One of the common things you will hear in canning is that you should put the rings on finger tight or fingertip tight. But what does fingertip tight actually mean in canning? This week I show you exactly what fingertip means by not only explaining it but by also demonstrating it multiple ways.

I did this with salsa and it seems like water got inside the jar with it, is that normal or did I do it too loose? I did water bath

@@tigerlilygraphics6877 I have never had that happen with any canned good. Salsa can become watery. You could try to tighten a little more. Was it just one jar or all jars?

@@AllAboutTheHarvest it's all the jars. I think it's what you said that it's watery/separated. I made a blended salsa so there's solids on the top and it's reddish/clear beneath it

I am new to canning, am self taught and have had such a hard time getting this right. Im on a Facebook page for safe and tested recipes and practices only so that has helped teach me, but this has been the hardest part. Ive onlt pressure canned 3 times ive had over half of my jars fail to seal until my husband and I watched this video to help explain. I just pulled 6 reprocesses out of the canner 10 minutes ago and 4 have already pinged. Thank you for this great teaching video.

Your voice is very soothing. I now know how tight I should put the rings on my jars and also feel like I just came out of a zen spa.

I just started canning have heard the vague term finger tight everywhere. To me 'finger tip tight' or 'finger tight' would be as much as I could tighten it with just my finger tips of one hand on the ring and the other on the jar (no palm grip etc.) . . . this would be far tighter than you or or most others on KZfaq have shown. When I tighten a nut or bolt finger tight it will be as tight as I can make with my fingers. You will need to grip it tightly with your fingers tips to loosen it. It will take some effort and not just a simple flick of the wrist to loosen it. In spite of what I have just said I have not tightened the ring bands as tight as I possibly could with my finger tips but I have tighter than I see you and most others demonstrate. I was even wondering if I was not tightening the ring bands enough because I knew I could have gone tighter. So the rings are pretty snug but can still be loosened with just your finger tips firmly . . . before processing. However after they are processed and cooled down for a day. At that point I can just twist them off with a flick of the wrist and some with just one finger spinning it. I figure if I tightened a ring band too tight the jar should have exploded in the pressure canner. Someone (like maybe BALL) should come up with a more specific and accurate term. I never would have known what canners mean by finger tight if I only read about it or heard anyone just say the words finger tight. I can't say that I am now not wondering if I will poison myself in a few months when I consume what I canned. LOL

As long as you don't grip the ring, you are okay. Just let the finger slide on the surface.

So basically what's meant by fingertip tight is to screw 'gently', not so tight? I am translating a bulletin for MSU Extension and I'm searching for a good interpretation of the expression.

Tried this method and every one of my jars blew like a geyser upon opening the PC. Had chicken stock all over the kitchen and ceiling. The bands simply were not tight enough and the tops blew off.. And I followed the canning directions to the letter.
