You totally nailed my gripes with the C70 - I’ve just purchased one recently after shooting on a C100 M2 for years. Yes I love the C70 codec choices, image quality and improved autofocus. I thank Canon for the great firmware updates. I went into the purchase acknowledging the weaknesses of the super 35 sensor and the other quirks of this “odd duck” camera. The display is joke - especially because no EVF and it will be used frequently! The display hinge is horrible-even with the “improvement”. The C100 hinge is so strong you could swing the camera by the display (yes I’m exaggerating but you get the point) Yes, image is “soft” compared to other 4k cameras. Yes, the bottom plate is weird - I got a small rig plate which is almost a must. Yes, the build compared to the C100 is weak - seems like cheaper plastic. All said the camera still has a respectable feature set in a compact package. Great battery life for “run and gun” people in the field like me. I had to find a EVF solution shooting outdoors but I’m dealing with it. Overall still very happy with the camera even in 2024.

@@GriffinConway Lost an CFexpress slot, AES/EBU, expansion units, row of buttons, full size XLR(huge one for me), swappable lens mounts. While having the same or lower dynamic range. I hardly care about resolution above 4K and don't care at all about sensor size. AF improvement seems nice, but lock-on on the c70/c300 was already great. Not a fan of using adapters, and there is little exciting RF glass outside of stills lenses. The PL and locking EF mounts swappable is fantastic. 4 years after the C300III, it's seems very meager. Exciting specs would been 32bit audio recording, electronic stepless ND system with auto function, IR-mode(cool feature on EVA1), IBIS , new handle with a zoom rocker or the jackpot.. ARRI 35 level DR haha. Even some remote/wireless control would be cool, but it's again very Canon-like closed off system. I heard they are bringing back interval recording, that was a strange omission from last gen. Maybe also raw output over SDI, like the C300II but then never any camera after that.

Things you did not mention: No DGO sensor on the C400! This is likely due to it being full frame. But based on early tests, this camera does not appear to perform as well in the highlights as the C300 III and C70, and might even have slightly lower dynamic range. Check CVP’s dynamic range test. The highlight rolloff does appear to be harsher on the C400. Battery power! The C300 III and C70 will both last much longer than the C400 which will more than likely require V-Mounts, much like the C500 II. The C300 and C70 can run forever on small BPU batteries. No EVF! The omission of the EVF is huge to me coming from a C300 III and a C500 II. Canon’s on-camera LCD is not bright enough to be seen in mid-day, noon sun. I really wish Canon would have at least given us the option of bolting an EVF onto the back of the camera like they did with the C300 III and C500 II. The USB monitor is cool, but Canon has not confirmed that you will be able to utilize 3rd party monitors via that port!
@GriffinConway22 күн бұрын
Good notes, thanks for the comment. You are correct, no DGO. Canon claims 16 stops on this camera, the c70, and c300 mark iii. They claim 15 stops on the c500 mark ii. The only ones who have done proper side by side testing that I have seen is the video I reccomended, CVP. My guess is in the real world there will be minimal difference. For battery power, C70 draws 14w, c300 mark iii is 31w, and c400 is 31w as well. So c70 will definitely have the edge for low power draw. Canon told me 3rd party USB-C evf's will be available, as well as SDI evf's. I'm not sure about rear evf's though. Canon told me it will definitely be able to work with 3rd party monitors. That was one of the things they were proud of. Thanks for the comment DC!

I have been shooting Blackmagic, but for commercial work the name “Ursa” does not carry any weight. So the Ursa’s are gone and though I have access to FX6 bodies when needed, I had not purchased any for my own kit in hope that Sony would release a next gen FX6 or FX9. Well looks like Canon has jumped ahead and I have put in a preorder for the C400. My biggest disappointment is the single CFExpress slot. Though there’s some consolation in having simultaneous proxies to the SD slot. I had a CFExpress card go bad on me recently. Thankfully this was during testing prior to a shoot so nothing was lost, but it was a reminder that solo card recording will always be a tightrope walk and client work can get lost when you least expect. Anyway, C400 it is for me going forward.
@GriffinConway23 күн бұрын
Nice I am sure you will love the c400. One thing to note, it can record full 4k 10 bit 422 files to the sd card simultaneously while recording raw to the cf express, so that is a really solid backup!
@waveland23 күн бұрын
@@GriffinConway 10-bit 422 is a lot more substantial than a proxy. That’s for sure. Overall it’s a lot of camera for the money and who else will go to the trouble of engineering a triple native sensor? I’ve wanted the 12800 for those times when the light runs out and now I’ll have a camera tailored for the in-between conditions as well. That’s a lot of flexibility.

