You can't even go over for regular free agents either, only few "exceptions" like - re-signing your star (Bird rule) or signing a veteran for a small number (Vet minimum) or signing a decent guy for league average salary (mid-level exception) etc. So most of the time when teams go over it's bc they have to pay their own stars

There seem to be two different schools of thought on what "buying a championship" means. This video suggests that it just means you have the highest payroll, but the definition I grew up with is buying a championship means instead of drafting and developing players you just go out and "buy" the best free agents available, which is what the Lakers and Yankees have been notorious for doing.
@craigG80

The Yankees have always had one of the top farm systems in the league, so they do both really. True they buy the best free agents, but they also develop plenty of their own players.

@@MattMajcan I don't feel like it is. I feel like drafting and developing players, then paying them as they get better is the "right" and respectable way to win. Whereas just going out and buying superstars like Lebron James, Anthony Davis, and Russell Westbrook and building a super team is just buying a championship. If you joined a team, practiced and worked hard and eventually won a championship you'd feel a lot better about having a trophy than if you just went to a trophy store and bought one.

The way it works in the NBA is that teams have to stay under the salary cap. However, they are allowed to go over the salary cap only to re-sign their own players who are free agents. So for example, if during the summer your roster is $100m, and the cap is $120m, and your biggest star is a free agent, you can sign another player for $20 million, and then re-sign your star player for, say, $40m, and have a payroll now of $160m.. $40m over the salary cap. And each year you are over the cap, you incur luxury taxes, which can really add up big-time. So you can't just sign players over the cap and pay tax. It has to be a re-signing of your own player.

The draft system definitely has a big big flaw in that it incentivizes tanking. But one big advantage it has over the European football structure is that it also incentivizes more long-term thinking - no way Chelsea lets go of De Bruyne and Salah if it were the US It allows smaller teams with smart front offices & scouting to have a chance, unlike PL where even w/ a miracle season like Leicester City in 2016, ultimately that didn't lead them to really join the "Big 6" - instead they got raided & lost Kante, then later Mahrez etc One thing I really dislike about European Football is that it's especially cruel to the teams that are "new risers" - the likes of Southampton a few yrs ago, Leicester, and the likes of Spurs, Dortmund, Atleti etc - stuff like Lewandowski forcing his way to Bayern when BOTH TEAMS WERE IN THE CL FINAL AND WERE FIGHTING FOR THE BUNDESLIGA TITLE - that's some weakass move by Lewa that should turn him into a villain in America. Guys like Harry Kane constantly being told to move to a "bigger club" is so dumb - I swear a lot of European fans would support losers like KD

There is a salary cap in the NBA. It’s not a strict as NFL but there is a ceiling. It’s called a soft cap, meaning once your team hitting the salary cap (let’s say it’s 135 million for the year). Any salaries given past that will be taxed to the owner of the team. Typically teams only go over the luxury if they are competing for a championship or believe they can win this year. But it’s not sustainable forever.
@tg_oleksandr1307
@tg_oleksandr1307 Жыл бұрын
The NBA has two different types of salary cap. Hard cap and a soft cap. Soft cap is about $134 million. Luxury tax cap is somewhere around 160 million. So basically every dollar they go over $134 million they have to pay a luxury tax to the NBA which at the end of the year is split up amongst all the teams in the league. Last year that was $660 million dollars. Golden state's owners have very deep pockets and are known to consistently go over the soft cap and pay more tax than any other team in the league. Also there is a 15 man roster in the NBA but a team must have at least 13 to be allowed to play a game. Usually 12 sit on the bench and three are in reserve for injury purposes but in general the last three people on the bench only see the court when the game is all but over.

Joe Lacub bought the Warriors for $450 Million in 2010 and now they are worth $7 Billion. They created a small ball system that changed the game. They developed players within their system that other teams didn't give a shot or used them incorrectly like Curry, Wiggins, Green, Gary Payton Jr. They develop players and make them playoff stars or mentors in their system like Looney, Poole, and Iguodala. And they have an unselfish philosophy with some players taking less $$ than they were worth to help the team achieve greatness. So they didn't just buy success, they created it and now are in the position to pay to retain it.

14:30 Daz is correct, but this is not a secret anymore for NBA fans. You pretty much need a top 5-ish player surrounded by 1-2 top 20 players and good a cast of supporting players after that. This is why the formula for winning titles is to focus on building a “big three” of star players and then just fill the rest of the roster with cheap role players. I can’t remember the last team to win a title that didn’t have a top 5 player, because elite players in basketball have such a large impact on the game. Maybe the spurs in their most recent title? For example: Warriors dynasty: Curry is the star, Klay and Draymond are the next 2 pieces, and they had numerous key role players behind them. At their height, you add Kevin Durant to that and it’s no wonder they were unstoppable. 2021 Bucks: Giannis is the star, Jrue Holiday and Khris Middleton are the 2 key pieces behind him, and they had some good support players on top of that. 2020 Lakers: LeBron and Anthony Davis are 2 superstars. Didn’t really have a 3rd star, but LeBron is so good that for a long time he basically gave his team guaranteed spot in the Finals. This team also had a lot of good role players and it was the COVID-shortened season so it kinda threw things off. 2019 Raptors: Kawhi Leonard was a certified stud this season. Kyle Lowry and Pascal Siakam were 2 all-star caliber players and they had an incredibly deep roster all the way through.

