Netbooks were a massive craze back in the mid 2000's powered in the main by the Intel Atom CPU. Since then the size of windows and its demand for resources means these devices are becoming e-waste. What is we could find a better OS to breath new life into these diminutive devices? Well that's the plan...

Nice video! Kind of excited to see how ReactOS works, and which Windows drivers will actually install. Would be nice if the GMA 500 driver installed there. Also would be eager to see how ArcaOS runs, especially with DOS, WIN16, and WIN32 apps as well as Linux via Orca! And for a runner-up… Haiku. See if Be-OS inspired shenanigans get that super lightweight vibe going for better support? Plus I think a GMA500-DRI driver existed once upon a time.

Well there's a few ideas for me to play with! Vista first and then I will have a play, I did try Haiku but couldn't get it to work 😒 might be worth another go though

Nice video!! I have a thing for small and handheld PC's so you have a new subscriber!! I own a Sony Vaio VGN-P15L, (imported) and, while I love it I don't have a lot of time to play around with it. It's a really awesome form factor and I've considered trying something other than Windows on it but again, haven't had time. I've considered selling it but haven't been able to bring myself to yet, lol

Thank you for the sub! What ever you do don't sell it, you will regret it 😉 AntiX is the best Linus build I have found so far and I have tried a lot (most barely even get a mention) just trying to resolve the video playback and I think its a great option, easy to use and includes office and firefox out of the box!

Love this! In the netbook heyday you could swap the wifi card on most of them for a specific Dell card and run Intel OSX, which actually ran smoother than windows Vista on my acer aspire one! I don't remember which version I used, I think it was 10.5 Leopard and 10.6 snow leopard that were the best for netbooks. I remember you had to swap the wifi card because there were so few that had OSX drivers at the time. You should give it a whirl!

Swapping the wifi card is a good idea! The one in this (other than being old and not supporting N) is not very sensitive so while it gets online easily enough its not always a very stable connection. Also thank you for supporting the channel 😃

I think your video playback woes on Linux are because there isn't actually any graphics acceleration going on with the GMA500 - if I remember right that chip uses a GPU from PowerVR rather than an Intel-designed core. Put another way, it shows how good the little Atom CPU is at software rendering, considering how snappy the overall UI felt!

When I looked into it the GMA500 is supported by the kernel, just badly because as you rightly say the GMA500 isn't an intel chip. I did get video playback with Mint but the OS was no where near as responsive as it is on AntiX

No I don't, it's on my ebay list so with a bit of luck I might get one. I do have the Librettto w105 dual screen notebook though and will do a video on that when I get chance 😁

Wow that thing is tiny... _and weak..._ Btw you should run an adblocker on this. It will massively help performance in browsing and youtube vids.

It is very weak which is a shame as the form factor is amazing! Yes adblocker is a must!

@@HandheldComputing yeah I really agree there, the potential from such a form factor is amazing and I hope it is someday revisited with some of the modern hardware we see today, such as the new AMD APUs. Some of them have such good performance for the amount of power they draw. It could genuinely be a powerhouse for highly portable productivity and light gaming. I know I'd buy one of these if they were upgraded and stayed the same size. Hell, that thing could probably fit in the pockets of some of my pants and even if not, that can easily fit into an already loaded up backpack to easily take with me on a trip. I can just imagine a modern one, I can just stuff a game controller or a compact keyboard and mouse in my bag and easily hook it up to a hotel TV with a mini DP port or USB-C to HDMI/DP to game on after I get back to the room, all while easily fitting into my luggage.

@@RedVRCC That is the dream! The super wide form means very little compromise on the keyboard and easily have two windows next to each other 😀

@@HandheldComputing I have found same problem with my computer, but I'm using the frisbee to connect to modern routers. I did not have any issues back then. I'm still uing the computer until now. It's been on it's 16 years of existence....

I still run LTSC on a couple of older laptops, activated with MAS and have the WIndows Store (for Spotify etc) added manually. Works great on older dual cores and early i5 etc. The modern web is just too heavy for single core Atoms, I tried to get my old Dell 910 running properly and even lightweight distros and supposedly minimal browsers (that just look worse while not being any faster) couldn't help it.

I was really impressed by LTSB its useable on here just struggles with complex web content and you need to be patient if defender is running

I decided to look into it after this video, it looks like the default video player on AntiX just doesnt work, try using MPV it at least works for me with MP4 and MKV files (didnt have any AVI to test with) you could also install VLC if you like. the MP4 was only 480p but the MKV was 1080p and outside of not fitting on my little netbooks screen it ran fine from a flash drive.
@HandheldComputing

Thank you for the suggestion, I will give that a go. Video playback is about the only issue I had with AntiX and defo the best Linux I've tried on this device 😃
@HandheldComputing
@HandheldComputing 2 ай бұрын
SO I installed VLC and playback was poor but did work. The CPU was 100%. On further reading there was a GMA500 driver (not open source) released for Ubantu but not for Debian and as AntiX is based on Debian it cannot use the GPU 🙄 - a real shame as it was otherwise pretty snappy

@@HandheldComputing ahh :( that sucks. Yeah all I have is atom netbooks of similar specs. I dont believe Ubuntu supports 32-bit anymore as well which makes things harder with the proprietary driver. Turns out that the reason GMA500 doesnt work thought it never worked well, is what code did exist in the kernel was removed 4 years ago. Unfortunately it seems the GMA500 is just a Linux Nightmare.

@@chriswillis4960 This is what I am finding - tried Ubantu 14.06 yesterday (which apparently does support the GMA500) and it was so laggy it was unusable 🙄 TBH I'm going to Vista on it to see how bad/good that was when it was new and then I think I'm going to try windows XP as thet runs really well on the UMID Mbook and Viliv S5...

It does run well on XP, there are a few driver niggles as I recall but most of it works. I'm excited to put Vista back on it and see how good/bad it is 😉 Windows 8.1 embedded is a good shout, 8.1 ran pretty well on here when I tried it (years ago) it has a lot of options to streamline it
