Why would some one want to put a longer shock in their frame? As seems clear from Doddy's response, surely you'd mess with the geo of a well engineered bike.

As an Alaskan winter rider, I've seen people reduce wheel size and increase tire size for a much larger contact patch for more float in the snow. If the guy is going to go to a taller 27.5 or even a 27.5+ tire, his bike handling characteristics may end up fairly neutral and he gains the benefits of more air volume allowing him to run lower pressures for more float/patch.

I took a 2016 trance 27.5 and dropped in a 157x2 shock, a 160 lyric with a 2 degree slacker works headset. Bike is so much fun to ride. Super supple. Looks good and fun as f to ride. If your American and buy used from canadians you get a currency discount. Picked up a xl frame for 300 and a 2016 lyrik for 300. Do the service ur self and score giant lol.

Rule of thumb: if your eye-to-eye is too long, deduct the difference from the new stroke. You can also always use offset bushings, a max of 6mm per bushing. Also - don't assume MTB frames are super accurate in design down to the millimeter, there is some fudge factor in your favor.

To answer the last guy there, it sounds like you have set your sag and found you were bottoming out so have countered it with more air and are now running a lower sag. I'd definitely go for volume spacers and keep the sag between 25-35%. Countering bottoming out with more air just makes the back end stiffer. You've got a damn good bike there with some high-end suspension but you're not using it to its fullest. Defo spacers and correct sag.

Hey mate, that last question was mine 🙂 From memory I can't remember bottoming the rear shock out in full open mode. It may have come close with a few fast drops, however the O ring hasnt seen the very bottom of the shaft. Since emailing the gmbn team, I've dropped around 10psi out of what I normally would run and have been enjoying the extra plush that its provided, controlling that with the rebound the best I can. I guess at the time I emailed I was concerned that I may have been wearing out the dpx2 components alot quicker than normal due to what was required for me. I hammer along on the bike reasonably well, but I also understand what you said about not getting the full potential from it. I'm in the process of sourcing some volume spacers through the local bike shop and going from there. Cheers for your feedback Gaz & Doddy 🤘🤘

@@T40Z cool mate, no worries. The back end in my bike is uber progressive so even with no spacers and 35% sag it doesn't bottom out, but feels great.

Get a breezer supercell frame. Install 27.5 wheels, a 140 to 160mm 29er fork and you now have a burley trail bike thats super fun to ride on the cheap. 120 rear and 160 up front with flat handle bars. Sounds dumb but it all works out and its super fun, cheap and not very expensive.

Should have used a picture of a Foes for the 2:1 leverage ratio - Brent was the big advocate of 2:1 (versus the 3:1 or higher of most bikes). Tons of Foes bikes with 2:1 ratio. And, he did have a good point. The lower the leverage ratio the better off you are.

Hey Doddy, I got a question about rear Shox size. I’m thinking about to put a 230 x 60 Shox into my slash. That would give it nearly 160mm. Then I would also put a 170mm fork in the front. So with this I should have nearly the same geometry except of the height of the bottom bracket, shouldn’t I? Trek Slash: Rear shock size 230 x 57,5 Travel: 150mm Fork: 160mm

I am looking to upgrade the amount of travel in both my fork and shock to around 150mm in the fork to 140mm in the rear shock so I was wondering if I was able to do it or not. My rear shock doesn't come with a lockout so that's one of the reasons why I want to upgrade it. But for a 140mm shock I don't know what measurements I need for the shock.

#askgmbntech Hello there, I ride a 26” 2014 ragley blue-pig and have really knocked my rear wheel out of shape, it is not really repairable so I’m on the lookout for a new wheel. My question is if I should build up a new wheel on the same 28 hole dtswiss hub or go for an all new wheel. The wheel should be as bombproof as possible, but also affordable so probably aluminium. Weight doesnt really matter too much. Thanks!

I can inflate the tubeless tire with a standard floor pump, but i just won't get the initial pop from the bead, no matter how much bars i put into it. Depends on the leverage ratio, Most bikes have it between 3:1 - 2.5:1. Assuming its 3:1, by shortening shock stroke by 5mm you're going to get aprox 15mm less travel, if the slash had 150mm rear travel with 60mm stroke, you're going to have around 135mm rear travel in the rear with 55mm stroke.

#askgmbntech great content I am new into mtb and i love all the gmbn channels, I am always learning new things from you guys and improving my riding because of your helpful videos. So is it a big no no to ride with goggles without a full face helmet? would this make me look like a noddy and would I be breaking the mtb dress code if i did!?!? I find that the goggles look much better then the glasses and they provide more comfort

#askgmbntech Hi Doddy, I wondered what would happen to my fork if I keep it locked out while riding down a trail for more than just one ride and how the lock out system works

I have a Commencal Meta v4 and am looking at replacing my rear suspension. Currently, has RS Monarch 200x57mm installed. Would a 205x60mm will fit on it with no problems? Thanks!

#askgmbntech I am looking to buy a downhill bike but I'm not sure about which size to get. I am 1.88m tall and currently riding a Nukeproof Mega 275 in size L. It has the standard stem (which is 50mm i think) and a reach of 470mm. The Bike I am looking to buy is a Commencal Furious which I'm mostly going to use for bikeparks, jumps, tricks and stuff. So the question is: Should I get a L size frame with a 440mm reach because maybe a downhill bike has to be a little bit smaller or should I get a XL frame with the same amount of reach as my enduro?
