I'm really excited to have reviewed both with Canon 5D Mark III and the D800. I have been shooting with both of these camera for awhile and have been taking them both everywhere I go trying them in side by side in different lighting conditions, cloudy, mixed lighting, extreme low light, swimming pools, silhouettes, even time lapses, comparing skin tones, slow motion, landscapes, and pictures styles, and I think I have found some interesting stuff about these cameras that no one else is talking about.
I've been wanting to buy a full frame camera for awhile now and I have waiting for the Canon 5D Mark III to come out, but now that Nikon has step up their game on the video side of things, there are two cameras to consider now. Are you an amateur like me wanting to step up to a full frame? In this video comparison I will be talking about this from the amateur level This is by far my most thorough comparison I have ever done since I will be buying one of these cameras.
First off, both have pluses and minuses, they are both full frame, have dual card slots SD and CF, 100 view finder coverage, weather sealed body, both have a somewhat similar Continuous Shoot Speed, both have excellent auto focus systems, and both now have new headphone jacks.

I've been back and forth between various Nikon and Canon products over 20+ years of shooting. This "war" between their fans is insane. They're both the top two cameras (and the Panasonic GH series is coming on fast as well) that it's just splitting hairs between the two of them. I've now gone Nikon due to the glass and other features I prefer (I feel Nikon cuts better with my RED) but you can make amazing, amazing videos with both Nikon AND Canon. These two cameras are both phenomenal.

Again, it's splitting hairs... BOTH are great cameras and there's this stupid nerd war between Nikon and Canon owners. It's a matter of preference. He prefers the Canon, doesn't make it "the best." The DP of the show Wilfred prefers the D800 and won a Cinematography award for it, still doesn't make Nikon the best... it's a matter of preference.

I know exactly how you feel. Nikon and Canon are the top flagships of photography DSLRs and seeing fans argue about it is just sad. Whether you're a Nikon or Canon user, the point is cameras were made to capture the moment and Canon and Nikon do that excellent in their own ways. If theres anything photographers should argue about, at the very least, be DSLRs vs. Camera-phones.

Where Mr Dougdale shines, is in his professional and very clear manner of speaking and the way he explains things, as if he was a school teacher or a college professor. He is what I would call a 'natural teacher'. While I agree with you that he does a fantastic job overall for most listeners, where he falls short is his level (or lack of knowledge on most of the things he reviews. For a beginner who knows nothing, he is great and probably the best on KZfaq. But the way he titles his videos cleverly to get more eyeballs, he ropes in professional level viewers who are usually disappointed with his lack of in depth knowledge on almost every subject that he covers. To me, its as if he tries to bite off too much and do more reviews than he is actually qualified for and that's why I give him credit for admitting that he is on the 'amateur' level. He also tends to cover just the basics and topics that are all over the place elsewhere on KZfaq, rather than truly unique content that us professionals are after.

@n.vonada9067 10 жыл бұрын
All of those compliments that I mentioned and you call me a hater? Wow! At the end, I just fine tuned where his niche is and stated the reasons why, which is not derogatory or hateful at all. And if I start doing photography tutorials (I just might, actually) and that's one reason that I look at them with a critical eye, because I'm looking for my own niche and I think I found it, because I have uncovered Doug's weakness! Remember, everyone cannot be everything to everyone! And as I said earlier, Doug does a tremendous job and he's superior teacher--even a naturally gifted teacher--and I rarely ever have said that, because he has a rare gift. What I did notice, is that Doug tends to be in a hurry to put up too many videos, without any real substance, In fact, in some cases, he just has an attention-getting title and gorgeous video, with little worthwhile information, except to rookies , maybe. In many of his videos, he readily admits that he's an amateur and often asks for help from the viewers, on the topic that was my reason for watching in the first place. I don't want to waste all my time watching his videos just to be asked what I was wanting clarification on, in the first place. Despite all that, I enjoy watching his videos, because when he actually is knowledgeable on a topic, his explanation is exemplary. My only beef is to ask him to please limit his pumping out of new videos on topics that he knows little about, just for the sake of getting hits on KZfaq. After all, its not a secret that placing a title up there on something everyone is searching for it a way to get hits, but when the video doesn't really have any substance, it just wastes people's time who took the time to view it.

