Had such a positive response from my last Epic Shootout, that I took the opportunity to do one on the Canon 70D and Nikon D7100, testing the most important functions of each camera in a head to head comparison. I spend a lot of time on the opening sequence so you guys know this is a piece of work that is important to me and not one that I take lightly. I know all shooters are very passionate about their respective brands and I want to be as fair and unbiased as possible, so I hope you enjoy the Epic Movie Teaser Opening and especially results I share in this shootout.
As always, I am sure there will be plenty of criticism and scrutiny about my tests, so if you have comments or recommendations I would love to hear them, I sincerely want to improve what I am doing. Something I try to do on all my videos is to show the actual evidence on how I came to the conclusions I did, instead of just reading sheet specs or basing my conclusions on opinions. If you disagree with me, I can respect that too, just please show / explain why you feel the way you do with data. (Trolls and fanboy comments, not so much lol).
If there are mistakes I have made & I imagine there will be, I will do my best to point these mistakes out. I am making a very serious effort to improve the quality of both the information and method of presenting, so I thank you for your support!
One thing I failed to mention was how much FUN the 70D is to shoot. It really is a very enjoyable shooting experience.

The opening sequence was shot with a Canon 5Diii and a Glidecam 4000. It takes a lot of practice to get smooth shots and I know I have plenty of room to improve.

Fantastic review! As I was searching for a better image quality for photography and I don't care so much about video features, I opted for the D7100 and I'm VERY IMPRESSED about its imagem quality, sharpness and low light focusing! Michael, this is the best comparison of the 70D and D7100 that I have seen! Completely unbiased and really fair tests that showed the ups and downs of both DSLRs. And it really stood up to the title, this one's EPIC! (y) keep it up bro! your videos have really improved a lot!

Hi Michael, one of your loyal fans who bought (legally) your Nikon D7100 Crash Course DVD! Love my D7100 and the ease of features as compared to the Canon comparable. I have had more than a few friends who sold their Canon Rebel series and jumped over to the Nikon D series and were much happier with the quality difference. I would absolutely recommend your Crash Course videos which amazingly cover not only the basic features but also some of the most important "advanced" features which I consider a huge bonus over other alleged "Learn to" videos sold by other people. The video is a daily reference for me until I finally feel as though I've absolutely mastered all of my cameras features, of which their are quite a few of.

The best 35 minutes I have spent today watching this video to arrive at a conclusion, compared to the endless websites I viewed yesterday for a healthy comparison. A complete and thorough comparison through real time tests between the beasts, but I have made up my mind. I am going for the Canon EOS 70D! That TouchScreen display and Wifi Connectivity is a HUGE plus!

Great work! Michael, I need your help! I want to buy a new camera and I'm struggling between the 70D and the new Sony a6000... I really need a hand here! I am interested in still IQ (video is not smth I'm into) and focusing.... Very hard for me to decide! Are there users who test them both? I know I'm talking about two diff worlds here, but mirrorless are coming closer and closer to DSLRs... I don't know if you can do a shootout, but please help!

Not judging Mike on this because he's done the greatest job on this review, but important to highlight that the Nikon d7100 body has an integrated Magnesium and a pro level water proofed body while the 70D is plastics with no claim to advanced water proofing. Something to consider while weighing in extra features.

Thats a great point...its very important i dont need touchscreen and swivel screen when i shoot in "pro mode" i need photo quality not video, i look at the price, i look at the brand and i look ofc for the build quality and resistance, water sealing and dust sealing and more "tanky" body its very important to consider when u spend this amount of cash on 2 diferent body with 2 diferent builds.

I have 8 Nikons, the most recent purchase is this camera. I love it! Yup!!! Totally & completely biased. I've owned Canon in the past, it's a very good camera. But somehow (for me) it's still Nikon.

Maybee you are biased.. youve seen the video right? So what are you talkin about? I would never shoot with 7 frames per second (in ten shots only).. seriously, whats the use of frame per second shots if you can only use it in 3 seconds rapid? And changing the aperture if really pain in the ass.. they shouldnt review nikons for video.. coz its near useless when it comes to event video shooting..

jerome cuenca I thought it was pretty clear what I was talking about. I said nothing wrong about Canon because there *is* nothing wrong with Canon. I simply stated that I preferred my Nikon's & this D7100. I take photos with my camera. I have a recorder for videos...that solves any problem (for me) that I would have.

Gingerjake2 Agree, it's all a matter of preference. I use Canon and it's a personal choice. I'm used to the interface. I can see where Nikon and Canon excels. No real wrong choice here.

jay2a That's right...I'm not sure what it is about human nature that they always have to pit one thing against the other. One has to be good - the other bad. There's no reason why both cameras can't be top products...the proof is in the pictures. And as you said, it's all what you become used to using. =}

This is my third time watching, and maybe I'm just incredibly indecisive but I don't know which to purchase. I want to do Portrait photography, Concert photography, weddings, and also a little bit of video for like band interviews, and maybe a little concert videography. For portraits and weddings the Nikon seems to be the winner, but for the Videography and concerts, the Canon seems to take the cake with its faster shooting and articulating screen. Anyone have advice on this? I really just want the most VERSATILE camera possible, that maybe won't blow me out of the water in one area, but will do everything well.

