Canon EOS M50 vs M6: Which To Buy?

Күн бұрынWith Canon's recent announcement of the new Canon EOS M50, it makes a hard decision whether to buy the M50, the M6 or the M5. In this video, I discuss the main points of both the Canon EOS M6 and the M50. I am an M6 owner and I really enjoy this small workhorse of a camera. But the Canon M50 is the first 4K Canon mirrorless camera on the market. But, as you will hear, it's a bit limited. Are you interested in the Canon EOS M50? Do you own the M5 or M6? Note: someone else mentioned the new smaller RAW CR3 files for the M50 which is a good addition but if that's a big worry for you then that could be a deal breaker.

Between m6 vs m50 which camera records better quality video in 1080p am looking to purchase either or for ghost haunting videos i have light attachments, mics you name it.but just looking to see out these 2 camera which ones has the sharpest 1080p.have a great day hope to hear from you

@@holycrapghosttv Both are basically the same really so no difference. I prefer the M50 though. But for ghost hunting you need more of a camcorder that has night vision.

Just ordered the M50. I shoot stills on a 5Dmk3 and have alot of really top end glass. But that body only does 1080p at 24/25 fps. I basically bought the M50 as a second body purely for video, and to shoot slower B roll at 120fps. With an EOS M to EF adaptor, I can use all my top glass (f1.2 etc...). I dont care about 4k at all as all my stuff is basic corporate work (nothing broadcast quality needed).

I've used the m6 for a while before I switched to the m50, the m6 was perfect for vlogging and such so yes!

Nice video. Thanks. As requested in the video, I have the M6, EVF2, and several lenses. I use it professionally. I will most definitely pick up the M50 for the reasons you mentioned, hot shoe, variable screen, mic input, lighter, etc. I will most likely pick up two of them and unload the M6, just because I don't like dealing with the EVF, although I only use it about 10-15% of the time. Mirrorless is THE way to go. As I say to most folks, if you use a mirrorless for one or two days, you will probably never want a mirror again.

Dr Dimento out of curiously, why is the EVF a pain to use? I’m shopping these cameras and was considering the M6 so I could have my cake and eat it too in regards to the EVF. Also, did you end up getting the m50? Thanks!

M50 is still better here is why: 1. the bitrate in 1080p is much better on M50, higher quality 1080p 2. 4k (in MF mode I can imagine its really good) 3. 720p 120fps (slow motion looks a lot better with 120fps) 4. EVF 5. Sync with your smartphone seamlessly 6. Vari Angle screen more versatile The cons of M50 vs M6: 1. 20% decrease in battery life 2. a little bit bigger with EVF 3. fewer control dials 4. build quality maybe a bit cheaper 5. chrome looks great

M6 in my country is much more expensive today than M50, M50 built quality is so terrible and very cheap compare to M6

Eric I think 4k has been a little overdone, harder to process , upload and quite frankly VERY FEW people watch things in 4K. On two other channels they said about 2-4 peeps per 100 actually watch it in 4K. At first I was scratching my head at this decision by Canon to make the 4K limited in use but when I learned the facts it really is not that important as long as the 1080 is great!

Once you switch to 4K, the difference is night and day. Even if the final product is delivered in 1080p. It also allows much heavier cropping, which can also aid in post stabilization. With today's tech it's not harder to edit. Just look at the latest Sony A7III which downsamples 6k to 4k for great footage. Same applies when you downsample 4k to 1080p. My workflow could never go back to 1080p now...

I am not a videographer, but the extra time to process and upload hardly seems worth it if only 2% of viewers watch it IN 4K?

You would be uploading in 1080p. They would be watching in 1080p. Think of it as working with a RAW file... you crop it, adjust levels, color it. Then upload it to the web as a .jpg. I recently did a talking head interview with just the 1 camera, but I managed to get a 2 camera feel because I could punch into the 4K. End result was a lovely 1080p uploaded to youtube. Try to avoid thinking of 4K as just an end result of what people watch. Shooting in 4K will give you much more flexibility no matter what resolution you deliver the final product in.

Should the question be, given the price, M50 or D200/SL2 - what are the differences/similarities. What's the better option between the two?

it depends on your intent, If you want more of a dslr, then the sl2. But for me, to vlog and to be more portable, the m50/m6 makes more sense.

I give you props for making the video, but instead of saying... "A lot of people" you should have said for those few who are interested in the Canon (current) mirrorless options. It's ...blah blah. I would think most people would be looking at the other mirrorless makers for a more complete package.