TOTALLY AGREED!! I went with the Nikon D-800E. Hoping I DON’T encounter that “green” tinge issue, maybe I should have spent another grand for the D-750. I have four GOOD AF Nikon lenses (50mm, 35-70, 70-210, 35mm micro), so, that’s why I picked the D800E, and back in the day, the Nikon F-3 HP I owned, was better than the Cannon “pro” film camera then. Maybe I made the wrong choice. IDK. If I switched, what would I do with my lenses?? IDK at the moment. This camera confounds me!! Now I feel like I’ve NEVER owned a camera before, it’s SO DIFFERENT!! SO much to learn!! Film to digital. I’m a “newbie” all over. Film I understand, and had photos published in the Atlanta Journal, but now, I have NO idea how to use this bloody camera!! 😔

Very nice, high quality comparison. Thank you! Regarding the white balance, green tint on the Nikon, using the correct ICM colour profile in my raw developer, which is RAW Therapee eliminated the issue for me. I also have my monitors calibrated. So if you struggle with subtle colour phenomena, make sure to be using the correct input colour profile. Cheers! P.S. A professional is not necessarily a person making a living out of their photography. Being a professional means having mindset, where we learn consciously, challenge ourselves to further our art. Your vid is of top quality and indeed you are a professional the way I understand it. Way to go.

It's so hard to decide when you have such great options to choose from. I also wish Canon would just freaking listen about the flip and twist screens. I switched from the 7D to the 70D and I have used that flip out screen in almost 95% of everything I have used it for. Even when I am using both cameras, I've got the screen flipped out on the 70D so I can watch it while I'm standing next to the 7D with my audio setup. As far as color is concerned, I forked out the 15 bucks or so for the Visioncolor and Visiontech profiles. I had used the Cinestyle for a while, but I much prefer the visioncolor. Far more manageable. As always, a fantastic vid. Thanks!

***** Well that may be the case, but that's the reason I bought the 70D to replace my 7D and I am no longer considering getting a higher end Canon. I have the glass necessary for a 5D mk whatever and I even have the budget for it, but without that flip screen, I'd rather pay $500-1000 for a black magic or two.

I solved the white balance issue with my d800 using lightroom preset that I created just for d800. It's really easy just 1 click to apply :) I used 5D Mark iii a lot before D800 but I noticed that my photos were mostly over satruated especially after HDR images processing. I don't like the blue, red, orange, and green color on Canon 5D mark iii. The green color on Canon 5D Mark iii is just too artificial. It looks too bluish-and-too bright. I now go back to Nikon because the Nikon can pick up colors better than 5D Mark iii can't. I'm not a video person so I have no problem with the ISO so far.

GREAT VIDEO! But since I'm in still photography I'll chose the Nikon. I really think the dynamic range is better on that one. Thank you for the effort. Great video.
@cooloox
@cooloox 9 жыл бұрын
Juan Ignacio Weber There is not a huge difference in dynamic range and I believe the more important thing is how quickly you can use the camera. Almost every video comparison I have seen puts the Canon focusing far ahead of the Nikon's in real-world shootouts. The focusing is both faster and more accurate. I'd rather have a more usable and faster camera every time I am out shooting than say "Ooh, I can see a twig in the shadows under a bush more clearly on the Nikon than on the Canon". In other words, big deal! It will be extremely rare for you to lose something "important" in the shot on the Canon which the Nikon would capture, otherwise you need to learn about lighting.
@cooloox
@cooloox 9 жыл бұрын
***** I do a lot of street photography and so grabbing focus needs to be swift , accurate and effortless. The same goes for events and even weddings & portraits where you need to nail a fleeting expression or lose it forever. Admittedly, most modern cameras have most of this covered in terms of focus speed anyway. I think you are exaggerating the dynamic range a little, although the Nikons definitely exhibit less noise in the shadows than Canons. I can honestly say I rarely, if ever, get shots where the shadows have ruined my image. The only shadows I cannot recover are in meaningless parts of the image where it makes no difference. E.g. under the bush in the background, not on the model's face. I never take portraits in such contrasty lighting that I cannot recover shadow details; I shoot from a different angle and/or reposition the model so as not to put myself in that position to begin with (assuming I don't have any lighting aids with me at the time). I would never take a portrait in such unflattering light that the shadows are extremely harsh, unless the shadows were making a shape/pattern and it looked effective. In that case the shadows would be fine as they were. One other thing - not everyone uses Lightroom. I use Capture One Pro and both the shadow and highlight recovery is superior to that in Lightroom, at least with Canon images. It can bring back a blue sky with defined clouds from what appeared to be a flat white (overexposed) sky and does great shadow recovery without introducing anywhere near the noise Lightroom does with Canon images. Basically, I do agree there is "an" advantage with Nikon's dynamic range, but certainly not a huge one and not one that allows Nikon users to take images Canon users cannot achieve.
@cooloox
@cooloox 9 жыл бұрын
***** Ok, let's look at what you're saying here. You've claimed it affects portraits, so how about you browse the internet for some pro photographer sites and post some links to the portraits which failed using Canon DSLRs. You're merely regurgitating what all the other Nikon and Sony fanboys say, so back your claims. Where are these failed images? No camera has such a useless DR that it cannot capture a quality portrait, even in uneven light. If the light is so harsh you have to push your camera to its absolute limits in recovering details in a shadow then maybe it's time you did a lighting course? As for toning down my comments because Canons are not the best cameras in dynamic range, the argument is the exact opposite. I'm saying it is still great enough to achieve high quality professional images. It is you who ASSUMES because the DR is less than that from a Sony sensor that it must be useless for anything. That is kinda like saying a 400lbs man is not heavy because there are 500lbs men out there.