To be fair, the prime Lebron salary was pre-CBA negotiations that raised the salary cap to allow .them to get paid far more. With the skyrocketing valuation of the teams and the cost of broadcasting rights, the players felt like they deserved far more (which I agree with 100%). They actually used LeBron's contract around then to prove that. They asked him why he took less to form the Heat's Big 3, and he said if he was paid what he actually deserved, he'd make 9 figures a year but he decided to play with his friend since he wouldn't get paid what he deserved regardless.

There is a salary cap of $150 million dollars and it goes up every season, however teams can go over the salary cap to resign players if they have a players bird rights. If a player has played on a team more than 3 seasons, they now have his bird rights. It helps smaller market teams retain players and prevents bigger market teams like a LA or NY from snatching them up. However, to balance it out, for how much you go over the salary cap, there’s a luxury tax to prevent teams from resigning everyone and it’s an expensive tax. The funny thing about the warriors is, is that they drafted a majority of their players and have their bird rights. There spending nearly $500 million to keep this roster together and 3/5 of that is spent in Luxury tax alone ($300 million) and their pissing off the league 👀🤣

Of the 4 main team sports only baseball doesn't have a salary cap. The NBA has a soft cap. There's a set limit but for every dollar over the over the team is penalized (I believe it's still 1-1 so if the cap is 150,000,000 but a team spends 175 million the team is penalized 25 million (it's called the luxury tax). As for what sets the cap the main factors are what the tv deal is and the amount of tickets sold.

For jersey sales in America (based solely upon what I know for the NFL, it all depends on where it is bought. If it is bought at the stadium or on the team's website, the team collects the sale and then discloses the sale quantity of each jersey to the players association. Every player gets a percentage, I want to say 10%-20%, of the revenue from their jerseys. I don't know if the league itself gets any of the revenue if it is bought at a team store, but it wouldn't shock me if they did.

There are plenty of max contract players now, but only a few get their own shoe brand that generate far far more than the salary. Now, it is Wiggins, but he is again the ONLY ONE...AND...we got Wiggins when NOBODY ELSE WANTED HIM AND EVERYONE LAUGHED AT US FOR IT!!! its weird how brits always think the salary cap system is better than having continual dominance of the large clubs like manchester. as an american i vastly prefer the latter system. Sports are so boring and meaningless when a different team wins every year.. like am i supposed to get excited because this particular hedge fund manager invested more wisely this year? I get way more pumped seeing a team beat man utd for the first time in 20 yrs.. its like, having a villain to beat, whereas in american sports i dont really care about who wins at all. the players all move around so often anyway. at least in english football theres still a shred of the idea of loyalty and passion for the city and club.. in american sports not so much. As a liverpool fan i feel this a lot.. the entire narrative of plucky liverpool taking down super rich man city doesnt exist in a salary cap world.. liverpool would just be another premier league club.

The big thing for the NBA is China. China is a *HUGE* cash cow for the league. That’s where most of this money is coming from

Also the warriors were a championship team, then their star players got hurt and they tanked and got high draft picks so when their stars got back they had young talented players on top of it. Pretty smart but bullsh*t way to win

Lol how is it bullshit? Their best player was Draymond Green. How in the hell do you think they were going to win with Draymond as their best player. They just got fortunate that it worked out in their favor. It wasn’t planned.

The owner doesn’t have a problem with spending that money. Other owners are just mad the warriors are running it up in chips🤣they only got that rich from winning.

sports without a hard cap need an asterisk when calling a team the champions. you can stave off rebuilds and be in the top of the league for decades. luxury tax, lol, the rich get richer instead of league parity.

Except that’s not what the warriors did. The warriors did not go out in free agency and buy all their best players. The majority were drafted and developed. The only reason their payroll is so high is because they managed to draft and develop a lot of good to great players. Why is it unfair that the warriors pay the players they drafted and developed?

@@saksit247 Durant was the ONLY big name free agent the warriors have signed during their title runs. Wiggins was a cast-off no other team wanted lmao. Don’t try to throw him into this convo.

Steph got what is call the Supermax since he was with the same time when he finished the prior max contract. The NBA's attempt to prevent players from leaving small market teams to go to what they think might be a bigger market team. Russel Westbrook makes more than LeBron since he signed his Supermax back when he was with the Thunder.
