I have to say, a Helicoil repair is one of the most satisfying repairs there are. You take something that would normally be a huge issue and fix it better than new. I bought both the metric and SAE kits from Amazon. They aren’t Helicoil brand, but are cheap and work well.

Nice job! I usually add high strength loctite on the helicoil and grease or anti seize on the screw, to prevent the risk of it coming out if someone screws the screw out.

You should use Tap Magic or Quick Tap when tapping aluminum. The metal is soft, and the chip sometimes binds and tears the thread. Plus, tap deeper than you need because you have to compensate for the taper of the tip. If the hole is not deep enough you can Tap it with the taper Tap and then go in again with a flat bottom Tap. Great video.

Put red lock tite on insert threads. Then let sit for a few hours for the lock tite to harden. Then if any of the lock tite is in the threads of the insert, use a thread chaser, not a tap, to clean out the insert threads. Retired marine tech here, outboard motors are aluminum and we have stripped threads once in a while. But if we don’t put red lock tite on, the insert has come out a couple times.

The nice part about thread inserts is that now the original sized bolt will actually have a larger purchase on the aluminum than the OEM bolt had originally! The stainless threads being more durable is an added bonus. Well done.

When I rebuilt a Stihl hedge trimmer engine I just drilled them out to 6 millimetres because it came back with a sheared off muffler screw which was of the self tapping type,it was one of those long ones. I just drilled at least one of them out & fitted at least one M304 M6 threaded hex head bolt, note that I drilled the new cylinder kit bolt holes out & tapped them to 6 millimetres because the original 5 mm self tapping screws didn't fit,AFAIK that hedge trimmer is still going !
@Drottninggatan2017
@Drottninggatan2017 2 ай бұрын
Sometimes it can be tricky to use 6 mm bolts as you also have to enlarge the holes in the muffler, and those usually have pipes inside to support the screw.

Thank you for a video that applies to all small engine stripped threads! Suggestion for the thread drilling step: Use a drill stop to control the drilling depth. It also gives a visual reference to help keep the actual drilling square.

I had to do that to my 8-26 snow blower from Canadian Tire which I purchased in 1985. Same bolt threads were used on the insert but I bought new bolts due to the age and wear from heat on the originals.

Certain models of Stihl muffler bolts always vibrate loose. I put slightly larger bolts instead and added the upgrade bracket to stop it from happening again, yours has the old bracket, the new one braces it in another spot.

You forgot to tell the punters, to back the tap out 1/2 turn per turn, to "break the thread"...LOL, Oh it binds, no lube & you did not break the threads, that is why it bound up, plus no lube...plus the helicoil was too long, cut it down in length, plus the tail should be below the surface by about 1/2 a turn, so it does not pull out...
