Good distinction between what should be manageable for a single shooter. Ruling out gimbals and drones for a single shooter sounds good to me (for most shoots). To be sufficiently present and get the moments you need in doc work, requires a maximum of two lenses. Unfortunately if you need to get a sit down interview on the day you’ll need more gear (reflector/diffusion at least, 1-3 lights potentially and stands). My conclusion is that it’s a team sport, and a team of two with shared responsibilities works well!

I'm looking at getting a C200 and your tips on the Pro Mist filters, and shooting onto the Ninja V and sometimes editing the 2k footage for quick turnarounds, are going to be life changing for me! Thanks a million! Subbed and liked! Quick question - what log do you like to shoot on? I've read that Clog 2 is the best, that Clog 3 is in between, and Clog (original) is the easiest to grade. Thanks in advance for your time! Keep up the epic work!

 So, you record 4k RAW on CFast and 2k 10bit ProRes on Atomos Ninja V? Can you record 10bit 50fps 2k on Ninja V?
How many minutes will take 512gb 2k 10bit ProRes and how many time does it take you to transcode RAW footage to 4k 10bit from your CFast card? Also, how many minutes lasts that battery on Ninja V?
Love the configuration, keep up the great work! Happy New Year from Belgrade!

epic video, thanks Griffin! I am considering buying into a C200 setup and all the videos you've put out have helped me get a much better idea of what i'm getting into. I come from shooting exclusively RED and have never played with the Canon cinema series, aside DSLR. when you transcode the cinema raw light files after a full day of shooting, on average, how long would you say that takes? also, I see a lot of concerns about shooting just to one CFast card, have you ever actually lost footage on a corrupt card? on RED it's the same thing for me - 1 media source - I've only had one instance where the card corrupted (luckily it was recoverable, too).
@GriffinConway
@GriffinConway 4 жыл бұрын
nick korompilas what’s up Nick! Thanks for the kind words. Transcoding speed depends on your computer but on a typical day I might use two 512gb cfast cards and plug them in to my MacBook Pro (8 core, 32gb ram) and use media encoder to transcode them overnight. Usually by morning they are all done. The one and only issue I have ever had with a cfast card was with a file from my last video! Lol (the c200 vs 1dx iii video). One of the files wouldn’t import and I’m sure I could have used a recovery software to get it because it still played back in camera, but I decided to just use the 1080p proxy and upscale it. That’s a good backup plan. And if you want something higher quality, you can do what I do and use a ninja v recorder and record a 2k 10 bit 422 file as a backup. I’ve shot red as well and I think you will love the canon cinema line if your work requires run n gun or doc style shooting. Hit me up if you have any more questions! Thanks bro!
@momentum_filmworks
@momentum_filmworks 4 жыл бұрын
@@GriffinConway thanks man! absolutely. the knowledge you're sharing is invaluable! good to know about those transcode speeds - that's exactly what I was looking for. I like the ninja v setup, too. are you previewing in C-Log 3 on the Ninja 5? is it just a learning curve to monitor the log and know what you'll get in post? and really nice compact setup you did with the dual monitors off the handle, I might do one just like it
@GriffinConway
@GriffinConway 4 жыл бұрын
That’s awesome! Happy to help share what I have learned with the camera. You can load luts in to the ninja v for previewing if you want. The way I actually do it usually is send a rec 709 signal to the ninja and use that footage for KZfaq bts examples and as a last resort if I ever had a card failure. I realize I am sacrificing about a stop of dynamic range by doing it this way but it works for me and my workflow. It also speeds things up if I want to pull some of that footage for example footage so I don’t have to grade it in post.

