Can The 2021 Toyota Tundra TRD PRO Compete With The Raptor, TRX, Or Rebel? [Full Review]

This Toyota Tundra TRD PRO is just under 49,000$ which makes it within 100$ of the most expensive and luxurious tundra you can buy
And the door handles are made by little tikes
Both hood scoops are fake
The steering wheel is the same as you get in a base Tacoma from like 12 years ago
The gear stick is from the 90s and the head unit is a dumpster fire
By no means is this a luxurious or modern truck and with the TRD Pro kit it starts competing with things like the Ford Raptor or the Ram TRX in terms of offroad prowess.
Here’s the good news/bad news. Bad news first, in every measurable way the Raptor and TRX are superior trucks execpt for two - reliability and price.
At 50k MSRP you can’t buy a used Raptor with less than 60k miles selling for less than that.
Here’s another thing to consider, these TRD PRO vehicles hold their value better than damn near every other truck and why is that? PEOPLE FIEN FOR THEM! WHY? It’s a horribly equipped, basic, inefficient, ancient pickup?!
Here’s the reason - owners will actually offroad these things. Think of the Raptor and the TRX as the Lamborghinis of off road trucks. Wildly capable, but they spend more time on Instagram than what they’re built for. TRD owners beat the crap out of them and go overlanding, why? Cuz the trucks can take it.
The Toyota Land Cruiser is the go-to offroad vehicle worldwide because it’s capable, tough and bulletproof.
The TRD trucks aren’t the fastest or the best to live with, but you can take it out, beat the absolute mess out of it and it’ll still ask for more.
So with that, let’s talk about the specifics of the Tundra TRD PRO
I’ll add one caveat before we dive in here. At the filming of this video, the next gen Tundra was leaked and the new one looks like it’ll fix a lot of the things I’ve complained about in the opening.
Here it is, the Toyota Tundra is a massive beast of a truck
It’s got a 5.7L V8
381 hp
401 lbft
This is what you want, not the 6 in the Taco (SOUND)
Toyota/Lexus V8s are bulletproof
6 speed auto
4WD with electronic transfer case and automatic LSD
It’s not fast, it’s huge and it’s beasty - you don’t expect a SUMO wrestler to win a footrace, but that doesn’t mean he’s not in shape
Here’s the thing though, none of that stuff I just mentioned is the important bit
This is an offroader so it’s nice to have that 4wd system with the transfer case BUT
Fox dampers with external reservoirs - for added travel and body control
skidplate
Rigid fog lights
TRD specific wheel and tire package - BBS Forged
Now even with all that stuff it’s still missing some stuff from the competition, but that’s a separate video
Let’s talk looks, I’ll let you make your own decisions for the most part, BUT
Lunar rock
Special grille
TRD stamping
Looks as badass as it is, but I’d have the Army green and if I had a taco id do voodoo blue
Interior is basic as hell like we talked about
Super spacious
Back seats fold up too
Front seats are ehh comfy, but have cool stitching
In 2020 they added ACP and AA
Now let’s get it on the road and see how it does
Here’s something ridiculous - LAUNCH!
It’s not horribly slow and more importantly it sounds great.
Silky smooth V8 power
Redline under 6000
6 speed gearbox
THIS IS OLD SCHOOL AF - came out in 07…..
The Fox dampers make this actually really comfy on the road too
The ride is supple and the power rolls on smooth
The steering is sluggish, makes this big truck FEEL like a big truck
Overall it’s not bad, it’s overly simple, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing
Final thoughts*
Alright so at this point we’ve been all over this thing.
Here’s my consensus.
The biggest fault is the age. The new gen for 2021 or 2022 will solve a lot of the equipment and design issues
It’ll also solve the fuel economy issue which is abysmal at like 17 mpg highway. (hybrid)
Despite all those flaws there’s a lot to like here, especially if you’re an overlander take your vehicle camping.
The offroad kit is good enough where you can get most place safely, the interior is big enough so you can get there comfortably and the reliability is enough so you can always get home...unless you run out of gas

14 mpg with an empty bed and no trailer is a deal breaker for me. My last ford lasted me 15 years and never had a major repair. It got 20 mpg too. If it was 4wd I never would have traded it. I'll bet my new one last just as long if not longer.