Great video! To be honest, if the Nikon D7100 had a flip-out screen that roatates, it would've bee a really hard choice for me. For me, a flip out, rotating screen is a deal breaker, haha. If it doesn't have it, I don't want it. I'm planning to buy a Digital SLR for shooting personal videos, video-blog style. I also really love taking photos, so I'm looking for a DSLR with great photo AND video perfomance. Just getting my thoughts out there, so please don't hate! :D

I agree completely. Although if they both did have the flip-out screens, I think I would lean towards the EOS 70D because of its focusing system. Although it does not have an audio plug like the D7100 has.

D7100 if your into photography! it has a built in motor! you will have more options for Lens!!!! more AF points! 100 percent view coverage! more colour depth! has 2 card slots!! its the one to take out for photo’s! as for video and touchscreen, I seriously dont care for that stuff

Nobody cares about the built-in motor, most people use decent modern lenses designed for the digital sensors. All that the motor does is adds weight.

I may just be a fan boy here, but, you said, in terms of quality Nikon takes it and in terms of bells and whistles Canon takes it. So bells and whistles are dominant to quality? So when you get nasty pictures for that wedding you shoot, all you have to say is "But I have a touch screen and wifi"?

The 70d takes awesome pictures like the 7100 they are almost the same in image quality, the only difference is that nikon is better in low light with the noise so dont judge a camera when you havent even tried out and dont be such a fanboy unlucky13tattoo

Video is much better too. He is just biased based on the touch screen lol. He even mentioned the touch screen several times throughout the video. I have both cameras and the 7100 is much better in my opinion.

Very good review with that said Im going to have to be a fan boy for a second. To summarize your video....If you don't care about having the best sharpest picture quality buy a canon lol. A camera/dslr is about picture quality and the Nikon took all the best photos and by a long shot. Picture quality is why we buy dslr's if not why not just buy a point and shoot. It feels almost like choosing a video camera by its ability to take still frames. That's simple not what it was built for.

18:56 All of this video was back and forth stats till it got to 18:56 where I paused the video and chose which pictures I thought had better color and sharpness. Sure enough the Nikon took it with much better contrast ratio ,sharpness and color. Its the one and only reason how (I) would pick a DSLR. I do wish Nikon had better auto focus as this would be what I look for second in a still frame camera but knowing at the end of the day each picture I nailed will look better side by side is all that matters to me. I love my 7100 and with great glass my pictures couldn't be better. Went thought that last test 3 times with pen and paper and liked all the Nikon pictures better in the end. If you did the same and chose Canon then we can just chalk it up to different strokes I guess.

Your right! I also love Nikon, but the hassle of changing aperture in live view is a big deal for me because I use DSLRs mainly for video. Canon's way of changing aperture saves me a lot of time.

I have the both, and I think it's really "personnal opinion" .... because for me Canon is really better than nikon... but, for sure is personnal opinion...

I appreciate your informative review and it was very thorough but I do have one big argument with your test. During the fps shootout the Nikon scored lower than the Canon 70D. My biggest argument is that the Canon 70D is a 20 MP camera where the Nikon is a 24MP camera. This test is not a fair test just for the fact that the resolution of the Nikon is a higher resolution camera and the buffer has to work alot harder to record all of that data on the card. Yes is just 4 MP more but that 4 MP can make a huge difference when writing to the buffer.

LOL thats funny! People just want to see how the fps and buffer perform, period. I did the same test with the A7s and the GH4. A7s has 12MP and the GH4 has 16 and still smoked it in every aspect, so we will have to disagree here.

MichaelTheMentor Did you make such a comparison with the PENTAX K-3 vs. NIKON D7100 or the PENTAX K-3 vs Canon 70D!?!? PENTAX K-3 may have a better product in this class (APS-C) Year 2013-2014 Thank you for this video

i tried my friend's nikon d7100 before i bought 70d .....i used it for 4 days and compared with my old canon eos 60D i would choose canon 60d comparing with nikon d7100 even....nikon has such weird colors to me...i bought 70d and so happy with my decision..i can suggest you to buy 70d for more natural real colors and great technology...nikon d7100 is great but canon outclassed it..( sorry for eng=) if you have any questions feel free to ask

lol no, Nikon gives you the real colors, has better dynamic range, that means that it can see more colors and capture them. Canon just gives more saturated colors, but you can always adjust the nikon pictures to your taste with post processing. Butwith the canon ones you cant.

No real dynamic range test by rising shadow details in post :) Bu we know who the winner is by light years: Nikon (unfortunately I have Canon)
