Companies will say they had to increase their prices because of inflation, but A) their prices increased far above and beyond their increase in costs (triple or more) and B) their record profits show that this was not actually the reason for increasing prices.
@eudofia3 ай бұрын
The funny thing is that increasing prices is the root cause of inflation. So, when a company increases prices, they are actually contributing to the rise of inflation. And then the same companies will increase prices again blaming the inflation they caused. And the cycle continues.

Does anyone remember when the shift from Daylight Savings to Standard time was pushed a week later in 2007? That was because the candy companies lobbied for it, so there would be an extra hour of trick-or-treating time, so they could sell an hour's worth of extra candy. No kidding. Candy companies have the wherewithal in the US to change how we mark time. Think about that for a minute.
@techcafe03 ай бұрын

Then when I moved and did not get an appt for them the dentist in another city I took my two oldest and when they were done I asked about my son's cavities and another appt. The nurse checked with the dentist and confirmed that there were no cavities. Then when my youngest was told he had three cavities ( years later as a young adult) he called me and asked if I was still going to Mexico to have my dental work done. He was able to get an appt and we went together and were both exrayed ( with more modern and much better equipment in a very nice facility) And that dentist told him his pain was due to him grinding his teeth in his sleep and made him a bite plate to wear. He had no cavities. I had a crown made in Mexico which is far better than and has worn better than the last one I had made in the states after I moved too far to go to Mexico. Think about it. It is like your cars if you are not familiar with an engine. Dentists can tell you anything and you will never be sure that it is the truth. After I shared these stories with others in Arizona when I lived there I heard others who had similar ones there. Oh, and I also met three seniors who had gotten root canals and ended up with Heart issues here in the US. so be very careful.

FYI: Cocoa prices in the futures market recently reached an all-time high due to weather affecting crops in The Ivory Coast and Ghana (West Africa, where a majority of the cocoa companies like Mars and Hershey's get their cacao pods from). Communities are so heavily dependent on it that children as young as 5 forego school to go into jungles with a machete to harvest those cacao pods. They are also known to drink water from local ponds that they walk miles to and from every day that is infected with diseases, so no, they are certainly not reaping the benefits of these high prices. The richest family in NJ are the descendants of Mars -- so, no, they didn't work for their money, they inherited it. Mars was warned of these kids in West Africa whom they profit off of years ago, yet they have done nothing about it. Furthermore, these prices do not reflect the actual demand for chocolate... Mars and Hershey's manufacture it and it winds up on shelves everywhere. Yet everyday tons of bags of chocolate products go straight in the trash, because they overproduce regardless of actual demand. Just as bad are all the restaurants whom offer the same boring options for dessert on their menu -- That plain "NY" cheesecake (that's been sitting in their fridge for God knows how long), and: Chocolate cake with chocolate frosting and chocolate chips with chocolate syrup on top. Smh.

I've been giving out change/coins at Halloween. The same or lower cost of the bad candy, the kiddo's parents are usually happier, the kiddos can start a small piggy bank, and they don't have as much junk around.

I don't normally eat candy bars, but a few weeks back I suddenly had a craving for a Snicker bar. Stopped into a gas station and grabbed the smaller normal size bar (which is getting smaller and smaller) went to the check out counter. Guy says $2.50. Asked him to check that he was ringing up the right item, which he was, and I promptly handed him the candy bar back. Craving went away real fast.

And the moral of this story is 'quit eating sugar'.

These candy companies have also reduced the size of or amount for what you get. It was difficult going through sugar withdrawal, but I did it, and my body and financial budget loved me for it. Owners of these wealthy corporations, how much more money do you need to fill your empty souls?

I feel fortunate that the increased prices of food, etc. has not hurt me as much as many people in this country. But when I shop for groceries, I no longer have the urge to buy some candy, snack food, ice cream, breakfast food or bottled drinks. When I see prices starting at $4 for any of those items (especially when the quality of those items has been degraded) I walk away. Those manufacturers can keep their products and I am healthier as a result. Thank you Mars, Hershey, Pepsi, Coke and the rest of you scammers.

