Here are a bit more details on the framing. This video was made with the do it yourself metal building folks out there that are in the same place I was in during the framing process. I am NOT a metal building pro, so take my advice with a grain of salt. Still, I am super happy with my new shop, and this is all the stuff I wish I had known before I got started.

Good job. FYI Anytime I drill into concrete, I use a large punch and a three pound hammer to score my mark. Helps to prevent drill bit skating. Something I learned installing wood flooring thresholds where I have to be exact.

Great video. I like the way you chat with the viewers like a good neighbor and explain the construction process. I also liked the way you used CAD in your presentations to not only solve problems but as a training aid. This video was very concise and helpful in understanding the nature of assembling that structure. I think you would be easy to work with.

I have built a few of these buildings in the past. Found that the screw in the ground dog anchors and long ratchet straps work great for pulling the walls straight. Most of those kits the metal isn't bent the greatest.

Thank you for the insight. For the laser you could do that during the day by shading the sun and using a digital camera on a tripod to take a long-exposure photo. You'd have to adjust, check, repeat but the photo would only take a second or two.

I am getting ready to start a versatube bldg, your tips and tricks will come in super handy, thank you for taking the time. I am putting up a radiant barrier between the studs and the hat channel to create that air gap between the outside sheeting and the radiant barrier. Hopefully that will go well. btw, you have the same colors i chose for siding and trim...nice looking build.

Hey brother, i just stumbled upon your video and channel. I have watched the first one , hummm, Maybe i dont want to DIY it. I have home building experience and many years of remodeling. Nothing metal though. My issue with outsourcing something is trust, quality and the dishonesty. I have subscribed, i appreciate all of time to explain and the honest heads up.

How do you seal the base rails to make sure no water gets in?

great work....I am thinking of adding a workshop/studio annex to my next home, probably a bit smaller than your project. Not sure if you mentioned it, but could you ball park what the materials finally cost? concrete included. I understand it will vary with vendors of course, just trying to stick some kind of budget number into my next property. Many thanks, great tips, great looking build!

The concrete cost me about $13, 000, but I got a much bigger pad than the actual building (53 x 44). The building was $26,900 when I ordered. That included delivery. The electrical was $4000, no fixtures. I spent about $1500 on lights and ceiling fans. The spray foam insulation was $5000. I expect to add an air conditioner soon, but the price on that is still up in the air. K&G Metals wanted $5500 to assemble the building. Those prices were late 2021. Hope that helps.

This insulation issue is very important. What kind of insulation was supplied and what is the R-factor? I am assuming the insulation is a fiberglass batting but If the insulation is suppose to be on the frame with the siding over it then the insulation would be flattened down making it less effective as insulation. It would be much preferred to hang loose on the inside of the wall and the seams sealed. But the spray foam insulation was a good move on your part and a better insulation method. I would have liked to known the total finished cost and how much more to go a bit higher for a possible half 2nd floor, about 20X30 or so?

If your slab overhangs your walls, then the rain will hit it and soak thru to inside. Need to do something to deal with that.

If you need 3 inches extra around the perimeter, it will increase the length and width a total of 6 inches in each direction, eg. 30' - 6" wide by 40' - 6" long for the slab dims. Now that I have established myself as an internet know it all, I have a question about the hat channel. If the pieces extend past a stud or truss couldn't you splice the next piece to eliminate needing to cut it to land mid stud? Just overlap and screw it together?

it was three inches total (1.5 inches on each side). The base rail sat on top of the 30 x 40 "platform". the extra was for the shoulder that the ratguard sat on. With the hat channel, outside metal, and corner pieces, the building measures 30'6" x 40'6". The hat channel doesn't fit one inside another that closely. It would have caused a "bulge" in the finished metal. Hope that clarifies things.

I’m no carpenter so honest question: having a lazer level set to “line of sight” as a height, how many times did you get blinded while working?

Not many. it was approximate, and I was working with the laser to my back most of the time.

So I have to ask maybe a silly question. When you leveled, using the laser, by lifting up the studs is all the weight now resting on the screws as opposed to the stud sitting on the base plate? I congratulate you on attempting and finishing this project. I tend to shy away from stuff like this because it's very difficult to do anything on a budget and having to worry about staying within that budget. I guess the old saying goes, if you think you can't afford it then you probably can't. Also it seems that builders have no standards or ethics these days. All about the money and the more they can get for themselves. I bet you built this thing better than most contractors could. Good job!!!

Yes, the screws bore the weight - 4 screws per wall stud. After the metal goes on, that's additional structural support, then the spray foam sort of glues it all together. This has been mentioned several times, but major snow load just isn't a factor where I live, and these screws are pretty hefty. Add to that, I have several projects coming later on that'll add even more support.

Seems this whole project was a nightmare. Should you opt for traditional wood post & beam given what you know now?

I would still do a metal building. When I placed my order, a 2x4x8 was almost $6.00, and they hit just over $8.00 at delivery time, so that was a big part of the reason I went metal. Even if wood were the same price, and I had to do it all again today, I would still go with the metal, but I would pay them to erect, then do the electrical myself. I thought I was gonna save $5500 by building it myself. The actual fact was that the down time cost me more than that in business. If I were going to save money somewhere, I should have saved $2500 on the electrical. I could have finished that in a week, and the building would have been up 2 or three months sooner...

Prices were changing from one week to the next... I left it out because I didn't want to give prices that were already out of date by the time the video was uploaded... I get asked so much, here is what I remember. The building was $26,900 unassembled. Concrete was $14,000 or so. Electrical was $4,000. Lights and fans were another $2,000. HVAC would have been around $15,000, but I am my own contractor. Spray foam insulation was $6,000. Assembly would have been another $5,000. That's all I can remember right now. If I missed anything, drop a comment.