Hey Griffing, thanks for the info. I know you have a lot of experience with the C70. I would like to ask you two questions if you don’t mind: Speaking solely about dynamic range, how does the C400 stacked sensor compares to the C70s DGO sensor? Do you think this would replace the C70 or do you see a C70 Mark II coming in the future. Bonus question: Would you buy the C400 to replace your C70s? Thanks a lot for your content, it led me to get the C70 and it was a money maker for me for the last couple of years.
@GriffinConway24 күн бұрын
Awesome glad to hear that! Thanks for watching. I think the c70 will have a mark ii in the future. It was a popular camera and I can imagine a version ii coming out that’s priced lower than the c400 with a few less features. On the topic of dynamic range, I haven’t personally tested them but I will test them side by side in real world conditions and see what is noticeable. From the early tests I’ve seen, it seems they are very close in dynamic range, perhaps with a slight edge to the c70. For high iso I think the c400 will be much better. I plan to keep my c70’s and the c400 will likely replace my c500 mark ii.

What I am curious about is qualitative difference between the DGO sensor in C-70 & this sensor? The low light capability is very appealing if visually it is comparable to DGO.
@kitbaker913425 күн бұрын
Surprised to hear the you loose some of the character when shooting with your Ironglass lenses on the c70. Does your RF to PL adapter have a speedbooster? If it does, I would have thought the lens would show up the exact same as a full frame sensor e.g. the edge fall off, bokeh etc
@GriffinConway22 күн бұрын
What I mean was they are full frame PL mount lenses. When I have to use the RF to PL adapter I don't get the "full frame look" since it only uses the center portion of the lenses. Still looks good but it turns the 58mm in to a 87mm field of view.

For me personally, it's a pass. The ergonomics aren't to my taste (I prefer compact and light, the smaller the better). And in the sample footage I've seen so far, there really hasn't been much of a jump in image quality compared to a C70, though I'd be open to being proven wrong by a side-by-side comparison. But the odds are that, in a year's time, Canon will bring out the same sensor, drop it in smaller body with fewer inputs and outputs, and halve the price. Then, sure, I might think about upgrading...
@GriffinConway26 күн бұрын
I'm looking forward to testing the C70 side by side with the c400, but either way the c70 is still an amazing camera.

Pre-order placed. Just about everything I was personally looking for and cheaper than expected. Only two things I still want, and who knows they might be possible, is 3:2 open gate and 1.5x anamorphic desqueeze.
@GriffinConway26 күн бұрын
I don't think the sensor is technically 3:2 I think it's a slightly different size but ya, I agree whatever the ratio full open gate and also a 4:3 sensor mode would be great. I haven't talked to anyone but I wouldn't be surprised if they add a 1.5x desqueeze in firmware

Happy OG Komodo user since August, 2020. I came from the c200, loved the ergonomics but like many missed that middle ground codec. While the c300mkiii had my attention, I just didn't go for it, same with the c70 . The c400 however checks way more boxes than the Komodo X does for our projects and I think it's initial feedback has officially sold me. Very impressive camera and I can't wait to produce something with it!

The c300mkiii/c500mkii is the most Ergonomical camera in that price range. With the most features I would argue. I love the way these cameras feel bare or rigged out. The c70 is cool for what it is but the placement of Card slots/Timecode and audio is bonkers it was clearly an afterthought.

Thank you for the recommendation! I think those are all good camera options, but the ronin 4d means your lose audio capabilities and don’t have the option to get rid of the “gimbal look” if you don’t want it for your shot. I think this is the perfect c70 upgrade. I will get the camera in for testing and compare it with c70/c500 mark ii and see how the dynamic range looks. Canon says it’s 16 stops which is the same as the c70 and more than the c500 mark ii
