Can you run Windows 10 on a 2008 netbook

Windows 10 was supposed to be even faster than Windows 7 and need less resources than Windows 8. 2008 may seem like a long time ago but there are literally millions of netbooks out there and it would be much better to continue using them rather than turning them into e-waste, perhaps Windows 10 is the answer.... or not...

Yes, I did have a look at Tiny10, I'm sure there are other slimmed down versions out there and of course it keeps the OS familiarity some of which is lost on a Linux setup!

Oh, the GMA 500... brings back memories... The first generation of Intel GMA is GMA900 integrated in i915, followed by 950 in i945. 500/600 were not even proper GMA, on top of not even proper GMA being suitable for anything. The background was that the power consumption of i915/945 chipsets was exceeding that of Atom CPU which made Atom a moot point, so Intel designed Atom-specific northbridges to solve that problem. GMA 500 and 600 were PowerVR cores licensed for those new chipsets. The old PowerVR was known for efficient design suitable for phones, except for horrible alpha blending(transparency) speed, which was the tradeoff, and GMA 500/600 were subject to those as well. Driver was bad, sometimes model specific, and occasionally the chip unavoidably seemed to quack like a phone rather than a monstrous upgrades to the IBM VGA that all desktop GPUs supposedly are.
@HandheldComputing
@HandheldComputing Жыл бұрын
On paper the GMA500 is supposed to be able to decode twin HD video stream, in reality it struggles with 480p even the recourse frugal XP thanks to its terrible drivers - I'm not 100% sure its true but I read that the GMA500 wasn't an intel design but came from a 3rd party hence why the drivers were so bad

If you stick to offline use, old Netbooks can make great portable emulation platforms for a whole range of 8 and 16 bit systems from the 1980s and early '90s. If your battery is in good shape, you'll get a reasonable amount of time away from a mains supply. A lot of older, late '90s and 2000s Windows games will run fine on them. They're great for entering and editing basic text and data on the go, and you can use older versions of software or lightweight apps for many tasks. It's easy to move files to your main computer for more advanced stuff later on. You don't have to worry about losing, damaging or theft of your modern, expensive laptop either.
@HandheldComputing
@HandheldComputing Жыл бұрын
Absolutely true, but then if you are staying offline XP remains a much better choice for the OS (especially for retro games as it still has DOS in there) taking far less recourses. I am hopeful that it might be more useable with a different OS or cut down Win10 like Tiny 10, we shall see!

I love the size of the vaio P series. I wish someone would make something with this exact form factor, since most mini laptop keyboards today remove the bracket keys and change the way I would type programs. It's such a shame there's nothing taking up the spot for it at the moment. Lenovo will be releasing the pocket yoga soon and it might be the next best thing, but I just cant imagine how much they'll be charging for it. So if anything, I'm hoping someone might try to make a cheaper copy of it when it comes out.

I would strongly recommend to try installing either antiX Linux or Bodhi Linux, both are still available as 32-bit. AntiX is running well even on a Pentium M processor and has low RAM requirements (after full reboot and load to OS it is around 120 MB of usage), so even 2 GB would be plenty. Bodhi could be okay-ish to run too, but with more RAM usage. Also Sparky linux came to mind, but I am afraid it is more suitable for Core2Duo class of CPUs.

Thank you for the suggestions, I will check them out, if sparky is for Core2Duo the Z520 is going to struggle I think! 120Mb of RAM is nothing, that's like a slim XP install, sounds good to me

I would be very interested in how Tiny10 (the stripped down version on Windows 10) would perform on this machine, compared to the original Win 10. I still use a Thinkpad T60 (Core 2 Duo 2 GHz, 3gb RAM) as my main computer due to the 4:3 aspect ratio IPS screen, and have Win 8.1 on it, but as you mentioned support is over for that version of Windows, so in the maybe not so distant future I will need to think about installing Windows 10 (or Tiny10 if it's indeed that much more responsive on old hardware). Unfortunately Linux is not an option for me due to quite a few Windows specific software I need to run.

