I've watched the World Juniors for 20 years and I've never seen a team play with more cockiness and lack of fundamentals than Canada played tonight. The first two periods especially were just a string of missed assignments, bad penalties, cute nonsense, and even a little bit of bad goaltending, although the result was not primarily Gaudreau's fault. But contrast, the Czechs were fundamentally sound. They got in shooting lanes, they got pucks on net, they gave up a few nice chances, but their goalie was very strong tonight and didn't allow the Canadians easy looks on net. The talent on the Canadian team is incredible, but I think they believed this tournament is going to be easy. They really found out it's not.

I think that pulling two Michigans in 1st sums up arrogance, underestimation and direspect to your oponent. I am not Czech but it reminded me when Canada was winning over Slovakia two years back I think at WJC just 2:1, but Canadian stars were pulling tricks like it is exibition game and they dont even care. This loss is wake up call to that mentality of "we are unbeatable". You can be unbeatable if you are a team no individualistic mess with "big names"

I don't agree that attempting a michigan implies arrogance and disrespect. If that goalie was a little off the post there it would have been a goal. Trying a michigan is as standard as taking a shot on goal AS LONG AS you get to the point of putting the puck on net

In my view the "Michigan" should be banned as it isn't a legitimate hockey goal. Never before the recent past was a goal like that attempted, let alone made. While I admire the skill it takes to do it, scooping a puck up with your stick and basically carrying it to a spot on the net advantageous to you isn't a real goal. I know younger players and youth players love it, but it is a goal disrespectful to the way it's been done for over a hundred years. Ban It. Please. What does the NHL do or say when a long held scoring record is challenged by a player that scored maybe 25% of his or her goals using the Michigan? And the current record holder didn't use that method? That would diminish the integrity of the record in question in my view. BAN IT.

@@GettingHyphy Canada has tried it almost 10 times in pre-tournament and tournament play. Almost all attempts result in the puck going to Canada’s end and the opposition getting a chance on goal. The czeck goalie and players were ready and stopped it. Canada would have been way better off cycling the puck around or jamming the puck down low. It’s a very low percentage shot with most goalies wise to the attempt.

5 minute major was absolutely the right call per the IIHF rule book. IIHF rules don’t say anything about the head needing to be the primary or secondary point of contact, just that the offending player has to extend any part of their upper body to make contact with the head or neck of their opponent, which Dean did.

Exactly. Hoglander did the same hit in the Juniors world and got the same penalty. Hoglander is small but pushed up towards the head and the Russian embellished a lot, as many eastern European players tend to do. Checks are notorious for diving and embellishment.

@@xcvbxcvb2179 what the fuck? We aren’t known for diving… as a matter of fact Canadians are! Our players do not dive as often. Not to mention that Canada is the team which gets help from refs the most.. for example 2015 World championship. Clear Puck covered in hand pass leads to a goal. It’s allowed. We score a goal which should be allowed cause there was no violation and it was disallowed. Those two changed the game cause the game ended 2:0 for Canada…

The Check's always have a good, disciplined team and they played the perfect road game and remember, they had nothing to lose because they are far from home and no one expected them to win. Us Frenchies aren't much better. Every year the same moron of an analyst says the same thing : ''Canada could make two teams and win both Gold and Silver''. And once every 2 years or so the same moron makes excuses about how we ''got unlucky'' when we lose to a country with the same population as Alberta (most notably Finland). These people are stuck in 1985 when 90% of the NHL players were Canadian. They aren't anymore. Our numbers have shrunk to roughly 1/3 of the league, with another 1/3 being Americans and 1/3 Europeans. Within 5-10 years Americans will outnumber us. And it shows in the World Juniors ! Our rosters aren't as deep as they used to be, and foreign rosters aren't as thin as they used to be. We aren't the clear favorites we used to be. Our media needs to wake the f up because the way they see international hockey is terribly inappropriate for the current trends.

