So the aeon thing is explained in the game. At the end of FFX, the Fayth wake up and move on from Spira to the Farplane. This keeps them from being able to summon Aeons. However, in the Farplane, Shuyin corrupts them and forces them to summon, hence the aeons reappearing at the temples (as they have giant holes leading to the Farplane where the Fayth are being forced to summon) and why they're the dark versions (again, corrupted by Shuyin). Fun video as always! Something about the way you just say something and keep going tickles me.

Agree on your take on Black Magic on FFX-2 (why they thought it was a good idea to remove Flare and Ultima from the Black Mage???). Magic characters in general has always been did dirty not only in ff but in most turn based rpgs. The fact that they need to use mp to function at all (often with next to no mp recover abilities and items) while physical characters can often outdamage them for free with just the regular attack is a dumb design imho.

Like, on the one hand, the "hot springs episode" is a staple of anime, which the game is clearly inspired by. But on the other hand...it is so, so out of left field. I think it would have gone over a lot better if it wasn't so *clearly* only in the game for fanservice. It is even stranger because most of the rest of the game seems to be targeted towards a girl audience, not...pubescent boys.

So for those curious about the Dark Aeon/Yuna not having summons thing it's actually pretty straightforward- When Vegnagun breaks deep into the Farplane Shuyin follows it down there. Since Yuna sent the Aeons at the end of the previous game they were down there for Shuyin to take control of (possession is his thing as a vengeful ghost). So he sends them up to make sure nobody comes down to stop him before he fires Vegnagun's cannon. Yuna doesn't have summons anymore because she allowed Yu Yevon to take them from her one by one during the final battle in Sin in order to send (aka kill) them, leaving Yu Yevon out in the open with nothing to defend himself. So as of X2 the Aeons are literally "dead" in the Farplane, ripe pickings for Shuyin's possession shenanigans.

I love this game dearly for the bizarre fever dream it is. I appreciate the absurd juxtaposition of X being one of the most heavy games in the series and this being so silly. It's hilarious as a concept. Idk, I I'm the type of person who loves campy cult films too, and FFX-2 is kinda like that. Also, I love any game with the job system, and this game has one of my favorite iterations, alongside tactics.

Even on multiple New Game Plus playthroughs, the Death Blast leopards still cause me game overs!

The reason Elma's able to take two turns in a row like you mentioned is because of a quirk of the ATB system. With magic spells like sleep and slow, there's that blue ATB gauge that charges up until the attack goes off, and once it goes off you're immediately able to choose another ability. In her case, she's going from Sleep/Slow into a normal attack, which goes off instantly and then gives her the equivalent of your Green ATB gauge to charge up. To make up for those double turns, she's actually a bit slower when getting the spell off after a normal attack, since she has to wait through the green bar and then the blue bar's chargeup animation. I'm sure someone else has told you this, but I couldn't find it.

Tips and tricks: The stat boosting in this game is weird and unexplained. It’s treated like Pokémon, where the Songs boost the stat by 1 and you can keep doing it till it gets to 10 in battle. I don’t know how long it stays in effect. The garment grids gives you boost if you change dress spears during battle, follow the line, and activate the nodes. Yet another thing I don’t remember the game explaining well (which might be a theme at this point).

I would normally complain about something like this, but the Aeons showing up again and attacking you was an excellent emotional gutpunch. Yuna spent the ending of the last game literally murdering these friends of hers, and now here she is facing them as adversaries. It's using gameplay to hammer home this game's narrative about how simply cutting the head off the problem (Sin) still doesn't fix the problem (a chaotic and subjugated world that can't look after itself.) You didn't solve the problem, now face it again.

So fun fact: it's actually legal to marry your first cousin in Japan. It's not common anymore but it's not frowned upon like it is everywhere else

Bahamut has always had the weakest overdrive in 10 its main selling point being its the earliest to break the damage barrier. Also were the dark aeons even in the original version of 10?

As others have said, Aeons disappeared because the Fayth didn't want to dream anymore, they were tired of dreaming. Which, I mean if I knew I was in a dream and couldn't wake up from it, yeah I'd be a bit bothered honestly. I didn't have the updated International version for FFX until the PS4 version released(so like, what, 10 year later? 😅), so I had no idea that the dark Aeons were anything special, I thought they fit quite nicely with the theme of a nightmare or a corrupted version of the Aeons I knew. FFX-2's ATB felt like a breath of fresh air, I was absolutely in love with it despite some of the class balancing. I don't think I noticed any of it, though I was one of the few people in my circle of friends who liked it, and I couldn't like it openly because gay bashing was still(and still is in many circles) the default reaction to anything not hyper-masculine. As for the oversexualization, yeah it kinda rubs me the wrong way. I think as a kid I was just like a titillated teenager who just liked all of the costumes, sexy poses and innuendos, but as an adult it's a little more than distracting, especially since Rikku is still underage. I've always seen the game as a sort of nod to Charlie's Angels, but that series is also rife with poor representation and very tired tropes, even if X-2 was the best representation of that specific brand, the brand itself is just not the best way to tell a tale of a trio of women and their treasure hunting group's escapades, especially given the typical male-focused audience in 2003. I think a lot of work could have been done to represent them in a better light. The story as a whole is not bad, it's entertaining and one of my sleeper picks for a FF playthrough, but I think the more time passes, the more poorly X-2 ages. I appreciate it for its attempt at showing Yuna trying desperately to chase and move on from her lost love, but I also think FFX was tragically perfect. I'm always torn in that regard, I want Yuna to be happy, I want her and Tidus to be happy, but I think a better story would have been to actually have her move on, though in hindsight, the ending to X where Tidus is shown to be _clearly alive_ leads me to believe this was planned all along, despite what one of the writers, Kazushige Nojima, seemed to intend with keeping the tragic ending canon. But I think he was probably outvoted there. I think a better ending would be sans Tidus, Yuna moving on because in what world is an 18 year old losing their first relationship and never moving on at all realistic or relatable? Like it's tragic, but honey people typically have several relationships before finding the right one for them, and most of the time they fuck that one up too. Tidus should be remembered but I think it would have been a more powerful story for Yuna to have moved on, like how the normal X-2 ending implies. The perfect ending basically is wish fulfillment, and I don't know if I like it lol

Where you fought the death cat is the boss there a blue element fight? I remember some fight where i fought 3 oversouled blue elementals and had a tough time warned a relative about the fight and then they got a single normal element and beat it easy ☹️

Funny but my group was planning on being Songstress / White Mage / Trainer. Sadly I missed trainer. I was using a guide for the classes and it said it was Acquired in Chapter 3.. then the next line says "only if you made the right decisions early on in the game". Very frustrating. My Main group ended up being... Yuna: White Mage / Black Mage / Gun Mage / Songstress Rikku: Songstress / Thief / Alchemist Payne: Warrior / Samurai / Psychic Overall X-2 is still one of my favorite games. The story wasn't particularly good but the classes and dressphere system are more fun than many other RPGs. The classes were really a blast to play.

Songstress dressphere is actually pretty decent if you can make the members stay alive. The longer the battle the stronger they got. The buff can stack about 10 times iirc except for accuracy and evasion (you can just use it once as the buff will be at max). For starter, use Matador's Song because the evasion boost is very noticeable and can get you through a LOT of physical attack based enemy. And from there just boost your defense or attack, rotating between each buff every other minutes because it can expires. But it has been so long since i played it cmiiw

I think if you farmed and leveled up those dresspheres 11:15, those deaths wouldn't have happened. Gunner has a skill that ignores defense for the armored creature, White Mage has shell and Songstress has a number of abilities that would have been useful there.
