Hey friends! SPJ here and welcome to a fun new episode of "Stompbox Saturday". This week, we take some time to check out one of Sonicake Pedal's latest offerings: the Octaver. This pedal is essentially a clone of the one of my favorite vintage Boss pedals: the OC-2 Octaver. Can the Sonicake Octaver pedal live up to the old Boss pedal? Possibly, so in this video we're going to compare the two side-by-side.
First we'll demo the Sonicake Octaver and then shootout the Sonicake and BOSS.

Vintage. Watch your mount. I first played the Boss OC2 in 1996 and loved it. Just recently bought the Sonicake octave. I didn't realise it was the same circuit but after nearly 30 years... Great video. I think vintage definition is over 50 years old. I'm 58. ❤

I just bought my fourth (!!!) OC-2, because I do use it all the time (not literally, but still a lot - like on almost 33% of all my solos) and for reasons of stupidity on my part, thinking I need a completely different system, I sell everything and buy new gear. And every time I did that I wanted to keep my OC-2, because I love its sound. And every time I thought I could get that sound from anything else. Well….., you can’t! Just a couple of weeks ago I decided to buy either an OC-3 or an OC-5, because both pedals have an OC-2 setting. I payed 100 euros for an OC-3 and though it has an interesting option (especially for acoustic guitars), the OC-2 setting was disappointing to say the least. I found out that the OC-2 setting on the OC-3 (and 5 I believe) are digital versions of my beloved analog circuit. And it’s just not the same! I don’t mind the poor tracking. That’s part of the charm. So, I kept looking for an original OC-2, but some people ask crazy amounts of money for these old ones. Then, when I least expected it, I found one for (again) 100 euros. I immediately bought it. I’m a happy man again. Want to know why I use this pedal so much? It’s the combination of (at least) two pedals. I always use it before a simple Electro-Harmonix BassBalls. And the BassBalls needs to be set in distortion mode. This used to be my ‘secret signature sound’. Now that was a long time ago. By now I’m way too old to stay that serious about it. But do yourself a favour and try it. It’s magic! When I was in that store where I bought my latest OC-2 I told the owner to add a 2nd hand BassBalls to it, just to be sure it was still magic to me. He plugged everything in, switched on the OC-2 and he had a faint smile on his face. Of course he knew what to expect. Then he added the BassBalls and he looked at me with a big grin, as if he wanted to say “hey man, you’re right, this does sound great!” And then I told him to switch on the distortion mode. He looked shocked, but very, very happy and I heard him saying “AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!” 😅 I mean, it’s an unusual combination. Both pedals are being used by bass players. Especially the BassBalls. But the two of them together for guitar, that’s just magic. Sometimes I add an overdrive in front of it. Sometimes I add a bit of delay. And sometimes I add the EHX Frequency Analyzer after these two pedals. I tune the frequency analyzer to a major scale, two extra voices…. Tonal Bliss! 😬😬😬 I can’t wait to use that old big tile again. Can you tell I’m excited? The Sonicake was the closest thing to the OC-2 that I’ve heard so far. And despite my large pedalboard I do need some space to cram on this combination of pedals again. This wasn’t going to work with my old Russian BassBalls (way too big), so I decided to purchase the BassBalls Nano. These are cheap! I do hope they sound as good as that old big stuff. Haven’t been able to try it yet, but something tells me it’ll be alright. And if the combination of the Sonicake and the BB Nano sounds just as magical as the big old BB and the Boss, then that would be absolutely perfect! I would like to apologise for this long comment. I can’t help myself. Sorry. It’s my enthusiasm. Anyway, thanks for the video! 🧡🧡🧡

Will this pedal work for The White Stripes song Blue Orchid and CKY's 98 Quite Bitter Beings?
@SeanPierceJohnson
@SeanPierceJohnson 10 ай бұрын
For cKy it would be perfect! But Blue Orchid has a high octave so something more like the EHX POG would be more appropriate.

10:20... I guess the sonicake is analogue aswell? They sound similar, and the oc2 is far from "perfect" when it comes to that. Not sure if it's the "bad" tracking or w/e you're hearing. Imo part of what makes the analogue ones sound "better" a fatter sound with some tracking problems... FOR THAT APPLICATION! Im like you, riffs with distortion.. However for the price and the amount of Deron Miller riffs i can pull off, it's between this and the behringer for sure. Great demo guy!

Lets be honest, octave up always sounds too digital, too artificial. Too much like Jack White or Tom Morello. Not that sounding like them is bad, but its hard to sound original with that effect. People will immediately say "hey Jack White!"

I like my sub n up...@@kevinr.3542 So can i blend a nice octave down with a bit of octave up, it's perfect as long as you don't crank the up to much... And it depend's how much of the dry signal you dailed in...
