Many people take DNA tests for ethnicity results. Living DNA focuses almost exclusively on the regions you mentioned. So, I'm happy that you're finding success with your results.

The problem with YDNA is that it is a test that is not as popular as autosomal DNA. So, the chances of resolving this question all depends on whether your genetic matches have taken that test. The likelihood of using 4th cousins or 5th cousins to crack your brick wall actually depends on a few factors. First, can you identify potential relatives that could be your 3rd or 4th great-grandparents. When we have NPEs, we often need to look at the FAN Club of known ancestors to find potential ancestors. Then we test our theories in our family trees by seeing of those candidates have descendants who have taken DNA tests. If they have, then we look to see if those descendants match us or one of our other DNA matches for the lien of interest. (We don't share the same DNA of our genealogical 3rd or 4th great-grandparents, even though they may be related. That's why we need to compare possible relatives with all of our known relatives of the same common ancestor. They might pick up the DNA we don't have.) So... develop a possible list of candidates for the unknown common ancestor. Then test those theories using DNA.

@@FamilyHistoryFanatics Thank you so much for the detailed reply. To answer your question, yes, I actually have identified all my third cousins. The problem is their DNA will likely produce a match, but I already know their family connections. This is why I was hoping that 4th cousins might reveal if my 3g-grandfather was the result of a NPE. If no luck on that angle I was hoping 5th cousins might reveal my 4g-grandfather and thereby help pinpoint the 3g-grandfather. My surname is extremely common, and presently there's a Y-DNA surname project containing over 700 kits with my last name. Again, it seems like a long shot, but I know numerous 5th cousins must exist, but not all will match me and perhaps few or none have submitted DNA. So this leads to my final question: do you feel my odds are better with autosomal DNA, or Y-DNA? One problem I foresee with autosomal DNA is that it detects all maternal matches too which seems like considerably more research to identify a 4g-grandfather. Any advice or links you can share is immensely appreciated!

I had more results from 23andMe and Ancestry, simply because they have been around longer, have more brand recognition, and have larger databases. But, I don't regret being in Living DNA. I hope they'll add more research tools soon.

Both terms are used interchangeably in English.
