Excellent advice about the pay wall. I came to the conclusion that after an aero helmet and tri bars, the rest are marginal gains which are hugely out of proportion to equipment. If you're a few seconds behind the winner, it could equally be the equipment or something out of your control (position / genetics / training etc.), but if you're several minutes behind, don't bother with a bike which costs car money.

@Gordon Chan: Recently I ran an 8.5k race all out (3:55/km). My average heart rate was 189 (zone 5) and my max heart rate was 199. I always use the Garmin HRM-Pro Plus and also mostly train by heart rate. I think these values are normal if you're really going all out. Especially at the end of a triathlon. For reference: I'm 37 years old, weighing 78 kg.

4:55 - answering the question about doing a breast stroke on a 1500m swim. ... 7 years ago when I have entered my first ever triathlon with a friend just for fun with no real training for it(it was Olympic one), we only knew breast stroke. I don't know what the cut-off time was but we have both managed to do it in about 35 minutes (the swim) and were plenty of people still behind us (there was like 400 participants and a wave start based on predicted swim times). So if your goal is just to finish the race, and have fun and being comfortable doing it, I don't see a problem.

One thing to note on the heart rate question: a lot of time when optical sensors on watches read out very high values the problem isn’t with the watch but rather how you’re wearing the watch. They rely on seeing the blood moving through the outer layers of your skin, so if your watch is too tight/too loose it can affect the reading in WILD ways. I often find that when mine is too loose my heart rate just reads out whatever my cadence is, since the watch is essentially slapping against the skin and that’s all the sensor can pick up

On the HR issue, big plus one for getting checked out for things like atrial fibrillation/tachycardia. Could be harmless but always worth checking! 33yo with the above issues here, causing my max HR to be 220ish, which has improved over time with zone 2 training etc etc and surgeries. I have a very similar issue with my HR. It is very easy for me to hit 200+ and hold that for the first 1-2 mi of a run (after strong bike) before it begins to settle. I have been diagnosed with Orthostatic Hypotension (my heart has difficulty going from a sitting to standing position). I attribute my HR jumps to that and try to lay off a bit at the start of my run. I am currently seeing a cardiologist for other family heart issues that may have been passed down though 😅

In terms of the last question, my experience is that after cycling your body is so used to an incredibly high cadence (relative to running) that you are inclined towards running at a faster cadence and therefore speed than when training alone. So the actual HR number that he references might be a bit wonky, but it's not surprising that his HR is higher than the biking and swimming portions. This happens to me all the time during brick workouts
@joergm.8932

Referring to the abnormally high heart rate question. If these values are from a heart rate strap it may help what I figured out when I made a similar experience. For a year I used a Wahoo strap and when the battery level was too low the HR jumped up to 225 (my HFmax is 175). In the early phase of batterie level drop, this is also influenced by temperature and can recover to normal values. After changing the batterie to a new one it was ok for a while. But then I got very low values of 40bpm when I was riding out of the saddle and get only rid of it by rearranging the strap. I was told that this can occur when the contact zones of the strap are influenced by sweat and the strap should be cleaned every while and then by a mild acid like vinegar. All in all, I decided to go away from HR straps and I’m using now a Polar HF10 optical Arm sensor with the best experience.

When I do a brick or a race it's kinda common for my watch to give me a HR of 10-20 BPM lower than my target for the first 10 min or so on the run before it corrects and somewhat stabilizes at a higher number

I a not far into my triathlon journey, trying to transition to front crawl. I found in a sprint distance I can more or less keep up with the slow swimmers using front crawl, but the inefficiency comes to bite and the gap widens in the 2nd half of an Olympic distance. Being at the back at the end of the swim is a pain, it makes clawing myself to the first half of the field a real challenge.