Sometimes, when you gather the best and hype them up as the best, they let it go to their heads. Obviously from the way they played, Canada's players bought into the hype and thought they would coast through the tourney only to get smashed in the face right away. So we'll see how they respond to the ego check.

So, on a stage where the entire nation is watching them, you don't think they were trying to win? Gone to their heads? Are you insane? Gotta say I think the major was correct. Not sure why you say the head was not the primary or the secondary point of contact. He def made contact with the head and as someone mentioned below, according to IIHF it does not necessarily have to be the primary point of contact. The Canadian player doesn't win the play because he is the "stronger player", he wins it because all the force is directed towards the upper body/head of the Czech player. His hands and stick belongs nowhere near the head of the Czech player to begin with. That being said I think Canada might be lucky to actually get this game out of the way early and get a necessary wake-up call. Teams like Czechia and Slovakia are better this year than previous, but as long as the coaching staff is anywhere near decent for Canada, they won't have a game like this again. They're still the favourites in my book but I hope my Sweden can upset :)

Agree with you on the check. The Tough Call channel had good angles on the hit and you can see him launch upward into the head. His hands up kind of prevented it from being more violent, but it was still intentional. No reason to launch up, not sure why he would do that.

Oh but regarding the hit to the head, I don't know how you say it doesn't reflect the IIHF rulebook. They don't get too focused on "principal point of contact." There's a brief passage early in the rule about: "A hit resulting in contact with an opponent’s head where the head was the main point of contact and such contact to the head was avoidable is not permitted." But later, it opens it up to even more scenarios such as: "A penalty for illegal checking to the head or neck will be assessed if one of the following occurs when a player checks an opponent: (I) A Player who directs a hit of any sort, with any part of their body or equipment, to the head or neck of an opposing Player or drives or forces the head of an opposing Player into the protective glass or boards using any part of their upper body. (II) A Player who extends and directs any part of their upper body to contact the head or neck of an opponent. (III) A Player who extends their body upward or outward in order to reach their opponent or uses any part of the upper body to contact an opponent’s head or neck. (IV) A Player who jumps (leaves their skates) to deliver a blow to the head or neck of an opponent" In that hit, I'd say I, II, III, and IV all happened there. You did a great job freezeframing both his skates leaving the ice. And the general motion of his hit, he glided in hunched down low, before quickly raising upwards to deliver the hit. But you also took the most flattering angle for this hit in an effort to intentionally obscure the head contact. There's a different one out there where you can see Dean's right shoulder absolutely making contact with the guy's head. Yeah, it was absolutely the right call, lol

Yeah, they end up 4th last tournament and this is hopefully just start for better future. Czechia just hunting their comeback into ice hockey map in compare to Canada who just dominate. So, I believe that's the biggest different here. Different motivation. Anyway, first match of tournament usually does not matter much but will see. Greeting from Czechia! Loves your video's

Anytime there's a risk of that happening the hitter is responsible for trying to keep his hit and stick as low as possible to avoid contact with the head when there is a significant chance of incidental contact. That's just how they call it in the IIHF, it's a valid strategy to try to avoid as many head hits as possible

These are young (not fully mature ) men, who abandoned team play and tried to win the game back through their individual efforts after falling behind. I think the Canadian coach should have taken a time out after the second goal to calm his guys down and re-instill the need for "team" oriented play. I also concur with a previous comment about the lack of respect and arrogance shown toward the opponent by trying the " Michigan" goal shots. That type of "hotdogging" fits better when you are well ahead in the score, or in exhibition games!

Honestly this is a good wake up call, I’ve seen this with Canada in the past, they are by far the best on paper, with the best forwards, defence, etc. you could ask for, but they aren’t the best _team._ Hopefully this will really show to a lot of Canadian players, yes you do have the potential to be the best Canadian World Junior team to ever exist, but hockey is almost never a walk in the park, you can’t just win automatically. Better they learn this lesson now than in elimination games.