I used to hv m6 i sold it & bought m50 because of the 4k & faster autofocus plus i hv the 11-22mm lens so i am very excited on the quality & crisp of the 4k thanks for this video great content 👍🏽

Hey Eric, I too was disappointed when I heard about the 4K specs....seems Canon will take another couple of years til they do a real 4K video camera

I love Canon, but this is a shame. Don't care about 4k, but why not pack everything else needed? DP AF + 1080p120 + mic input. Don't need much more to vlog.

I know more about astrophysics than I do about video and that’s Jack all. I also doubt that I will be upgrading my 7DII to a 7DIII, but I wonder if the M50 a precursor for the 7DIII? It feels like this is dipping toes in water. I was looking forward to hearing your opinions of the M50 and you haven’t let me down, great video as always and when it comes to reviews yours is the only one I ever watch.

Recently been shooting video with the Canon 77d digital + EF 24-105mm F4/L IS lens and the digital IBIS works great, handheld video looks like it was shot on a monopod. The IBIS works great ! major downside is the additional crop.

Hi Eric! You already explain that it's not worth it to upgrade from M6 to M50, but what if I don't have any camera at all? Which one should I choose for video shooting? I am completely new to cameras so I don't really know what to choose between these 2.

I am looking at a possible change to Mirrorrless, so I am listening to people, like yourself. I shoot 70D now and reading about all of the newer body's. Not interested in 4K, so it is a non-issue

What would you be using it for? I'd wait to see what Canon/Nikon actually comes out with. The M50, M5, M6 arent the everyday type of camera in my opinion. But just depends on your goals and what you shoot

Most of my shooting is when I travel, and at 72, it is getting tougher to drag around a Full size. I am not a PRO or Vlogger, just a guy who loves to take photos, and I love using an EVF, so the M5 & M50 would be a choice, but I do want to see what they offer in FF Mirrorless

I gotcha. Yeah then the M50 or M6 is a great choice! I'd recommend the M6 but both being a crop sensor is a huge plus since you'd be coming from the 70D. Just keep in mind you'd need a lens adapter to use your current canon lenses if you planned to do that

Hey Eric&Everybody.. thanks for the review. I currently own old camera- canon t2i\550D I wanna upgrade.. Would you say in terms of image quality compared to an old fashion dslr which one is better? The main thing I got from the review it's 4K is not that good.. But I am not a vlogger \ not worrying about the video quality. I want to upgrade my image quality :) I use mainly prime lenses..

hi, first of all I'm from south korea so my english skill is bad.. The question is I bought m6 2 month ago but most people say that m50 is much better than m6. I prefer photo than video. It's that different about photos? I want to know your opinion.

They are very similar, so if you dont care about the video or the way the screen flips, you would be fine!

Hey Eric! I think in mirrorless cameras evf consumed battery so m-6 is better option. Maybe I’m wrong. Do share your thoughts. I’m planning to buy one of them but for still photography. From Pakistan 🇵🇰 by the way really like your reviews about cameras 📷

I’m a lil late but I don’t wanna blow a huge band for my lil channel yet, so as of now M6 or m50? I like the m50, I’m not a fan of the flip out screen but I don’t do much vlogging as of now. But as I grow my content might change so maybe j should use the m6?..hmm what do you think

Hi Eric, great review comparisson! I am currently lookong for a pocket camera that has selfie screen, fast af, great 35mm and 50mm lens with fast aperture for family, street, travel and as an everyday camera as well, I was also lookong at the Canon m100 but that doesn't have enough control buttons to play and too small in the hands. I sold my DSLR system and would want to shoot back mainly as a hobby, I also would want to spend not more than a thousand for the entire kit. I am leaning towards the m6 but would like to ask if that camera is still worthwhile considering its age vs competing brands? I am also aware that there is limited lens upgrade path for this system. I hope to hear from you. Thank you

The M6 would be great, but they do have lenses to cover what you'd need! Yeah its limited but knowing that going into the M line is a good thing

@@Eric_Rossi I just saw a used M6 with the EFM 22 f2 for a little over 400 USD, i guess it is worth a try and hopefully grab the new 35mm f1.4 in the future since the camera ticks almost all the boxes for my use case. Thank you for response.