Excellent advice. I Just completed my first olympic distance Triathlon. First in my age group (60-64). I am not a strong swimmer and out of 60 entrants I was 53rd out of water. The guy swimming beside me was doing breast stroke all the way through. I was doing front crawl. So breast stroke can be done, only slower. Note: I only really started swimming front crawl proper in October of last year. I will improve for next one. Bike and run are where I shine the best. Cheers

BJJ, wrestling, and even to an extent, MTB are very different from running cardio. I wear my HR strap for rolling to help track overall training load but it has also been insightful on the type of training stress. The closest equivalent is track intervals or cyclocross. I'd also question your pacing as BJJ doesn't exactly encourage a 'relaxed' pace unless you are an upper belt. Does every run feel like a white belt roll?😅 My resting HR 50, max HR running 196, avg BJJ HR 175 and regularly touching max.

I think the heart rate question is a measuring artefact. My garmin (chest strap) would regularly give me 206bpm when downhill mtn biking, and although the adrenaline was high i was quite calm and composed, max i could ever achieve through pedalling tests and effort was 196bpm.

Hello! After completing my first iron distance two weeks ago (thanks for all the advice), my goal was to set a personal best in a major marathon in September. The issue is a half-distance and an Olympic triathlon close to my city (without much logistical hassle) two weeks prior. It's worth mentioning that in the two to three weeks leading up to the full triathlon, my brick training sessions involved cycling over 120km and running around 21km. What do you think I should do? Is it too ambitious to run the half and then the marathon two weeks later or should I just run the Olympic triathlon and focus on the marathon? #gtncoachescorner

I've just started to learn front crawl taking adult swimming lessons. Its a challenge, but without the space of a quieter pool in lessons I think it's even harder to get there (especially if like me you've been swimming breaststroke for ever). My breaststroke is pretty fast, but I'd guess it's significantly more tiring than even a half-decent front crawl.
@gtn
@gtn Жыл бұрын
Great that you've started to learn front crawl! It creates much less resistance than breaststroke so yes, front crawl will get you much further with less effort. Practice makes perfect and we have plenty of videos on front crawl if you want some extra tuition in between lessons 😉👉 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aLd8mJqcl53Vf6c.html

I swim both strokes. Neither really well but just yesterday I was out at the lake and I swam a 2:11 100 breaststroke and a 1:48 100 freestyle/front crawl. If you can really dial in the timing of your freestyle stroke then it is the better way but if you’re are not dialed in on timing you will find yourself more tired then swimming breaststroke. I have a race coming up in about a month and I plan on swimming as much freestyle as I can but I know I can fall back on my breaststroke if needed.

Hi Graeme, I too have recently learned to swim crawl to improve my chances of finishing a sprint tri. I swim 100m in 4:30 breaststroke and can go on for a couple of hours, my goal with crawl was to halve my time. So I can finish in the time limit. While I am not there yet, yesterday I swam 1.3klm with an average speed of 2:18, okay it was in a pool and I stopped 3 times, but it doesn’t look like it was out of the question, I hope this is encouraging. I am 59 at the weekend and 85kgs. (Also have to learn to run in this same period so a lot on.). Good luck 👍

#gtncoachescorner I am new to triathlon only a year in the books and only done 2 sprints. I have the weymouth half in September and I got myself a tri bike. I am struggling to get nutrition in in particular fluids. I have a hydration mount that holds 750ml but I’m not confident with bike handling to take one hand off for a period of time to drink from this or reach for a bottle. Should I instead invest in a camel pack I can wear that will give me easier access to fluids and minimal time of taking a hand off my handle bars?

#gtncoachescorner I always wonder this: Doing a brick session with Bike intervals + run off the bike. at the end of a the intervals, Zwift gives me a few minutes of cooldown, then I get off the bike and run. To simulate a tri, shouldn’t I skip the cooldown at the end of the bike workout and go from intervals straight to the run?

Hello! Question for #gtncoachescorner I experienced my first crash on the TT bike during a training ride this weekend. Luckily I walked away with just a few stitches, scrapes and bruises despite a pretty hard fall at high speed. I simply came across a slick spot while going straight and the bike just came out from under me, and the next few minutes are a blur. I guess my question is…is this simply part of cycling/training, or do I need to improve my bike handling skills? Or both? I’m beating myself up, but I ultimately don’t know what I could have done differently outside of lowering my tire pressure slightly. Do you have any advice or similar experiences to share? Thanks for the great content!

