essential oils IF they are water distilled, no petroleum, food grade, etc. But remember that most chemicals are produced from natural sources. Thus, even if it claims to be natural or from a natural source, it is no longer in it's natural form after it has been processed.

Essential oils. There are many very nice ones, a wide variety. Some natural health stores have samplers of them, also some are sold by individual distributors who would have samplers. Wide price range also, depending on the company and the actual oil. Just be sure it is a pure one.
