Can you Daily Drive a Toyota Tacoma on Portals? What you should know!

We started installing portals on Toyotas last year and we have received a lot of questions about them, but one stands out the most: Can you daily drive a Tacoma on portals?
In this video we discuss everything you need to know and consider. This Tacoma was the 4th in the world on portals, the only one we know of running long travel and 40s at this time, and it was already re-geared with 5.29s, so it's a VERY extreme case of daily driving on portals.
If you have any questions about modifying your Toyota 4x4 or want to install portals on your Tacoma, let's chat! Leave a comment below or find us here:

If you have the budget and want to do 37”s and up from the get go without messing with the differential gearing ratio, then portals is the way to go. The reduction provided at the hubs is going to even out the load. Ground clearance is awesome. This videos provide a good explanation of what’s all about. But as you can tell the foundation to get this done right is to have a bunch of money ready to do this stuff. Keep up the good work guys!

@@petejones6827 Portals increase the clearance in some places, Not all. They increase the axles distance from the ground, but the portal themselves are closer to the ground. Everything, and i do mean everything has trade offs. The crowd that speaks in absolutes is basically fucking clueless. In order to give in one area you must take from another. Its the name of the game. Compromise. Which is why building a dual purpose rig almost ensure its going to suck bigly at one of its intended purposes. This is why dedicated race vehicles and off roaders exist. AKA Trailer Queens. Because simply put, they are better at their single task.

Yea but how fast are you burning through your tires though? Or ball joints and rod ends? Or your power steering pump? The amount of additional force required to turn your 38s on that much of a larger arc is not insignificant. All that force has got to go somewhere. What about unsprung weight? "Werewolf portals are made of cast iron steel and weigh in at a whopping 106 lbs per corner in the front and 78 lbs in the rear - 368 lbs total! Weight is a very important factor to consider when looking at each brand. 74Weld is 162 lbs lighter than Werewolf." Did you have custom valving done on your shocks to match the huge increase in weight at the axle?

We didnt do anything custom to these prototype GOAT shocks. They are position sensitive internal bypass shocks, though, so it helps a bit with the extra unsprung weight. We’ll be doing some shock dyno stuff soon.

@@MSpeedThree obviously not the same exact thing, but I added brass portal housings to my 1/24th and 1/10 scale crawlers and it makes a big difference in stability and off camber performance. I'm sure it will compensate to some degree with the taller ride height.

@@marcochavanneI wonder if it actually lowers your COG in the average use case. Keep in mind it also puts the entire weight of the rest of the truck higher. It does however add that weight far from the horizontal center though which is essentially putting that weight on a longer lever arm.

Stiff small seats and cramped cab forever mark taco as tiny truck to me. It's not as comfortable nor roomy as full size truck, let alone three quarter ton and up truck. I understand point you are getting across that we all give up MPG in exchange for off road capability and there is no free lunch. Very nice truck but I think I'm stuck with a Nissan Versa. 😁 The car is cheaper than just the portals.

Hopefully a cast version becomes available for better affordability. Turning radius suffers & heims transfer vibrations and felt bump steer but 40’s may absorb crappy pavement better

What’s the noise level at. I imagine it would be loud because of straight cut gears.

It’s not as loud as the Procharger with straight cut gears and it’s about the same noise level as running big MT tires.

I don't understand why portal isn't used much more on trucks. Often you see a truck on big tires that you think has a lot of ground clearance but looking underneath there's always something that interferes, like differential or lower shock mount...

2 inches of extra tire height will only gain you a half inch to 1 inch of clearance at the pumpkin . Yep 4 inch lift kit and 36 inch tall tires gets an additional 2 inches at the pumpkin . probably an inch and a half because tire manufactures can't read a tape . There are a few reasons nobody wants them . This doesn't apply to independent suspensions . But everything works as a lever .On strait axles That is some serious leverage . Mas times velocity equals momentum . Multiply that by many hundreds of times , only god can comprehend the twisting forces multiplied when a portal is added to a strait front axle . Twisted axle tubes , busted frames , sheared king pins . A traction bar would have to be at least on the same plane as the king pin . Then you lost all advantage farmall b has ten horsepower and the flange to bolt its geared final drive is larger that the outer C on a 5 ton rockwell

why not just get a $3k hatchback to daily and keep the milage low on the rig? probably cost less than the portals

I’ve been curious about which would be the most removable/back to stock of the 2 options. I know the 74Weld requires a bit of modification to bolt up. While I love the idea of putting portals on the Trailhunter I have coming, jumping and climbing up that high all day on trails to get footage seems like it would really suck 😂.
@dwighthouser
@dwighthouser 5 ай бұрын
Both would be about equally the same to revert back to stock... maybe a SLIGHT edge to 74Weld because the Werewolf brackets get welded to the rear axle.

5.29s seems counterproductive with the portals. 4.10s * 1.35 portals would be the same as ~5.5s. Glad to seem the competition hopefully bringing the prices down.

can this be done on a first gen 4 runner with ifs and gear box, no rack? I have 4.88 gears and 33's on 3" lift. thinking 35's will now fit and gears are good to go. Has anyone tried portal boxes AND traxx set up ? That would be a king in deep powder.

It can be done on your 4Runner, I'd recommend contacting Werewolf directly. Rubitrax should be compatible as well.