I'm very fond of the Vaio P series so I'm pleased to see you feature it. I still have my VGN-P19VN in my little collection though I've not booted it in years (batteries will be toast by now). I was surprised to see you label this as a netbook, as I used to run it as a daily driver back in the day and I'm sure it felt more like a fully featured laptop than a netbook... though perhaps that's rose-tinted glasses! It's clearly struggling with Win10, but a quick review on Vista would be good to see. I only heard about Tiny10 recently, so seeing the difference on these types of devices would be interesting (though I assume you'll still have the driver issue) but I suspect you're right that a Linux distro may be the best bet for the P's future. Before the Vaio P I had a Vaio UX which is a device you should try to feature, especially as it was so obviously a massive inspiration for the GPD Win 3! FYI, there's some sort of prototype P11Z on eBay at the moment, also a lime green and orange Vaio P11... oh how I always wanted that orange one.... I'm so tempted. Edit: Ok so I caved... and clearly overpaid, but it looks to be in amazing condition and they very rarely show up.

I have a bit newer device - Asus eee1005pe, with atom N450 (1C/2T 1.6Ghz), 2GB RAM and 60GB SSD. I didnt even consider windows, it runs linux Mint 19 x64. The 2GB RAM limit for the early Atom CPUs is a major flaw, even in 2008 computers came with 4GB! Linux Mint is one of the variants I have been looking at, had a few other suggestions too so with luck might find something light enough to give a reasonable experience!

Hi. For a browser I strongly suggest Opera, even just for youtube adblock. Use ethernet connection as your wifi can be outdated. For simple linux check - BionicPup32 NG by Peabee - will work entirely in ram, can be instaled together with windows or on pendrive. Simple instalation from .iso I can play youtube at 240p, smooth, 360 with drops on 1.3 Ghz Toshiba R 200

I've read wikipedia about intel GMA and article says that some linux distributions have suport for your gpu, so while instaling check it first as it is crucial. I think Windows XP with linux on second partition could be ok for work/web browsing. It all depends what kind of job you need to do. H.264 Videos up to 720 are doable .HD in xvid are doable, DVD from .iso or .vob are doable. PDF reading - doable, PromotionNG, Photoshop CS, Irfanview, GIMP, Autocad 2005, Excel 2007 - doable

VAIO P is one of rare badly designed VAIOs. The CPU in this model actually throttles down from 1.3 to 800mhz and never goes up until you turn off the PC. Atom itself was also a flop. Sony Vaio VGN-U and VGN-UX from 2004 and 2006 respectively were much much faster machines with normal ULV CPUs. Even 2ghz Z550 was much slower than 900 mhz ULV with GM855 chipset from 2004. With ULV XP was very responsive, you should try VGN-U and UX

I guess if you added active cooling you might get better performance but the Atom CPUs on benchmarks only do about half as many computations a second as the equivalent clock Pentium M chips. Later generations of Atom CPUs do much better but this 1st generation are terrible, such a shame as the P11Z looks great and is an excellent form factor!
@kudryavchik
@kudryavchik Жыл бұрын
@@HandheldComputing yep, sony flopped on cooling side. It should have been active cooling. Device is fully plastic and the only thing that dissipates the heat is the carbon sheet. Moreover in hdd models the hdd is heating up like crazy. The device itself looks very nice, totally agree, but until you start to use it. Intel atom z is a disaster like transmeta.
@another3997
@another3997 Жыл бұрын
The Atom range of CPUs were not a flop. They powered a lot of lower end devices, in addition to Netbooks, fast Windows tablets and several mobile phones. They stayed in production for quite a while. They may not have been "fast" in comparison to contemporary desktop and laptop CPUs, but then none of those could match the Atom's low power draw. But attracting phone and tablet manufacturers from the well established ARM architecture was never going to be easy. Ironically, Intel themselves have been heavily involved with ARM for decades.

VAIO P was built with an extremely specific user persona, it was for non-STEM researchers looking for laptops that fits in luggages that aren't too office-like and usable on small flat areas, such as note-taking flaps on a chair or library desks with hardcover books open. It shall sit on a flat surface, handle Word or Excel, and Japanese IME, maybe 2007 websites, that's all. It's not that it did those tasks good, but it's not comparable to a lot of others for the fact that it was too engineered for that specific usage model.
@HandheldComputing
@HandheldComputing Жыл бұрын
The later ATOM CPU and integrated graphics chipsets are very good (see GPD Pocket 7 review) but these early ones were slow compared to Pentium M chips and the GPU drivers were terrible making decoding and encoding video heavily reliant on the CPU, that's not to say they didn't have a place in the ultra-mobile arena and of course without GEN1 there would be no GEN2....
