Building muscle and losing fat at the same time? How is this possible? We're normally told that we can only do one at a time, either bulk to build muscle (while adding fat) or cut to lose fat (while losing muscle). But is it possible to avoid all of that altogether? Let's check out the research to find out.

I personally saw the slight caloric deficit with high protein intake and consistent strength training definitely allowed me to build muscle and burn fat over time. In about 6 -8 months I burned 30 lbs and leaned out while gaining some muscle mass. Literally eating almost anything I wanted as long as CALORIES remained lower and PROTEIN remained high. Just takes time and consistency 💪🏽

You can do both, 1. Focus on low calorie food with high protein. 2. Lift and do Cardio, do Lifting first when you’re going to start every workout because if you do cardio first you will have less energy to lift and won’t get as many gains. To put into simple words, jjst be in a calorie deficet, go pick up some weights and get to work

I’ve noticed when I first started dropping the pounds I started taking more protein and I actually gained more wait but I looked way more lean I know it was muscle weight after this I learned that measuring my waist helped my confidence way more (if you plan to lose weight weigh yourself at the beginning and take measurements after that avoid scales for a long time just measure yourself and when you can see a big physical difference then use the scale if your anything like me I gave up on weight loss so many times because after months of hard work I noticed little change (the numbers mentally throw you off and weight loss is all mental and discipline) after I stopped weighing myself I stuck it through I went from 290 to 205 in 5 months I recently weighed myself and saw it I was at 240 (THANKS COVID) a lot of people put on weight from quarantine so I figured I’d offer some advice before I hop back in the game because I know how soul crushing it can be I hope you all reach your goal💪🏻

I think it's important to emphasize training experience. A novice can do a recomp easily. I would be curious to see literature on how EFFECTIVE a recomp for experienced lifters. While it may be possible, I wonder what happens when you compare someone doing a recomp vs someone doing a cut/bulk cycle in the same amount of time and how the results vary.

Just commenting to remember something obvious that happens with body composition assessment and can mislead some people: You weight 70kg and 14kg of it is fat, you have 20% of body fat. Then you go up to 80kg gaining 10kg of lean body mass and (luckly) maintaining 14kg of fat, your BF% goes down to 17.5% and that makes you extra happy, but you didn't lost a single gram of fat at all...

I have noticed body recomposition as I look back a couple weeks since I’ve been gaining more muscles aswell loosing some fat and getting thinner since I am chubby. I’ve also noticed how it’s gotten easier to do certain excercises, so I might need to buy some heavier weights soon.

I've been taking a fairly loose or happy go lucky sort of approach to my fitness journey. Just watching what I eat, trying not to eat too much crap and focusing more on healthy or nutrient dense foods. And busting my ass at the gym (I do climbing and some weights or calisthenics occasionally) I used to be skinny-fat, thin with a double chin. It's been almost a year, and I've seen some good gains. Nothing revolutionary, but noticeable even to strangers, however I've not lost or gained weight. It's been slow going, but I think talking it slower is better over all. Gives your body time to adapt naturally instead of trying to do it all super quickly

Been lifting for 10 years consistently and intensely (4 times a week+bjj). Last october, I started doing IF more intensely (18/6; first meal at ~ 6pm). This was by far the most significant and effective change I've ever made to my routine; In the course of a year, I put on 11 lbs of muscle (which is UNHEARD OF for me). Mind you, that was as an advanced/intermediate lifter, not a newbie. Furthermore, my testosterone shot up like crazy (not using any hormones/steroids) and I felt a lot better.

Something like that happened to me last year when i started going yo the gym. My goal was to gain strenght and improve athletic performance. I was already lean and never cared about looking super big and muscular and never had gone to a gym. I was already training 5 days a week doing gym and swimming practice, so it was really though for me to keep up woth my calorie intake. I wasn't doing a deficit, but more like trying to eat as often as posible as lifting weights combined with swimming consumes a lot of energy. I started tracking my weight at the gym and something fun was happening. The first month or two I lost weight, around 5 kilos, I guess I was struggling to keep up with all the exercise and I wasn't used to it. The the next few months I started to gain weight back, at this point I started having whey protein shakes and vitamins to try to help me keep up with my calorie intake. So I recovered my weight back but I wasn't looking the same as before, people were telling me I looked bigger and more ripped and while I felt stronger my weight was the same when I started going to the gym, it's just that I lost fat and gained lean mass and while it wasn't my objective I was doing exclusively resistance trainning, doing full body workouts and focusing on compound moves, while increasing my calorie intake but I did based my diet around eating more protein and carbohydrates.