2007 Tech? 🤣 I am sorry but that is just extremely incorrect. It is much more updated than you think. Has Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, tons of Safety features, Push-Button and Remote Start, Adaptive Cruise Control, Tire Pressure Monitoring, Navigation, HD Radio, LED Headlights, bed lights, and Fog Lights, Alexa voice communication, etc. I mean what else do you actually need? It’s a truck, not a Luxury sedan. 🤷🏻‍♂️ The gas mileage isn’t that bad either, not much worse than any other truck with a V8. Driving habits of the individual are what determines such. I have a 2020 Tundra SR5, and am trading it in for a 2021 TRD Pro. I test drove many other trucks; Ram, F-150, GMC AT4, Titan, and Chevrolet Trail Boss Z71 (5.3L & 6.2L), and I still choose the “outdated” Tundra. Once you own one, it’s extremely hard to get something else, unless it’s an upgraded Tundra (like the TRD Pro). Not to mention that even with the “outdated” Tech, it still holds it’s value better than anything else of its kind. That alone tells me all I need to know. Toyota Tundra TRD Pro isn’t just another truck, it’s an investment. You will get your money back and then some if you choose to sell it. That cannot be said of most other trucks.

So what you are saying is the tundra is the last basic truck on the road. A basic truck to do real truck stuff is a good thing. There is something to be had for that kind of rock solid reliable simplicity. With that said, the tundra's Fuel economy is a deal breaker. I get 22 MPG in my 2.7L ecoboost on the highway without a trailer in tow. My ecoboost can make the same 400 pound feet to torque at a lower RPM. Trucks and turbos go together like peanut butter and jelly. If the tundra had better fuel economy without sacrificing work capacity, I would have bought one without question. Even though I bought a ford, I think the tundra has reliability in spades. Like I said, there is a lot to be said for rock solid simplicity. That part of Toyota's formula should never change, BUT PLEASE FIX THE FUEL ECONOMY!

@@rdsii64 That’s certainly a contributing factor but there’s still the factor of putting lots of turbo power/pressures into smaller engine and manufacturers not adding upgraded internals to handle that. And not one came close to its straight line performance on road. The only negative about the Raptor is the v6 3.5 twin turbo. I’m a big v8 guy. But it still is more capable off roading and on road than the Tundra. I own a 2012 mustang 5.0 and 2019 mustang 5.0 pp1 and they’ve been great. If I put reliability over fun, I would have a Corolla. But there is no fun in that. And the Tundra would not suffice for me. But it’s an amazing looking truck and it sounds great. But don’t fool yourself. It does not compete with the Raptor. And where do you get the Raptor being 20k more? I custom ordered my Raptor and it was 67k and some change out the door. $55,840 Base MSRP for 2019 Ford Raptor Super Crew (4 door) (800A package) $3,855 Total of Options -17-inch Forged Aluminum Bead-Lock Capable Wheels .. -4.10 front axle with TORSEN® Differential .. -bed divider .. -bed-liner spray in .. -remote start system .. -Tailgate Step with Tailgate Lift Assist .. $1,595 Destination Charges Price without taxes and license: $61,190 Price after Cali taxes and license: $67k and some change.

Raptor and TRX outdo it because the TRD is not meant to compete with a raptor or trx, it’s meant to compete with a trail boss, f150 fx4, and the rebel. This is like comparing a Honda Civic to an f1 car.

I have a raptor and after two years of dealing with cam phasers and other nonsense, it's time for a toyota. I just wish it looked better because I am certainly not buying the new one as it has a v6tt and... never again. It's actually uglier than this generation, tbh, anyway.

I think the tundra gets better gas mileage than a raptor. Eco boost, power of a V8, gas mileage of a V8, and the sound of a Mini Cooper. Pointless. If you want good gas mileage buy a moped.

@@brandophoto-f3t not true. I had a Raptor, 17 to 18 mpg on 35s, my TRD Pro 2nd tank was 15.8. First tank 14s on stock tires. But Raptor takes premium fuel, so the cost per mile is almost a wash. The Raptor is a better ride, hands down, the tech is better also. It was the reliability that made me trade out of the Raptor for the Tundra. Reliability, that means a lot to me.

@@davemasbutter266 I understand but what I don’t get is why there’s always people making comments on how great the Raptor is etc.?? @@cerny4444 2nd Gen Raptor is an amazing truck. Probably the best pickup I’ve ever owned. The Tundra is good for what it is but it is extremely dated & nowhere near as capable on road or off unless you spend a lot of time & money modifying it. At that point you may void any factory warranties. Raptor gives you a lot of performance & comfort right off of the showroom floor. If you get a chance to buy a lightly used pavement queen at a good price I’d recommend picking it up.
