Tobi has been having lessons with Mat for a few months and is very keen to take his Driving Test. He has good car control - but does he have all the other skills needed to be a safe driver driver, such as the judgement and knowledge that comes with experience. In this video we will see how Tobi does in a full mock driving test, and find out if he is ready or not.

I passed my automatic test in May and still watch driving test videos I still find them interesting to watch to see how other learners drive or even how other full licence holders drive haha 😄

Well done to Tobi, not easy being in a tense test situation but takes real courage to have it filmed for thousands of others to watch. hope he has passed now :) I passed 2nd time with 1 minor :)

Today I passed my driving test just by watching all your videos especially the mock, really helpful. I never had any driving instructor, I wouldn’t recommend though but I think it is doable with determination. I only practice on my own watching your videos and correcting myself. I was quite nervous thinking I was going to fail after making some mistakes at the beginning of the test but I remained focused till the end and luckily it was considered trivial. Good luck to all those preparing for their test.

6:34 that was the instructor's and satnavs fault. He was on the right lane, mistakenly listened to the satnav, forgetting to ignore and ended up between both lanes

The instructor alerted beforehand to ignore the satnav. This seems to be difficulty maintaining lane probably due to failure to observe sign board/road markings, unintentional bend towards left to prepare for exit, or just failure to realize road width.

Hello! I've been really valuing your videos! I have my test in Bury on Friday but have only done Cambridge routes with my instructor so these are useful! I know bury better anyway! I even spot a little cameo from my nan doing her shopping sometimes in the background of your videos! I've never seen it in the videos but do you know if the Howard estate is part of test routes? There are some pretty confusing mini roundabouts there and I don't know when or if to indicate on them!

Glad you like our videos. They can use any road they like on test routes, so if they go somewhere you aren’t familiar with just try to stick to the rules! Obey road markings and signs, and indicate if it will help others. Good luck 🤞🏼

Do you have to use a gps audio on the exam? I feel like Toby gets stressed by it. I bet he is a much better driver when he do not have to relate to so many instructions at the same time. I hope he has friends who can drive together with him so he can practice a lot and be relaxed and feel confident at the final exam. It is difficult to be focused when you get nervous, like he his here! When I am nervous I nearly cannot think clearly, and then it is easy to make faults... 80% of driving tests are given a sat-nav to follow, and the other 20% are asked to follow traffic signs. Perhaps it is more difficult to drive independently like this, but we’re glad it’s part of the driving test as it helps people get ready to drive on their own once they pass.

@@AdvanceDrivingSchool The sat nav for independent driving: Personally I find it better to follow signs. I observed in the video, Toby, mocking test, that it looks like he does not get the audio, so he has to turn his head a lot to gaze at the map. Maybe a language thing? In your country, can you chose to follow street signs instead for your driving test? And in general: Are the street signs good enough for independent driving (without a nav map) or do you have to use cars equipped with gps?

@@mabb6969On dual carriageways the signs are good but less so around town. Honestly I only rely on signs when I’m close to where I’m going. They aren’t that useful for long distance driving, so most people use google maps when going to unfamiliar places.

Upgraded my license from an auto only which I’ve had for a year to a manual and passed. Examiner was a little harsh at the end and said she was surprised I had been driving a year already. But oh well, I passed so who cares.

Thanks for the amazing video as always just one doubt, At 6:42 when he was supposed to take second exit why it was considered a serious fault? I mean what should have been the correct position (extreme left lane to go straight ahead?) Thanks in advance

The small white sign before the roundabout instructs us to use the right lane when going ahead. Getting this wrong could cause danger (especially with another car close behind us) so a serious fault is given.

About 11:18 , so how far or how long time will be the tolerance of overspeed in exam while the car is beginning braking just before or at the speed plate? Like if approaching a blind bend (not so tight) and you can only see that plate after the bend, and you started braking from 50mph to 30mph only 30m ~ 50m before the plate, but still 40mph when reaching the plate, how long will the examiner tolerance after the plate? And also, how harsh braking is allowed in exam due to the lower speed limit? Like -10mph per second?

We should not exceed the speed limit at any time. Any braking should be smooth in order to demonstrate good car control. If you speed or brake harshly it will be judged according to the situation you were in, and how dangerous it was.

