There is a plug-in called Penteo, which actually does a pretty good job turning stereo files into Dolby Atmos…

Can you use your external analog hardware (mono/stereo compressors, eqs, limiter) to process individual tracks (1st step) and then use these processed tracks to mix and master in Dolby Atmos in the digital domain ITB (2nd step)?

Yes you can use analogue equipment prior to the Dolby Atmos summing

Let me know this is possible .. abit of concern for me is Keeping the Binary stereo width possible to have an atmos mix (without using expensive headphones ) is that even possible? Cause that’s my only concern because I would love to have that 3D feel without someone having to pay for a special headphones. Cause right now I’m really doing that for social media examples as it will all be compressed on Instagram and Facebook.

Yes so basically if I mix in Dolby Atmos and fold that mix down to a binaural stereo mix. You will be able to listen and play that back as normal using normal stereo speakers. But with the added benefit of having the 3d space created while mixing in atmos but in the stereo mix.

I've considered the idea of transforming my songs into Dolby Atmos. It seems that a standard file conversion won't suffice for this process. basically i need my original stems, already mastered, to provide to a Dolby Atmos engineer for the conversion into Dolby Atmos audio?

The stems do not need to be processed. The delivery of stems is exactly the same as you would deliver for stereo stem mastering. Playback of your stems must playback the finished stereo mix when summed together. Using the stems we can reference to the stereo master to achieve an almost identical Dolby Atmos Master with the added benefit of each stem being positioned into atmos creating more depth, clarity and separation of sound.

So you need to mix the stems (individual tracks) before you mix for Amos? Atmos mixing is basically putting your processed stems in a 3D space, or am I wrong?

Atmos mastering is positioning your processed stems into a 3d space and then adding mastering across the entire mix. Atmos mixing is the mixing of your stems in a 3d space. Adding atmos reverb, EQ, compression etc. For both atmos mixing and atmos mastering stems are required.

How «natural» is a Dolby Atmos mix? Guitars coming from the sides while the bassdrum is in the Center speaker and the cymbals from behind you? I don’t get it!

It's as natural as you want to make it. The best way to approach an atmos mix is to visualise yourself in a live space. Create a mix that sounds natural to a real world listening environment.

Depends what engineer you listen to. Most are mixing atmos badly without taking binaural stereo in mind. Which is why you are probably feeling this way

@@AudioAnimalsStudio Well... Can't it be said that Dolby Atmos "puts everything in a room" ? Is it possible to make an Atmos mix NOT impose that "in a room" sound? - In case one just wants a bone-dry sound...? Possible? How?
