When I lived in Maryland I found a wee baby Hellbender salamander my neighbor told me they are endangered and protected in Md. you get fines and jail time for having one. We had a lot of rain and the creek across from the house was high and fast. We put the little fellow in a container and drove him up the mountain to one of the creek's sources to release it and as I went to set it at the edge of the pond I noticed there were at least 50 of the little buggers swimming along edge of the water. Little guy seemed happy to be home, we watched them for awhile as we figured we’d probably never see them again outside a zoo or internet, I was just happy to find that hidden little pond teeming with them.

I think the apathy towards fish is because culturally they're just seen as ornamental, expendable, and numerous. Your goldfish dies so you just get another one, it's such an easy and thoughtless transaction that I think it gets subconsciously applied to all fish everywhere. Plus the average person is painfully unaware of how ecosystems and species are affected by external factors, and it's such a challenging and depressive topic that I think most people are just naturally averse to it anyway.

i think people dont care about fish because from a young age we are taught that they are disposable. i remember my father buying me pet fish but he wouldnt buy me the proper equipment to care for them, and i was a kid so i didnt know any better. i was taught that fish just die sometimes and that they didnt feel pain. i have a feeling alot of other kids where taught this as well.

One thing I'll always thank my mom for is teaching me otherwise when I was a kid. Had fish and when I overfed them she took em from me and gave them to someone who actually cared for them right. Told me there is no second chances with animals because they are living beings. I forget what fish they were but she would tell me if I overfed them they'd end up gorging themselves on the food and die all the time.

too much free space. My rig allows me to fit 17 colossal squids inside both of my eyeballs. It's so cute to see them swimming around in there, and they have plenty of free space! I've considered introducing some sperm whales, they look badass and cool, and that's why I'm getting them. Hopefully the squids and the sperm whales should get along well and become buddies!

Where I live the mudminnows are used as bait sometimes, the issue is that the Olympic mudminnow is only native to like two watersheds and not only is it threatened but also the only species in its genus. Closest relatives are pikes and muskies but it gets no respect.

@Exquailibur

@@fishnerd9048 The Olympic mudminnow is actually more related to the pikes and pickerels than to other mudminnows, its just the mudminnow body shape is the base form for the Esociformes. Mudminnows just retain the base body shape instead of evolving into predators Olympic mudminnows are the only mudminnow west of the Rocky mountains and have both a small range and no close relatives, even the pikes and muskies are only distant cousins. So they aren't true mudminnows just distant relatives that look very similar

@@fishnerd9048 Makes sense when you take geography into account the genus Dallia with the Alaskin blackfish are also found on the west coast and are also more closely related to Novumbra than to Umbra. Novumbra diverged from Esox like 60 million years ago by some estimates, so its not like the Olympic mudminnow has any actual relatives, just some species that are more related than others. Because of this its safe to say the Olympic mudminnow is quite unique even if it looks pretty typical

I am really lazy so i put a lot of effort into making my aquariums stable, mine can easily go a month or more with no maintenance the only thing is the water level is reduced and my pearl gourami might eat my neon tetras if i didnt feed them long enough. Fish are cold blooded like reptiles so they dont need much food, this is especially true for my tanks which all have wood and lots of plants and dead leaves. I did a lot of research on people who farm fish, old people who have had fish for decades, I had to learn a lot about watersheds and wild fish, and I had to learn a lot about plants, my aquariums are not thought of as aquariums by me but i think of them as systems or as actual waterbodies. It took a lot of time but now my aquariums dont need their water changed really ever, the only time i do is if there is something wrong because as they are now changing water actually does more harm than good due to changing the water chemistry. Aquariums when set up right get more stable with age, but it takes certain conditions that vary depending on your water, your plants, the desired water conditions, and more. Basically if you can figure out how lakes maintain themselves you can get those systems and cycles running at a smaller scale in your aquarium, i find that the plant mass has to increase with the nutrient amount and that large aquariums are far easier to get stable. Also how i keep fish stocking has to be kept a little on the low side usually, though with the right plants it can be surprisingly high.

I'm probably biased, but I have a simple "system" Animals that really enjoy being with humans are alright as pets - cats, dogs, ... Fish and any aquatic animals (probably reptiles too), I have nothing against owning them, as I think that if someone takes well care of them, and provides almost perfect conditions, they're gonna be mostly as "happy" as they'd be in the wild Birds however, with how fast they are and how expansive their habitat/territory is, I think it's immoral to keep most types of birds. I don't know, I see birds as somewhat intelligent creatures, and I think that unlike tanks, there is no cage big enough to give a bird as much space as it should have
@theaveragecomment1014
@theaveragecomment1014 7 ай бұрын
Yeah! Most kinds of birds make sense that we shouldn’t keep. Though we do have some domestic birds like chickens are obvious. There’s also pigeons which while less obvious are also domestic! And you can keep them while also letting them free fly which is awesome. I love pigeons. I’m such a nerd for them

@@theaveragecomment1014 Funnily enough I was thinking about birds that may be exotic or have a big lifespan, that are put for adoption, which is kinda related to AVNJ's example of the animal sanctuaries I suppose. Somehow I didn't think about chickens and those kinds of birds xD, but yes I agree! Ohhh yeah we used to have pigeons too when I was a kid!!! We had an elevated cage (more like a coop than a cage) hanging from a wall, and I think most of the time they spent in it was just at night to sleep! That's a cool compromise, we still get to own them, they still get to roam free.

Not watched the video yet but I keep a few tanks with various fish. Most of them do well and thrive quite well in my care ( even natives like sticklebacks) but i'm currently downsizing and switching to keeping moths ( and butterflies) as well as tarantulas and a crayfish which I caught from a lake too. I prefer smaller types of fish since they can be kept in bigger numbers in larger tanks but I have some bigger fish like a gold synodontis, a baby hoplo catfish and a jack dempsey.

Eels are a crazy (and mysterious) - AVNJ you must do a video on them. Pretty much any full grown Eel in the UK or much of Europe has travelled to the Americas at some point. This was all realised when they couldn't find any young eels in our waters. I'm sure certain ones break loose from this cycle - But look up European eels and their life cycle - It's honestly so cool.

The dogs enjoy it and the humans enjoy it.. Dogs are called mans best friend for a reason.. Immediately responding with saying your pets are objects, bred to enjoy being used as objects pretty much sums up and proves the entire point he was trying to make lol. For every highly trained, expertly bred working dog, there is a dozen or more "cutie pies", warped and deformed by those same 6 thousand years to have barely functioning organs, mental breakdowns, breathing difficulty, and cute little squishy faces. It doesn't matter who's ancestors did it, we can't praise one half and ignore the other, it'd be incredibly irresponsible, and we as humans are responsible for all of it.@@scottc346
