Hands down, DIY is the way to go. I can't even relate to people who want to go to an all inclusive resort in the first place. One of the great things about videos like this is that you are educating people like me who are living in a "new normal" that is remote work. I am not retired yet, but I could replicate this vacation that you guys just showed us, while working my full time job. I would just have to stretch it out a bit due to the fact that I would be working but so what, I could stay there and do this for months. Great video, and just know that for me, you can never show enough cats ! I'm a cat person to my core.

Great video. We took 2 weeks in Puerto Vallarta this summer. Stayed at a resort bc it was an exceptional 2 for 1 deal. However, we ate like a local, skipped the high priced touristy restaurants. Went to taco stands and local restaurants in neighborhoods away from the hotels. I was determined to learn to ride the bus. Never ridden a bus in the US so this was scary for me at first. Best vacation we've ever had. So much less expensive yet we never felt like we were skimping. Yes a 10 pesos bus ride was not luxurious. But we did get an uber/ taxi for $5 if we were just too hot or if traveling at rush hour. The food!!!! Oh my goodness the food. The rotisserie chicken stands, taco stands, fresh tamales from a women selling out of a cart.... so much great food, but agree we didn't eat or drink nearly as much bc it wasn't all inclusive. Came home after 2 weeks and maintained my weight much to my surprise. 100% agree traveling DIY gives you more flexibility to experience the local area and make authentic memories the big resorts just don't offer. Can't wait to get to Thailand and explore!

Wow! I want to do that also in Puerto Vallarta. Sounds like you planned well. It does sound much easier to do AI, but too expensive and limiting if you want a more authentic experience. I like the idea of staying longer, eating local and walking around the city. What area of the city were you in? Zona Romantica?

Great video! Having done both resort and DIY, my answer is , it depends. Pre-retirement, there were times we just needed to relax and the resort vacation worked well, but we truly felt cut off from the country and people around us. Now that we have time, DIY is for us! Also, I love SE Asia for so many of the reasons you lay out! I was shocked when Sarah put up the expense comparison, then gratified when you added the 7 versus 15 days! Whew! Thanks again for a wonderful time following you two around! Gordon

Exactly. I’d prefer the All Inclusive luxury because I don’t have time to plan all these details and managing any unexpected surprises will be crazy and maddening for me. When I retire, I want slow travel, one month (or more) per city, just chill and relax and no need to rush

Of course, we always do the AI thing now due to one of us struggling with a mobility issue but if we could we'd pick the DIY. You did an amazing job with your selections of places to stay. I have been waiting to see this version of Thailand and it didn't disappoint! We always enjoy the cat interactions. Big fans here. Hey guys loved this video, and it made me think that we would definitely do the DIY over the AI any day! When our kids were younger it made sense do go all inclusive, but when we FIRE we will be going down the DIY route in south east Asia like you! Quick question about your future videos. Will you still be doing these type of videos where you show us a lot more of a place, plus the associated costs? It would be good to get a perspective of your day-to-day/ monthly living costs in Thailand vs UK, and the benefits of geo-arbitrage. It would also be good to see more of your new life for the next 12 months in Chiang Mai, ie a deep dive into Chaing Mai, what there is to do (sites etc). All the best 👍

Love the DIY, and I really enjoyed how you shared both travel content and costs in this video. I also liked your use of google earth to help me keep up with your itinerary. We traveled as a family to Puerto Rico for two weeks in June. We rented a car (not good options for public transport outside of San Juan) and we saw so much of the island. We stayed in Airbnb's, and we used google maps A LOT to help orient us on each section of the island with things to do and places to eat nearby. We discovered so much and had really unique experiences, so I agree DIY is more exciting. Cost-wise, our two-week DIY vacation would have been the same as one week in a resort. Our way, we saw so much more, and we were able to afford to do more activities (we wanted eco-adventures) because we weren't paying resort prices. On a separate note, I have been to Thailand before but I learned of new places that I would like to visit in this video. Thank you - I REALLY liked the style of this video.

