Many of you have asked about the Dynamic Range Tests & if there was a mix up. There wasn't. The methodology section is talking about HOW it is done. The opening music is called “Sinister Intent” by Danny Locke and it was licensed through songfreedom.com - he does some spectacular work and I hope to license more of his music in the future. The stead-cam shots were all done with the Canon 5Diii on a glide-cam 4000.
First off, you should know the Canon 5Diii is my workhorse camera. I used it nearly every single day I shoot. There is something about the look of the image itself I still ove, and it is very easy to use. I don’t think that will change too much in the immediate future.
When I originally started testing the Nikon D750 I was just super impressed with the still images coming out of it, there was a look and a sharpness that was noticeable and I found myself wanting to use it more and more. Eventually I came to the conclusion that the D750 was very different than the D600/610 based on image quality alone and it actually lined up very well against Canon’s 5Diii. Despite using both cameras regularly since their release, I knew that it would be impossible to say for sure which one was better and how, unless I did an Epic Shootout on them. I believe you will find many of the results surprising. This video represents a good 3-4 weeks of testing and production, so just know I do not take my Epic Shootouts lightly. Many of the tests were performed several times.

When you tested the Nikon D750 vs the Canon 6D I preferred the Canon portrait colors more, but in this test I preferred the D750 output by a big margin. It's not that difficult to correct the WB but I would have guessed that the Canon 6D and 5D would give similar results. I own the Nikon D750 btw (used to be a Canon shooter). Nice shootout!

That was great and unbiased. As someone that is considering buying a D750, you have greatly aided in my discussion. Full frame DSLRs can be a considerable investment for some of us and you have made me quite comfortable that I am staying with Nikon. The portrait teat was very well presented. More people should have that kind of approach. Thank you for your hard work.

Great video, thanks! I was floored by the portrait test.. I discovered that I preferred the D750 in every single shot. I currently have Nikon glass and shoot a D3, and I was considering either getting a D750 or possibly selling everything and going to a 5D3 and buying some L glass. Now I think I will most likely stick with Nikon and get the D750. Thanks!

As an owner of both cameras, I was stoked to see that you did an epic shootout between the two. Fantastic as always! In going back and forth between the two in the last month, I was surprised to find that the Canon 5DIII focus system was clearly still better. I was particularly surprised because the D750 is supposed to have the same system as the D4s. Your testing further confirmed my own experience. I shot about 30 weddings over the last two summers and find the focusing of the 5DIII to be indispensable. It took no time to see that ISO and DR clearly go to the Sony sensor in the Nikon. That was definitely not a surprise and I hope Canon steps up their game in the Mark IV. In terms of color, I always shoot the Canon using a Kelvin WB setting regardless of subject matter (unless I'm using flash, then flash WB). I recently put it back to auto WB to compare with the Nikon. I definitely prefer the auto WB in the Nikon over the Canon and am comfortable leaving the Nikon on auto WB for most scenarios. When I leave the Canon on Kelvin, color comparison is a wash and I don't seem to have a preference between the two. Finally, from just a pure shooting experience, I find the Canon more enjoyable to use and more ergonomic for my hands. It's still my favorite all-time camera although I'm sure the D750 is going to see some heavy use in the future also. Thanks again for all your hard work!!

Thanks Michael, a very thorough, logical and unbiased shootout on the merits of each camera. I have a D610 and wish that I had waited for the D750 but I am very pleased with the D610. If one is looking for a prosumer camera, there is a substantial price difference between the two D750 vs the 50D Mkiii. Both essentially do the same thing but the D750 has the edge on features, more bangs for the price.

That portrait test was great! First of its kind I've seen since researching between the D750 and Canon equivalent. I can generally tell the difference between the two cameras as I find the Canon is darker and warmer, but some of those portrait comparisons had me stumped.

Michael, this is THE BEST scientific, fool proof comparison that I have seen in some time. Especially, your surprise element on the Portrait shoot out completely defeated my opinions. I was so judgmental about one of the brands when it came to un-edited portrait photos, but your comparisons were simply spectacular and helped unveil a winner for specific reasons. Though it's a matter of personal preference, the portrait shoot out nailed the decision for me!!! Thank you!!!

For the 13 photos, I was able to identify the Canon vs. Nikon correctly 11 out of the 13. Nikon is yellowish while Canon lacks the dynamic range and is 'darker' looking. Nice video! Thanks.

I enjoyed this video a bunch. I currently own a D750 and have mostly been a Nikon shooter since 2011. Im mostly a portrait photographer (fashion, family, wedding, headshots etc). So moving subject focus isn't a key thing for me, however, I have obsessive issues over focus. I was surprised to hear about Canons focusing points.I really enjoyed the portrait test - I scored 8 for D750 and 5 for the Canon. So to my eye these are both almost neck n neck. Thanks for providing this in depth and I truly enjoy and appreciate all you do for the photog community.Frank

You are absolutely correct for claiming for having the best review comparisons in the planet! I'll sure share your videos with my friends. Few of us are in the midst of deciding what to buy. I currently have a d7000 which I've had for 4 years now. I think it's time for me to upgrade... I think mainly because of the price factor I'll go with the Nikon! I'm not a professional photographer, so I think the d750 will suffice more than enough. Kinda sad though why Nikon couldn't best the 3 year old Canon at every instance! Love your tests and reviews. Thanks for the portrait comparison. Canon won with a score 9:3 (subjectively, of course). I always wondered about the Nikon D750 skin tones since I am shooting Canon, weddings mostly (the dynamic range doesn't bother me that much) and thought about jumping ship and go to Nikon. After your review I am going to stay with Canon for now. Thanks :)

I find myself more drawn to the Canon video and coloring on stills, but the fact is, the D750 is just a better value, which is why I ended up buying it (kitted with a 24-120mm Nikkor for $2,500). Thanks to editing, you can pretty much shape it to get the coloring you want. I don't think it will ever beat Canon on video no matter how much editing is done, but it's close enough to be usable. I agree, the focusing system on the Nikon is a bit of a frustration.