@@AdvanceDrivingSchool So on the other hand, is it a reasonable excuse I begin slowing down right before I see the plate just because I have a feeling that speed limit will be decreased soon ahead? And I tell the examiner the reason I do so in case I have to slow down.

If you can't complete your manoeuvre to a satisfactory standard you will be given a serious fault i'm afraid. Get lots of practice and good luck! 🤞🏼

At 8:25, what could have Tobi done differently to avoid the serious fault? Maybe slow down and wait for the lorry to pass before joining? Btw love all your content, really useful 😁

We have experimented with trying to do that, but found it difficult to synchronise the graphics to the camera footage!

Sorry, in 6:25 for what reason does he gives a serious? He was on the right side before the roundabout as the sign said. and into the roundabout he was in the right lane then after the first exit, he went left lane! Wasn't it?

Perhaps it’s difficult to see on camera, but he positioned in the left lane. At that roundabout we must use the right lane to go straight ahead so he must be given a fault of some kind. Since the black BMW was directly behind us being in the wrong lane is potentially dangerous and therefore a serious fault is given this time.

If you are asked to drive independently the examiner uses a standard TomTom sat-nav, and it speaks to you just like in this video. Some tests however will follow road signs instead, so be ready for either. This video might help: Independent Driving: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i7thqZCE1L2qZ40.html 👍🏼

Out of interest at 6:40 you gave a serious fault for using the wrong lane (left lane instead of right one to go straight), but we saw one video on your channel with Annabel (4 years go) who did the same exact mistake and it was marked as a minor. Do you know what the difference is?

The same fault can be marked differently, depending on the situation. For example if there are no nearby vehicles a minor fault might be appropriate, but if someone else is nearby then there is more chance of danger so a serious fault could be given.

Right. There should be a more isolated setting for the horn test, especially if he is supposed to press it for such a significant amount of time.

The serious fault at 19:10 seems a bit harsh. The passing cars were on the other side of the road and weren't very near Tobi's car.

Almost exactly the same thing happened on a real test recently. The examiner explained that they didn’t fail because they got in someone’s way - it was because their observation was poor and they didn’t know what was happening around the car.

Firstly, keep looking all around the car for hazards. If you spot approaching traffic, stop your car once other vehicles get about 50M away, and let them pass us safely. If the other driver decides to stop, then we can continue the manoeuvre. 👍🏼

This driving instructor is clearly ill prepared and inept. He has a confusing conflicting sat nav and then penalises the candidate trying to follow the sat nav and his subsequent instructions which countermand what the sat nav has instructed.

Every sat-nav has errors in it - however we use the same brand of sat-nav that the examiners use, and the exact route was copied from a real driving test a few weeks ago. In fact the mistakes seen on this mock test were not caused by the sat-nav, instead they were mostly due to poor observation and forward planning. The driving test is designed to assess a driver in real-world conditions, so they are well prepared for driving after passing.

@@AdvanceDrivingSchool I am aware of the Tom-Tom Start 52 model used by DVSA. I also understand the rationale for the Agency procuring this brand was the ability to pre-record test routes. At no point on any of the 3 driving tests I sat before passing did the examiner ever have to intervene to countermand or deviate from the instructions given by the sat nav. Conflicting instructions are confusing to the candidate and errors can be made through them focussing on processing what is being asked rather than on the actual situation in front of them. I appreciate that the purpose of the test is to assess overall independent performance in everyday driving situations but it is not fair that that should be contingent on the vagaries of the equipment provided.

Fair enough. We get to watch many real driving tests from the back seat, and at our local test centre there is often the need for an examiner to clarify or correct the instructions from their sat-nav. Perhaps the roads in your area have less mistakes! Nevertheless, we are just replicating what happens on real tests, so that is in no way being ‘ill prepared or inept!’

@@AdvanceDrivingSchool I accept what you say and appreciate my directing all the criticism at the instructor/mock examiner was overly harsh. I appreciate the quality of advice given in your other videos. I still maintain however that sat nav technology is of questionable accuracy and quality and is not ageing well. It is purely elective for a driver to use it after passing the test so not sure why DVSA deem this equipment to be an essential component of the majority of tests. Following road signs or verbal instruction is a better test of driver observation, awareness and interpretation and is remarkably free from software glitches. Thanks anyway for listening to my rant!!