Definitely DIY, been doing Thailand since 2005, already booked to go Xmas Eve back 1st February, starting in Phuket it really does have everything you could want on one island , beaches, nightlife , town life . We do Patong, then Kamala, Kata, Phuket town. Then fly to Trat and 8 days on Koh Chang , flight upto Chang Mai 4 days there then finish off in Bangkok for four days . Total 38 days accommodation in 8 different hotel all of them very nice for £2000, plus flight of course but all in all excellent value 👍

My husband and I LOVE ... LOVE... DIY traveling because it's catered to our preferences and we can pivot whenever we want! I have a question for Sarah. Sarah, I noticed your change of attire. Since you're now in a hot, humid climate, did you buy more clothes to help you "survive" the weather conditions? If so, how are the prices (not prices in tourist areas)? Based on the vlogs I've watched and talking to friends, Asian countries do not accommodate a large variety of clothing sizes. My husband is concerned and believes he'll never find an "American" XL over there. Should we start shopping NOW or just wait and see? BTW: I love the info about your expenses. :) Thank you!

Each to their own. We've done both types. It all boils down to personal preference. And how much time is available. Do I want to schlep my cases on ferries and buses? Perhaps not. Do I want to take just one carry on on a 15 day trip? Not for me, but many others do. As I'm still working , vacation time is very precious, and I certainly don't want to play russian roulette with it. For a short 4 -7 day trip, a resort takes away all that guess/risk work. And if I never leave the resort, well that's my choice too Nobody is stopping me from going out and exploring the "real" Mexico/Thailand/wherever.

Now then - That "cattle truck" Neil, is called a "Song Touw" which meaning '2 bench'. It's the everyday mode of transport for many Thai people in towns and cities. Discos are so 1970's ha ha ha . . . Phuket is Thailand's largest island. I'm so pleased you didn't spend too much time in more "Commercial parts of Phuket!" The motorbike is a great idea when you want to get around, as long as you are sensible. I didn't tell my girlfriend that I'd got no motorbike experience and took it slowly - no one died. Those automatic bikes are great. DIY holidays are more fun and more flexible. I have DIY Travelled the length of Vietnam, Cambodia, China and Thailand. I do enjoy the planning . . . Best wishes from Bangkok.

I'm a year late but this is super similar to what we did in 2010. I live to do this every time over the Cancun resort trip. But we recently did Mexican all inclusive because it's close to NJ, USA and with small kids it was easier to feed them at the slightest drop of a meltdown..yes Thailand was 18 days for us as well.

Fantastic video in every way. Congratulations! I prefer the DIY vacations, for sure. Though during the raising young children part of life and being constantly completely exhausted, I found all-inclusives to be the best way to go. Both have their appeal. Really terrific job with this production.

What an amazing video!!! I have been in a all inclusive resort in Mexico 12 times and I can't compare to the experience I had in Thailand. All the temples, different foods made Thailand so special to me. Thanks for sharing the name of the hotels. When ( time of the year) did you guys travel to that part of Thailand?

It’s a shame you missed having a crazy night in Patong, I would recommend if you fancy another getaway for New Year’s Eve it is unbelievable on Patong beach that night, all the cruise liners come in because they know there is a massive fireworks display across the bay and all the lanterns go up aswell it’s an incredible nights entertainment, and best of all it’s FREE when was the last time you get in anywhere for free on NYE in the UK , just grab a bottle of wine from the 7/11 👍

Wow great video guys! So many amazing locations. We’ve been to Phuket as it’s an easy location from Australia but I’ve now added a few other locations that we’d never heard of. Do you know what the rules are for Aussies in regards to the bike hire? Is an international drivers licence enough or do you need an international motor bike licence? I recall you doing a learn to ride course, did that give you an actual riders licence?

Love your four new little friends, we write and see you from El Cid at Mazatlan Mexico, and love your videos and attitude towards life 👍🏼👍🏼 If you ever return to Mexico there is a place you can reserve. A very relaxing tree bedroom right in front a golf course. Very nice climate during our winter December and January. It is a nice place to spend time with family and friends, and we are dog friendly. We are an early retire couple and want to rent our house in the future. Cheers 🍻 and congratulations!

