In the early eighties, I met and married my high school sweetheart. His mom was the first and only person I knew who made homemade donuts from canned biscuits, topping hers with a Jiffy mix chocolate icing. She told me that she learned to make them from the cook at a local diner she worked at as a teenager. My mom was a wonderful cook too, but she had never heard of anyone doing the donuts that way either. Needless to say, in the months leading up to our wedding my mom in law helped me gain about 10 pounds. She made the chocolate iced donuts, a to die for peanut butter fudge that I have never tasted the likes of before or since, and popped popcorn on her stovetop that tasted better than movie theater popcorn. My parents, in laws, and husband are no longer with me, but this video brought back memories. I'm going to have to make these donuts for my granddaughter. Thank you for the video how to.

Aww. I’m so sorry that you’ve watched so many of your loved ones pass on. That’s beautiful but sad. You were there for them and I’m sure they were grateful for your love. I’m happy that this video brought back happy memories for you! I just turned 50 and lost my dad 15 years ago extremely unexpectedly due to a virus in his heart. I hope that I can start to make these recipes to make myself happy since I don’t have happy memories from my life. Have a great day. Be safe and smile. 😊

Yes. Good memories. My mother & I made these back in the 1970s & my father would take 6 of them to work in his lunch bucket. I'm almost 64 now. A 4-pack case of biscuits with 10 biscuits in each case just cost about 79 cents...40 biscuits for just that much which made 40 donuts plus 40 donut holes!

My Mom used to do this when we were growing up, but of course she used the smaller biscuits that were like 10 for a $1.00 a roll back then. I still remember her drawing them on a brown paper bag, doubt we had paper towels back then, even if they existed we couldn't afford them. They were so good, brought back lots of memories. She made glazed and sugar and cinnamon and we helped her.

Great hack! I remember one from my childhood as well. Take Jiffy cake mix and add a little more flour to achieve a dough consistency. Roll into balls or use a small ice cream scooper. Fry, then roll in either powdered sugar or cinnamon/sugar mixture. Next, turn on the t.v. for some Saturday morning cartoons. Oh, and some Nestle Quick chocolate milk too. Enjoy.

My grandma made these for the grandkids when we stayed over on the weekends. She made like three different icing toppings for them. Chocolate (she kept a canister of cocoa in her cabinet), cinnamon and brown sugar and a vanilla one. She’d put sprinkles on some of the vanilla ones. Sometimes she’d use store biscuit dough and most of the time she made them from scratch. Only time we had store bought donuts or cakes was birthdays. Granny could do it all! Since there were so many grandkids she’d mostly make donut holes to stretch the dough. 😊

Tips and advice: The NON flaky (no layers) biscuits work best! The cheapest (4-packs) do just fine. My glaze was either milk and powdered sugar (sometimes added cinnamon) or lemon/orange juice with powdered sugar. I use to inject a little jelly into the donut holes. I never twisted them because I preferred the dough be fully cooked. Even if I didn’t make “holes”, I put a small hole in the middle just to be sure it cooked thoroughly.

fresh dough works much better. As simple as a 2:1 ratio of Self Rising flour and Plain Yogurt, IE 2 cups the flour, 1 cup the yogurt. Its good as just that, but you can edit the dough from there- add a bit of sugar and vanilla to make them sweeter, add a bit of cinnamon or chocolate (I like to use Nesquick). This makes a very wet dough, best to put in a bag, cut off the corner and use a pair of scissors to snip little dollops as you squeeze it out into the oil for donut holes. If you add a bit more flour and chill it, it could be a bit more firm for you to kneed and roll out and make shapes and traditional donuts and such. Tips for topping- If you're going to glaze or roll in sugar or cinnamon sugar, do while they are still a little hot and oily. If you're going to dip them into a thicker icing or roll in powdered sugar, let them cool off a bit first. I haven't thought to try a lemon glaze, but now I think I will, thank you.

Thank you. I’m about to fry donuts for a church fair and while I know how to make a yeast donut, grappling with rising times…mixing…cutting out and everything while guarding my oil from little children had me nervous. With this, I could just have a small cooler of my “whomp” biscuits and fry as needed rather than have my massive and precarious tray of yeasted donuts over riding in the sun while I wait on folks. My booth is “decorate your own donut.”

I learned how to make these years ago with the cinnamon and sugar. Haven't done it in quite some time but this video is an inspiration. I will definitely do it with the glaze, thanks.

My mother & I used to make these donuts back in the 1970s. We made them using powdered sugar as a coating...shaking up the warm donuts & donut holes in a plastic bag with the sugar...we also used powdered sugar mixed with sweetened cocoa, brown-sugar cinnamon, & even put regular frosting on them.

Awesome video, and tutorial. Growing up in the 70s and on the wrong side of track, these were the only donuts I had ever seen. I can afford whatever I want now but I still cook the recipes my mom and granny made. They are just as good and i still feel my granny next to me. I live in texas and my granny was from Southeast Kentucky.

This reminded me of my Mama stewing dried apples with sugar, water & a splash of lemon, then rolling out canned biscuits & frying apple turnovers. I really liked them cold from the fridge the next day. I think I will try these with the flaky biscuits soon. I love twists.