@@lawrence8188 hey sorry been busy, to be honest there really is no perfect amount for everyone. Really depends what you are trying to accomplish. But I intake about 100-120 grams of protein day. I keep my calorie intake around 750 a day... with that said am focused more on extreme dieting, 2 years ago i was close to 280lbs. So I picked up low weight/ high rep lifting to tighten up as much as I can naturally. It has worked for me with steady lifting and cardio on the row machine. I'm losing about a 1-1.5 lbs a week. But I'm trying to burn more bad fat than build muscle. Bulking would require the opposite, high calorie and I've read to try and eat a gram of protein PER pound of body weight 😧.

Now was the resistance training circuit style or straight sets? Was pure strength or was hypertrophy or endurance ? How heavy were the weights? Were the diets no food restriction as long as they met the protein and caloric needs or was it super clean eating?

I am 5’8” female 203 lbs and looking to gain muscle. I do a lot of legs, glutes, abs, and back because my arms get one heck of a work out while I’m at work as a mechanic. I want to grow my glutes and I’m (according to a calculator) obese for my height and weight. I eat a lot of fruit and veggies and I love a good gyro 4 days out of the week. Do I need to gain weight in order to see more results or can I do it with what I am currently doing?? I haven’t really tracked my protein. If I had to guess it would be near 100g or so…(maybe lower near 60 or so) is that too low?? Someone recommended I lose weight before I started to build muscle but then I ran across this video. I have weights at home and resistance bands that I use 3/4 days a week and go walking on rest days just for the sun exposure but not as cardio. Any help would be appreciated!!

You can do it even with a surplus of calories, have done that 2 or 3 times in my life. Last time I went from skinny fat 67kg to all abs visible 78kg in less than 5 months. It only works if you had a longer break from lifting and muscle memory kicks in.

What if I’m skinny trying to gain weight but not get as much fat? Do I just tweak the first factor (caloric deficit) to eating a little more (caloric surplus)?

If you’re an experienced lifter with some years of consistency under your belt, you CAN successfully recomp using MEAL TIMING strategies. Im 5 years in, currently cutting and my strength and size have gone up simply from nutrient timing. Massive gains!

I never measured my body fat, but based on how I look in the mirror I'd say I experienced some accidental body recomposition. I let my eating get out of control over the summer and gained almost 20lbs in 4 months. In the last 2 months I've been able to moderate my eating and increase my physical activity in hope of loosing some weight. The numbers on the scale don't move much, but my arms seem to be more defined, and my abs are coming back.

I heard that red and pink muscle fibres run on fat better than on glucose. Meaning that endurance activity and light weight lifting with slow negatives and about 2 minutes time under tension are best done after eating a low GI high fat and moderate protein meal. What do you think Picturefit? Hope you get to see this and make a video about it.

You have the fuel from body fat that you need to build muscle so it can happen, I got leaner and am building muscle and strength. I do every rep and weight range almost every workout. It helps a lot with boxing.

Incorporating a powerlifting program with cardio while Eating a high protein diet at a caloric surplus slightly above my daily maintenance, has helped me with losing fat and gaining muscle. It’s a slower process but that’s the way to go.

years ago in college, i was able to lose fat% and gain muscle mass at the same time. Its a painstaking experience i'd say. I trained about 4 times a week, working on hypertrophy. For diet, I ate alfafa sprouts with toast for 2 months with whey proteins. No junk foods. Every nite before sleep, i would have some fruits, majorly pineapple, guava , and baby tomato. I cut down my daily calories consumption by around 20%. No fat, no sugar(except the fruits), no salts, low carbs, high protein intake. And every time before workout, I would have a mass gainer shake with 30 grams of protein.