Matthias Schömer hi Matthias, thanks for checking out the video and commenting. I go hdmi out of the c200 in to the ninja v. I usually record on it but only use it so I have a 2k 10 bit 422 backup in case something goes wrong on the cfast media. @GriffinConway

Hi Hadrien. Yes latency is definitely one downside to the AVX kit. When I am in the edit, usually I select either the shotgun mic -or- the lav mic, and mute the other channel. If I need to to use both for some reason, I will bump the avx track about 2 frames forward in premiere and it fixes the issue

Love your setup! You mentioned you record on CFast and then export as ProRes...do you color grade the raw file first before export? I’m not recording Raw at the moment as it’s not necessary for my current productions but eventually I’ll move into the raw recording. Thanks and great video!
@GriffinConway
@GriffinConway 4 жыл бұрын
Island Image & Motion CNMI I just export them as 4K pro res 422 files in clog 2 (which is what it defaults to when using media encoder). Then I just color grade the clog 2 files in premiere. I don’t find they grade much different then the actual raw files, unless you are pulling down exposure by 2 or 3 stops. As long as you exposed within 1-2 stops of proper exposure you should be good without the actual raw file.

Enjoyed your video, nice one! Can throw a couple of questions. Any idea what the XLR recording max times are? Do you use cameras Mic in 3.5mm for anything? ie its 4 channel audio/scratch audio? Your record Cfast. Do you not record to Ninja v ? Raw and Cfast worry me about storage and computer processing. Do you prefer Raw to Prores from Ninja V? The C200 is everything I want except don't fancy using Raw but want better than mpeg4. C300mk2 would sort but pricey. Shame C200 can't export 10bit to Ninja V. Do you think there is a C200MK2 on its way?????
@GriffinConway
@GriffinConway 4 жыл бұрын
Laurence Grant hey Laurence thanks for the questions. I don’t think they will make a c200 Mark ii for at least another 1.5 or 2 years. They are pretty slow to refresh their cinema line. The c200 can output 2k 10 bit 422 to the ninja while simultaneously recording 4K raw to the cfast. That is usually my go-to setup. I usually transcode the raw to 4K 10 bit 422 pro res after recording and it is easy to edit. For audio I record shotgun mic to channel 1 with a backup 12db lower on channel 3. I also record the lav on channel 2 with a backup on channel 4 12db lower. I don’t use the 3.5mm in for anything usually.
@laurencegrant2882
@laurencegrant2882 4 жыл бұрын
@@GriffinConway Yes, very slooooow. to up grade products. 2k to `ninja sounds a good compromise. So you actually use the Raw lite or only 'in case' and stay with the Ninja 10bit. I can't see me using the Raw especially the price of cards and the small recordings times. I'm thinking Weddings, were I need recording time but not 4K, then short commercial/ interviews where I might like to shoot in 4k and then down scale. I am getting so confused as I currently shoot Fuji/h265/Ninja pro res. On the audio. Totally agree with your idea. So each XLR has another channel to use as a safely track? Plus ? a mic 3.5 input. But you never use. Would that be used if say you where not using chan 3 and 4 I wonder. Now if C200 had 4K 10 bit to SD cards that would be great.

Hey Griffin, I think I have the same question as Arnold. I ordered the Smallrig parts you mentioned, and I have the EVF Support for the C200 moniotor (Smallrig #2075) mounted on my camera similar to yours, and I have the Smallrig NATO Lock Clamp (Smallrig #1254) for the Ninja V, but there seems to be no way to attach the NATO clamp to the camera. The clamp that attaches the EVF support is what it looks like you are using to make this attachment--is there a way to order just the clamp separately? Is that how you made it work? Sorry to bother you--I think this is a really slick setup, but I'm a bit stuck. Thanks!
@ArnoldLimPhoto
@ArnoldLimPhoto 4 жыл бұрын
I can't tell for sure, but it looks like this SmallRig rod clamp goes into the Canon top handle. www.amazon.ca/SmallRig-Single-Camera-Support-Microphone/dp/B0747P6YJ2/ref=sr_1_15?dchild=1&keywords=EVF+Support+for+the+C200+monitor&qid=1594258768&sr=8-15 Then a 2-inch rod goes into the 15mm rod goes into the rod clamp. And then right next to the rod clamp it you put the Nato clamp onto the exposed part of the two-inch Rod, and then clamp the Ninja to the Nato part of the Nato clamp. This is a guess but I went through the SmallRig pieces and that is what it looks like, but I could be wrong.
@GriffinConway
@GriffinConway 4 жыл бұрын
I actually ordered a second c200 monitor kit from small rig just for that one part and just kept all the other parts as spares for extra rigging bits and pieces
@stevet1480
@stevet1480 4 жыл бұрын
Griffin and Arnold: thanks for your help on this. Sorry for the delayed response, but I had ordered the Smallrig clamp #1995 that Arnold mentioned, and didn't receive it till recently. And...it doesn't really work. Sigh. The screws included with the clamp protrude so far that I wonder what Smallrig was thinking here. Anyway, I was able to kluge a solution by hitting the hardware store and getting some socket-top threaded screws (which don't have heads to protrude) and attaching the clamp to the handle that way. Not great, as the clamp can't be locked down into the correct horizontal position---it tends to loosen up over time. Oh well. I do see the advantage to buying a second EVF kit and using that clamp, but here I am being penny-wise...I've got a note into Smallrig to see if they might sell that part separately, and, who knows, maybe they will (not likely, though....) Anyway, enough time here in the weeds of clamp technology. It's still a great camera and setup, and I'm looking forward to getting some real shooting in. Thanks again, guys!