That looks like a fantastic vacation! My husband, son, and I are coming to Paris next spring. We had enough frequent flyer miles to cover the plane ride and we've booked 7 nights at an Air B&B. I think this has helped with expenses tremendously. We plan to use public transportation to get around as much as possible. Of course, we realize Paris is very expensive but we've never been and are looking forward to it while trying to keep the budget in check as much as possible. Any advice?

Hi Mel. That's great! I am a French professor and take students regularly to Paris. My suggestion is that you look at each day and group activities that are close by to one another - so you don't waste time zig-zagging all over the city (which is stressful). When our family of three travels to Paris (and other places), we generally find a rhythm of one main activity before lunch, one main activity after lunch (then a break for a snack and to get off of our feet a bit and regroup), then maybe one area to enjoy in the evening and have dinner. That's a pace we can maintain for a week. Paris has so many lovely cafes, parks, and boulangeries, that stopping to "break and keep it fun" is easy. I also suggest that each of you pick out your "must see/do's". In 7 days you can see and do a lot in Paris but not everything. You will still need to make choices. I am not sure how old your son is, but both for children and teens, there is a ton to enjoy. Depending on your son's age, one piece of advice I give (and use with my students) is we always take the stairs at the Eiffel Tower. You can go to platforms one and two via this strategy. It makes it more exciting, and really platform two has the best views (the third and highest level is so high you loose the fun details on the ground). Also, the line is a lot shorter for the stairs and costs less than taking the elevator. Also, I would recommend getting a one week transportantion pass (you will need to supply a passport size photo) and a one week museum pass. I always purchase those two when I take the university students over for a week. Hope those insights can help you! Barbara

@@mmeb7250 Thanks so much Barbara! These are wonderful suggestions. Our son is an adult so we don't have to take it easy on him! : ) I will definitely plan to play the "zone defense" per your suggestion. That's a great idea. That's sort of what we did when we went to Rome a few years ago. We did buy tickets for the Hop on, Hop off bus there and felt it was very convenient and worth the money. I was considering doing this in Paris as well. We would like to go to Versailles and I'm also willing to spend the money for a guided tour where they pick you up and organize the whole thing. I like the idea of getting the transportation pass and museum pass as well as taking the stairs at the Eiffel Tower. Good tip!

@@melhenline8438 The Museum Pass includes Versailles, and the transportation pass includes the RER C train out there. I am not against a tour but I only do Versailles on my own so I will share my strategy for a great day at Versailles. Also, note that every attraction in Paris normally has a day(s) when it is closed. For Versailles, it is closed on Mondays. I would AVOID the weekends - way too many people. I am also not sure if since the pandemic, if you have to make a reservation for a specific entry time to the palace. I would suggest you check on that. OK - great day at Versailles: 1.) pick up a nice sandwich at a boulangerie and/or picnic supplies at a little grocery before you head out for the day 2.) take the RER C train to Versailles (it is the last stop) and follow the herd of people out of the station to the right to the main street (and a bit later left = a five minute walk) to the Palace of Versailles - note that the public toilettes and info. center are to the LEFT of the main gates 3.) GO FIRST to the gardens and then enjoy your picnic lunch in those amazing gardens - you can also enjoy the intimate Trianon palaces at the back of the gardens (also the little hamlet Marie Antoinette made at the back is magical and always a favorite with my students) 4.) The main palace is open until 5:30pm so I would go around 3:30/4pm so the lines for security are almost none by then (when the tour buses have already left). You have 1.5-2 hours to still tour the palace (and while still crowded, MUCH less people then earlier in the day. Lastly, enjoy the movie "A Little Chaos" with Kate Winslet before you go - gives the story (a bit added of course) of the building of the gardens and it is magical.

We DEFINITELY prefer DIY to all-inclusive resort. Even when we do an apples to apples comparison of one destination (the way you have with an all-inclusive, you still cannot help but seeing more because you’re not “held captive” in a resort! Great videos. :)

Only drawback and negative is all the tourists. Definitely the all inclusive, compound like resorts mean you don't see the real country you are visiting. You could be anywhere in the world.