#gtncoachescorner - I work 12hr shifts with a random selection of days & nights over a 5x week period. Consistency is always a major part of training but this is very difficult with my shift pattern (especially as my body-clock can switch after working 3 or 4 nights in a row). Should I stick to all short sessions which I can complete at lunchtimes, and then all longer sessions on my days off? And should I train the same way over my 5x week pattern? I'm 54 and have thought of retiring early so that I can train/compete properly!!

Hi GTN! Hope you’re all doing well. I have a question about combining trail/ultra running and triathlon. I would like to train for an Ironman and an Ultramarathon (around 55k) in the same (next) season. Not sure how far the races are apart yet, but I would incorporate enough recovery time in between of course. Do you think combining these two events in training is possible? If so, how could I go about doing so? Cheers! #gtncoachescorner

#gtncoachescorner Hi GTN, swimming is my weakest discipline so I've been going to the pool for the last two years. I got better but not as much as expected, 1:55 to 2:05 Min/100 m for a typical Olympic triathlon. Anyway I have started using the pull buoy but unlike the pads, it doesn't seem to do anything for me. For the same effort I get the same speed with the buoy, I don't feel anything different. My kick is just for stabilization anyway, unless I do some intervals. Is this some kind of magic device that makes me a better swimmer without me realizing it? Am I doing it wrong? Thanks 😊

#gtncoachescorner hello, I've been running 5km at zone 3-4 every day for 1 year, but I couldn't make much progress, I finish in 22 minutes. I did some uphill runs. but still the same. I've been running 10km for 5 days now. I start slow, after 30 minutes my legs are overheated, and the remaining 15 minutes I run faster, with wider strides, without discomfort. I'm done in 45 minutes. Do you think I should go up to the half marathon by slowly increasing the distance? i'm 183cm 71kg

You probably aren't making as much progress as you'd like due to the lack of variety in your workouts. It's a good idea to incorporate different distances/speeds/zones and likely go a bit longer than the half distance if that's your goal race.

Does a chest strap give you higher or lower heart rate than a watch ? Thanks
@domcarter62
@domcarter62 Жыл бұрын
Neither. It gives more accurate readings. They detect electrical activity from the heart which is far more accurate than the optical sensors which use light to detect expansion of arteries, as these readings can be affected by watch fit and light leakage and movement.
@inz_uzi

I'd had a lot of problems with the basic Garmin chest straps accuracy. The heart rate reading jumped from let's say 150 to 220 BPM for a few seconds or minutes and then back to normal values. The reason was electrostatic charges created by synthetic t-shirt or jersey rubbing on the strap. I had to put a plaster made from fabric on the strap near the electrodes to make it work. The latest Garmin models - HRM Tri etc. - work without any problems.
@MattSwain1

The other option for people who don’t want to wear a chest strap is an upper arm optical sensor like Polar and others sell. I’ve trained using just a watch, using a chest strap and now I wear my Polar upper arm band. I found the watch to be erratic (even on steady state runs), the chest strap was better (although that could lock on to my cadence rather than my heart beat so they’re not infallible as some people will tell you they are) and now the upper arm band (for me) is the best of them all, not getting fooled by my foot steps and giving believable, repeatable results
@joergm.8932

@@MattSwain1 I can confirm. I changed to a Polar HF10 and wear it on the upper arm. Since then - no problems and comparable accuracy to the chest straps.

For the last guy: it's also worth investing a few extra bucks buying a few spare chest straps because those with time might start "misfiring" and giving you weird HR readings. It's an accurate way to measure your heart rate, but far from infallible. I had no idea the straps could malfunction but they do. Just make sure you get ones that are compatible to the specific HR monitor you're using.