With all the respect to all Canon owners, but I've had owned Canons in the past, but for some reason, that I won't discuss here and much less engage in a hot argument with Canon lovers, but when you bring the Nikon cameras into the picture here...Canons get relegated to big humongous second place . I've had owned Canons F1s, A1s, Eos1 ,all films in the 1980s and 1990s, but even given the fact, that Canon took the lead a decade ago, when digital went into full swing, Nikon slowly is coming back to where Nikon is always been since the mighty "F" of 1959...the mighty leader. Just take a look, how things are developing. Remember my two F3s, compared to the Canon F1, back in the 1980s. I remember my two F5s, compared to the Canon Eos1 in the 1990s. Now, this days, compare the Eos1D, to the D4s...sorry Canon guys, but no...Canon is relegated to a second place.

D800 eats 5diii. I own both. Literally took them both out for a few weeks to take identical photos to decide which camera to keep and I have come to the conclusion the D800 is better in every way including noise - especially when resizing 36mp images to the same as the Canon. Dynamic range on Nikon slaughters Canon and photos can be manipulated in post so much more than the Canon ones. The Canon files just fall apart so quickly even at high ISO's.

I don't see where it is better overall unless you are a professional who needs the equipment on a daily basis to put food on the table. I am not in that case and I changed system 3 times in 7 years. Couldn't be happier with my decisions. When I don't use my system for a month, that gives me plenty of time to switch if something better is out there and that keeps me up to date. That also allows me to compare different system on longer periods of time than this pathetic review does. The day Canon release something better than Nikon, I will switch without hesitation. For now, I'll stick with my D800 :-)

John no he is right. Both cams have the same sensor, but Nikon hast more Pixels on it. that means that canon has bigger pixels. Thats what he is saying and its correct. Understand Statements before calling on somebody.

Best comparison I've seen, Dave! I was an early adopter of the 5D3 and paid the full price... now it's down below $3k on Amazon! Still it was worth it to have this camera for the past 9 months, but I've learned my lesson and will probably wait next time... if I can stand it !! It's a big step up from the 5D2 no matter what anyone says. Next I want to try Magic Lantern on it.

Hi Dave,Happy New Year from England,and many many thanks for the best and most informative review of these cameras Ive seen! I have money invested in Canon Glass,but was starting to get itchy feet with the D800! The thing that has swung it for me to get the 5D MKIII,was firstly your speed test in RAW,this would really get on my nerves-fast!The white Balance issues would also do my head in! Also personally i actually recon Canon L Glass is far better when it comes to Dust & moisture sealing.

Dave, I am a full time professional. And I have been for years. Your reviews are great and I don't care if you make zero or 100.000 dollars with photography/ I care about the simple, precise way you show your findings and opinions. I dont know if you are an engineer, but you have that kind of precise way to go about things. Thanks.

Hi Dave, I'm impressed with your videos, they are very well done and I can see how much thought and effort you've put into these. Just a note about why Canon has a lock button on the mode dial. It has a tendency to change quite easily if the camera is slung over your shoulder on the strap when it rubs agains your body. Lots of people use the Black Rapid straps, same thing when the sit down, have it rub against a leg, chair arm, etc. I am a run-gun shooter and found bringing up my camera to suddenly have to contend with a different mode than I thought I was in to make me miss shots and the critical moments. I had a 5D mark II and had it upgraded to the locking style dial and this worked better for me. I love this feature on the 5D Mark III. reliability, predictability

Dave you put things in perspective both cameras are great but you point out some things that could make a difference when shooting in certain locations. I listen to you on TWIP just last month and I have to say for an amateur you sure have a plethora of knowledge and useful information. My wife says you are just being humble, I guess thats what makes listening to you a pleasure. Great review, Thanks