Hey Eric! I am honestly about to order me a M6 with the Rode Pro, and L bracket. This will be my first camera to do videos with and photography while I travel the world. Hi Eric, I have been shooting dslr's for like ever but off late was thinking about buying a mirrorless for smaller size for everyday street photography? How does a mirrorless camera holds up against the dust in that regard ( please note that I am from india and we have more dust than air here)?? And which has the better responsiveness between a dslr and mirrorless body? I hope you answer my questions; if mirrorless is reliable enough for street photography( in dusty conditions) then I am certainly going for either M5 or x 100f. Thanks.

Thats a tough call, either way dust and such will be an issue. But on mirrorless you'll notice a larger issue.

Thats exactly what's keeping me away from Buying one. However, the size factor is too tempting to ignore and there are so many good options now. I guess I will be buying one soon and I hope canon doesnt cripple their mirrorless line up since most of the users buying it would come from consumer segment and for them, spec sheets matter a lot. Things already looking not too good with DPAF being taken out of 4k in M50 lols. Canon would shoot themselves in the head if they cripple their mirrorless lineup. Btw, I love your reviews man. They are much more practical than many famous reviewers out there and focus more on the usability of the camera rather than specs like, Dynamic Range at the base iso.

The m50 has a new raw file that's 40% smaller a new silent mode and has increased their 1080 mbps and Canon's new bluetooth remote works with the m50 but not the m6. There's other new features but wait to try one before buying it.

I take more pictures than videos ..but I do take videos too... Im not too particular about the form factor of the camera I just need to get good quality images .

All of these cameras now a days will help produce great images, just comes down to the user. I'd look into either of those. Try going to a local store, if possible depending where you live, and get a hands on with them

Hi Eric, please help me. :) I can not make a decision ... Canon M50 or Sony 6300?? What do you think what is better for me if i am a beginner. I would like a camera with a reasonable price and smaller size for taking nice photos (wide angle and macro) and amateur videos when i am tracking somewhere or just want to film the sea waves and sounds or record my singing bowls (with a microphone). Oh and ... I really do not care the 4K... Thanks

you'd want the a6300 in that case no doubt. You'll be able to do much more with it. but it depends on your budget, if you want a flip screen etc. Another alternative is the Canon SL2

Hey Eric! I don’t shoot video, unless it’s just for personal use. I shoot time lapses but I mainly shoot stills. I shoot mainly nature but I do shoot “ fine art” and abstracts. Basically, all I care about is IQ. I LOVE Canon color. I also prefer a view finder but.... I can live without it. I also am not an amateur so will I be happy with the M50? I am going towards the M50 because it’s now more affordable and I am on a really strict budget. I saw the M6 on Canon refurbished, for $489 but no lens and with the 22mm, tax,etc., I will be paying almost $900! Don’t laugh but I can get the M50 from Target on my card for $649, lens included and I have 60 days to return it. Canon only gives you 14 days. This will pretty much be my only camera at this point. My T3i is done and I have been using a Nikon D3300. It takes great photos but... I just prefer Canon plus I already have a few Canon lenses so with an adapter it would be all good. Now, I was also considering the 77D but my shoulder pain makes me shake so I was looking for a lighter camera. I do wish I had kept the Sony a6000 but at the time, I didn’t realize what an asset it would have been. Thanks and sorry for the long comment!

i want to concentrate on photo (80%) and vieo (20%), i can sell 6d body and choose a canon M or sell all (6d body, 70-200f4, 35/2, 24-105, 100/2) and buy a6300 or canon, or another one?

4k without DPAF is a joke. DPAF is the only area where canon leads. I would get a Panasonic G7. if the M series could mount EF lenses without adapters I might change my mind.

Ahh I don't think you understood what I meant by reliable, like mentioned build quality. The m50 is a cheaper build more plasticy compared to the m6. Like mentioned, if I dropped the m6 I wouldn't worry but the m50 I wouldn't be confident in.

Hey man thanks for the reply! Really appreciate it. Mostly self-made music videos, 50% driving in a car at sunsets and low light, sometimes night citydrives (lit up city lights), think 80's and synthwave. Sometimes low light/night inside the car driving and you wanna see the driver's face...lense depending too. But a smaller one is preferable, maybe it's up to SL2 vs M50? 1080p is enough. 1080p on the M50 better quality or not?

I dont think the M50 would be the best bet. I'd look into maybe the T7I or 70/80D. All depending on your budget

Hey Eric, I too was disappointed when I heard about the 4K specs....seems Canon will take another couple of years til they do a real 4K video camera

I think they are at least a year away, the 90D is due this year but they may be pushing that back for the mirrorless move

Originally it was supposed to be in the Spring, but I was counting on a Black Friday debut.....you think the 90D could be pushed into 2019 ?
