This is my second favorite of your videos, and the first to make me want to go out and search for the specific wines you reviewed. I'm definitely going to get that Bordeaux, and even though I've been avoiding American wines while I learn the ropes (I'm a real newbie to red wines and on a tight budget), that Pinot Noir may be too hard to resist. Good job, Matthew - keep up the good work!

LOTS of good advice here. For one checking the importer on the label. And yes finding a wine critic whose taste match up to your own. Or at least realize the taste of that critic to benchmark against your own. I've noticed that my taste seems to follow yours in general. 5-10 years ago I probably would have preferred that Goru Gold. It's still a decent wine but my taste has moved from there. And with working in wine retail it can be tough recommending wine to people. The way I see it everyone is on their own particular wine journey through their lives. In my younger days when I was first getting into wine I would hate the wines I'm into now. And of course now I can't believe some of the wines I used to like years ago. For a lot of people it's like trying to feel them out and see what part of the wine journey they are on. For some the journey changes a lot and progresses. For some maybe they find a spot they like and stay there. And for others, they stick with those early wines they first started drinking and never leave that spot. And yes that Pinot Project PN is one I recommend to people a lot who are either new to wine or maybe new to red wine or even new to PN in general.

I have learned not to take these points too seriously. Grape and region are more important to me. Even then it's potluck most of the time with cheaper wines. There are so many. My problem with cheap Bordeaux reds is that they lack the fruit but don't have much to offer instead and have something of the wet newspaper to them. Can you make a video on how to choose Bordeaux wines under $20? Love your enthusiasm! Many thanks!

Absolutely agree with you regarding wine critics. Suckling gives out points like it's candy and Parker (WA) was responsible for the "Parkerization" of wines so I'll leave it at that. As I mostly drink and collect Bordeaux, I often find Neal Martin's ratings and comments to be good reference points.

How people perceive wines is extremely subjective and depends on the circumstance. You always hear the joke that when blind tasting people can't tell the difference between white and red wine. So for fun we did a test and chilled a red wine and let a white wine warm up to room temp. Then we let multiple people at a party try 4 wines (red warm, red cold, white warm, white cold). 3 out of 4 got some wrong, which I find pretty telling about what to expect from a 100 point wine rating.

I love this video. The points system isn't perfect. And it needs to be regulated by a major governing body but. Unfortunately this is the best tool we have to rate and buy our wine on. I personally prefer to shop by variety and region.

@@drmatthewhorkey thanks for the wonderful content. It's so underrated. Wine channels aren't a joke. Every video costs you a tonne of money and the views are minimal. Meanwhile buy $12 bucks worth of mince meat and cheese and make a burger and your some big shot. Damn shame. But I salute your dedication to the vine sir

I don't know much about wine scoring so if I consider a wine score at all it's just to know that this wine met the criteria to get that score. So it's "good" in an objective sense but whether I like it or not is still completely subjective. That being said, I LOVE malbec so I will definitely give that Trivento a try!

As a rough rule of thumb give or take 1 or 2 points. (Points - 50) ÷ 10 = score out of 5 95 = 4.5/5 90 = 4 85 = 3.5 Give or take 0.1 or 0.2 depending the critic obviously

My favorite wine critics are Parker, Dunnick and Vineous. These are the ones I know the best and I almost never go outside their recommendations. I realize I am probably missing some pretty good wines but there are just too many critics. These critics I know I can rely on.

@@drmatthewhorkey I have been subjecting myself to a lot of sub $20 Italian bottles lately and it's hard in NYC to find a good one. I have come to the conclusion Barbera is the way to go mostly. Or cannonau from Sardinia if you count that... Chianti is Russian roulette under $20

Though a good one I had last week was Mazzei Badiola Toscana 2019. I wouldn't give it 90 as a wine in general, but judging it at the $14 price point and where it came from it was about as good as one would expect for the cash in this day and age for an inexpensive italian wine with sangiovese as the main grape in the blend.... It was let down a bit by the slightest hint of va.