VIDEO UPDATE: Due to rising prices from the two candy companies, the free market has responded (kinda). Another big player, Wal-Mart, has introduced generic versions that resemble Snickers, Kit-Kat, and Twix. These candy bars are currently selling for 2/3rds of the other name brands. (There are also made and distributed from TURKEY which makes me wonder about the slave wages offered, but that's another topic.) Secondly, I've recently heard that due to bad weather, there is a shortage of cocoa that is used to make chocolate, so expect prices to rise on chocolate (again)...

I would normally agree with Mr. Reich but when it comes to junk food, I have no issues with absurdly high prices. Hopefully it will disuade people from eating so much of it 🍭🍬🍫🍩🍭

That's why I support (when I purchase) Brach's, Russell Stover and smaller companies. Fortunately, I don't have much of a sweet tooth (and naturally, I have very excellent teeth as a result). So. . . when I DO purchase such as for the big holidays, such as for Valentine's Day, Easter, Christmas, Ground Hog Day and Millard Fillmore's Birthday . . . the sweets go as gifts to others and resort to avoiding any of the "big names" as it just embeds their monopoly more. Chocolate has gone up logarithmically and I refuse to buy it. Personally, my choices in taste are "salt over sugar." Rather have high blood pressure than a mouth of rotted teeth . . . so there!

If it is supply and demand - just adjust accordingly - that requires one to do a budget though, and adhere to it

It's the same in the grocery store business. Four companies own 65% of all supermarkets.

I noticed Walmart has created a line of generic candy bars that are significantly cheaper (~$1.50 vs $2.50 for a king and $0.78 vs $1.50 for a standard).

The price increases have far outpaced my income increases. Fortunately, my sweet-tooth is fairly tame. I moved more toward baked sweets, but I quit smoking 6 months ago so hard candy has become a 'comfort food' for me. I have noticed that Hershey's pricing is somewhat strategic in one area. I have been buying Life Savers (Mars, Inc.) for a while and decided to try Jolly Rancher (Hersheys) for a change. in a 5 flavor bag of about 150 candies per bag, I got 8 cherry flavor pieces. I noticed that Hershey's Jolly Rancher brand sells a Red Favorites (?) bag at 4 times the price of the 5 flavor. I will never buy Jolly Rancher's again. Making a 'false shortage' is just such a 'douche bag' move.

What about Nestle's? That's another huge chocolate candy conglomerate that has violated many environmental laws among other things.
@RiverRat_19773 ай бұрын
@jimrankin7334, on the topic of environmentally destructive industries, Nestle has recently gone into meat… raising cattle and slaughtering them!! Finding that out destroyed my childhood image of their silly animated cartoon chocolate ads!! The beef, dairy, poultry, and pork industries have become completely inhumane and more environmentally destructive than all fossil fuel burning sources of transportation combined… Plus meat has become one of the largest sources of antibiotic immunity and cancer causing chemicals since cigarette smoking. And that’s why I’ve become 100% vegan!! No meat, milk, cheese, eggs, and chocolate (it’s made with milk). I’ve lost almost 25 pounds and my blood pressure has never been lower… I can make my own milk with cheap cashew bits, plus there’s tons of high protein alternatives that are made sustainably!! I’ve never felt better, and plan to live an extra 10 to 15 years (I’m 65). Also, my conscience is much cleaner and reformed knowing I’ve eliminated as many corporate monopolized businesses from my life as humanly possible. A quick internet search reveals who really owns the brands of items I buy and how committed they are to maintaining and restoring the environment plus making sure their employees are thriving all the way around!! Now I’m working on reaching my goal of not supporting any corporate entities 100% by only buying from local family owned businesses… I’ve also replaced sweets with fruit. I get the same sugar fix along with lots of natural fiber!!

One of my favorites is Goo Goo Clusters made in Nashville TN, I'm in California now...one Goo Goo cost $2.50. Of course, I think a regular Snickers is at least a $1.50. I usually indulge in chocolate when it's on clearance...then hope I don't overdose

No problem. Don't buy candy or at least minimize it. Also, while a 10% hike in prices since 2022 seems steep, it doesn't seem all that high compared to how much everything else rose - if anything it is on the low side.