Griffin you mentioned you use a small, SmallRig Rail and a 2" Nato Rail, but there is another thing you point to at around 2:45 of the video. What is the second thing you mention that connects the Ninja 5 to the Handrail? You say "I got a part from SmallRig right here" right before you point to the Nato. What is that? I didn't see clearly see or hear what the set up there was? I also didn't see it in the Amazon links. Thank you in advance.

@@GriffinConway Thanks for the clarification, I didn't realize you needed to purchase two of the EVF supports. Out of curiosity, do you find it is that much better to get that EVF support as opposed to just sticking with what Canon comes with? Thanks again.

For me it made sense. A big pet peeve of mine is un-level horizons on my monitor. The small rig setup solves this issue, so I did find it was worth it.

Nice run through of your gear. I'd like to get a backpack that fits my c200 rigged like that instead of breaking down into a peli every time.

@@GriffinConway any specific reason you went for the Wooden Camera top plate rather than the small rig? Reliability?
@GriffinConway
@GriffinConway 4 жыл бұрын
TORCHY there is a part that attaches to the front of the plate that can connect the stock c200 monitor, and then I use the c200 handle to hold my ninja v setup, and it was the only one that met those needs. If I could go back and do it again I would 100% go for a bright tangerine c200/c500 Mark ii top plate. It allows the camera to slide forward/backward to better counterbalance with heavy lenses and can also work on the c500 ii when I upgrade to that camera.

Not sure how shooting documentary with primes is hard? Just buy a TriLens holder and you can change your lenses in 3 seconds. I shoot everything with primes (and C200), and 90% of the time it's run'n'gun documentary stuff..
@GriffinConway

Hey Vladimir, thanks for the comment. I don’t necessarily think shooting documentaries with prime lenses is “hard”, but as I said it presents certain limitations. When you are filming a fight for example, even as little as 3 seconds for a lens change could be enough to make you miss a key shot like an unexpected knockout punch. In my experience, I have found most people that shoot fast paced run-n-gun documentaries to use zoom lenses, but that’s not to say prime lenses can’t be used. That’s why I sent the 85mm 1.4 🙌

@@GriffinConway Of course, if that match lasts for couple of minutes and there is no do over, but those are very rare occasions with documentary filming, there is almost always enough time to use primes for b-roll, and the results are night and day. It's like shooting a wedding with 24-70 vs 5-6 primes. As I said, try the TriLens, it completely changed the way I work.

Thank you for great video. It’s really helpful! I have one question. Is there any reason to use 1/4 black pro mist filter at 85mm?(instead of 1/8) Is it because its prime and f1.4? or Is it because main purpose of 85mm is B-roll? or any other reason?
@GriffinConway
@GriffinConway 4 жыл бұрын
WRKKR the main reason is that is a very sharp lens and I find adding the 1/4 knocks the sharpness down to my liking and adds in some character. The other 2 lenses look better with a 1/8 for most projects. Although, sometimes I will switch it up depending on how much of a “vintage” or stylized look I want it to have
