Have you wondered what the process from website to completion of buying a Morton Building? In this video I share my experience of the process and what it eventually cost me to buy the building in 2018.
A key factor in the cost will be the price of materials, specifically steel and lumber. For an accurate comparison look at those material costs in early 2018 when I bought vs the time you are looking to build.

I'm a foreman at Morton in Indiana. My crew and I just put up a 60x144 building last week for a farmer. This farmer had a 60x100 put up by us 10 years ago. After putting the second one up 100 feet away from the ten year old building. You cannot tell which is the new one and which was built ten years old. He is extremely happy with both barns. (Side note): the ten year old barn was hit with 90 mph straight line winds one year after construction. These winds knocked over 4 grain bins to the east and another "xbrand" pole barn to the west of his barn. His barn stood strong and needed no repairs. Great testimony.

Morton built my 42'x88'x16' in 2019 in Florida, wind rated to 140MPH. Total was about $120,000 for Morton, which included 5" reinforced concrete floor, 4 large overhead doors plus 1 18'Wx14'H sliding door, 1 man door, 4 windows, insulation, interior ceiling and some detail work on 1 side for me to connect a porch to. I paid for site prep ($7000 including some clearing, 30 loads of fill and a 300' driveway) and exterior concrete work (about $2500?) to others. I used Morton because of their reputation and experience; their competitors in Florida are not large and I wasn't comfortable that they could/would stand behind the price and product. My experience with Morton was excellent and I will use them again, probably next year, for another farm building. At then end of the day, even if someone quoted me 10-20% less, I would use Morton.

Thank you so very much for this very helpful video! As I'm sure you can appreciate, there are many decisions to be made concerning not just what kind of pole building you want, but the actual specifics of how it's constructed. Each builder seems to have his own favorite approach. Those approaches are tailored by how much they want the final product to cost or not cost. I'm in the process of evaluating various pole barn builders in the Midwest. I'm planning to build a tall 16 ft side wall open walled the barn, with clear span trusses at the ends so they will be no posts at the ends, to house our RV and future farm equipment. This has proved to be another one of those situations where "I don't know what I don't know", and so I've been doing much research and contacting builders. What makes my project complex is that without the benefit of girts and sidewalls and end-framing, the stiffening of the entire structure to prevent movement in the wind becomes a bigger issue. Morton's MFS foundation system seems very interesting to me. Currently I've been in talks with a company that uses the Perma Column system. Can you comment as to how the MFS system has worked so far? I really like the idea of using concrete columns, but I worry that no matter how good the fastening mechanism is, not having the post go all the way in the ground directly could create a hinge point where the moment of force will be focused at the wood/bracket interface. I'm more worried about the wood moving in the bracket, than I am about the bracket bending or breaking.

Thank you again for making this video. Your experiences were exactly the same as mine when building my Morton building in 2014. A couple of points worth mentioning for those who are price shopping. 1. It’s impossible to do apples/apples comparisons between different building mfg. when pricing out a building, there’s just too many variables. I ended up omitting all doors and windows when comparing. I used just a basic building with one service door in order to eliminate many of the variables. 2. Extra things Morton covered and most others did not. Granted these are things you paid for in the price, but it was very nice not to have to deal with them; Labor, porta potty rental, dumpster rental, insurance both workers comp and on materials, calling and scheduling inspections, ordering the amount and scheduling of concrete, labor, equipment rentals. In 2014 prices when I figured out a price comparison between a Menards building and all the other things needed mentioned above to erect the building including labor, Morton was only about $5000 higher in price. The insurance on materials coveres any damage from the time they drop off the material on site, to the final inspection. Menards didn’t offer any such insurance. Workmans comp is required in my state but it can be an item you are charged for and no workmans comp ins. provided with shady labor contractors. BTW I am not affiliated with Morton in any way other than being a customer.

Morton has very consistent construction methods and they are some of the nicest pole type buildings you’ll see. Insulating and turnkey of a building of this offering could easily double the price if totally finished out and that’s only if one can do a lot of the work themselves. Just saying. Barndominion comes to mind. Excellent break down and I like your structure a lot. Thank you very much.

Personal experience here: I was absolutely STUNNED when I got my Morton quote back in Spring 2019. I would highly encourage doing your shopping. Morton Buildings are fantastic and likely a superior build to most - do not get me wrong - but they are extremely expensive and in my opinion very overpriced. Depending on what your plans are for the build the actual building likely destroys your overall budget. My story: I was able to build a same-footprint FINISHED 30'x60' w/ 16' ceilings unit w/ a 12'x60' lean-to off back, loft space in 24' of the 60' (that Morton would not do in the build framework I requested) with radiant heat / 6" concrete floor (including boiler, insulation below lines & line run here), spray foam insulation, metal walls / ceiling in "garage" portion, 3' alum. knee wall / 3/4" plywood remaining vertical walls in workshop, 12" blown-in insulation in ceiling pine T&G walls & ceiling in loft, carpeted loft, and RAB LED lighting throughout (inc. electrical work) for $100k LESS than the Morton quote which was literally a shell. No doubt my build would have been close to $150k more at a min. had I gone Morton. I have the spreadsheet of every penny - these figures are real. Great great buildings... just the sticker shock is real.
@Unit2345
@Unit2345 3 жыл бұрын
I had initially asked to include a loft into the quote and my salesman suggested I look elsewhere for that work as Morton would be a lot more. Other than the actual building everything else is going to be an outside contractor and there's a definite premium for that. You're experience doesn't surprise me.

Outstanding Video, you relayed the info perfectly. You summarized elements very clearly, and I have a similar situation where I am exactly 100 miles from the nearest Morton office. It is interesting how the concrete came to 50% of the building, itself. I would have to have a driveway put in, same situation as yours. But now it is the post COVID era and prices have skyrocketed. The gamble will be whether material prices will ever come down.

Thank you for the information. Very helpful. Morton is very expensive when compared to other professional companies. I trust are good solid buildings. I tried to work with them but they were not interested due to overall cost. They seem to want the the bigger jobs that can make them more money. My project would have been a hay barn 40x40. They purchase their lumber and materials in bulk so the prices are not as fluid as they would have you believe. Other companies use the same sales tactic. Thanks again.

Great job on the video. You covered all the bases. My 2016 Morton was 70x42x16 with double 14-foot doors was $58k to Morton. I did my own site prep with a John Deere mini tractor. Also did electrical myself with 200+ feet of trenching. No concrete. All in costs for building, gravel and electric was $61k. I should mention that when the garage door contractor leaves, you have openers with no power wiring. They run temp extension cords and a generator to test the doors, and when they leave, the doors are inoperable until you wire them up.
