Күн бұрынToday I’m going to compare the Canon M50 and the Canon SL2. These are two of the most popular cameras of the year and I have received a lot of requests for this video.
I’ll cover the strengths and weaknesses of the SL2 and the M50 for both photography and video, and compare everything frombody type, framerate and resolution, autofocus, lens options and portability.
I will also look at the M50 and SL2 in terms of battery life, image stabilization, timelapse and will even discuss the viewfinder.

I purchased my first DSLR a Canon T1i many years ago, I love taking great pictures but found it too bulky for traveling most of the time. I am upgrading to the Sl2 because of its size, features and my lenses will fit., I feel like I will use it more often. I have my SL2 and I love it so much I bought it right before the m50 came out and I was gonna sell it to get the smaller size but I was able to get more lenses, I can't stress it enough for vlogging or even a beginner KZfaqr! can't wait for more videos *subbed* much love from Vancouver Canada!

The Viltrox Speed-booster makes the M50 a much better option. It tuurbo-charges my Canon EF lenses.

Before buying my M50 this year I watched several of your reviews on various cameras. Your reviews were tremendously helpful! For me, it came down to weight. I like hiking and can no longer lug around a lot of gear. Every ounce adds up. I decided the M50 along with a couple of lenses and my iPhone 12 Pro Max is all I can manage. I took some photos on a high country trail in Yosemite, and right out of the box I didn’t have any problem using the M50 in auto mode. I did get the extra batteries, thanks for the tip, I needed them! I’ll check out your user manual on the M50 again, and in a little while I’ll check on a zoom lens that won’t break my back. I’d like to get nice sharp close-ups of El Capitan and Half Dome. Thanks again for bringing some light into my photography confusion!

Hey there, a few comments. I'm a first time viewer, and I absolutely love your channel already. I enjoy how thorough you are in the reviews and your honesty about how everyone's needs are different. At 7:22 you mention recording in a variety of framerates and then the editing process. I'd love to see a video on these basics. Great video, extremely informative. On the M50, is there a way to set up manual exposure settings for timelapse? Or is the only choice auto. Also, is there an option for the stills to be saved on the video timelapse?

I can set the exposure manually but I can't get a shutterspeed lower than 1/30. I don't believe you can have the still saved because this is actually a movie mode. Hope this helps Pete.

Correction, thanks to Vladimir Shvarts: I misspoke when I said the SL2/200d has 720p @ 120fps. That feature is only available on the M50. What's up everyone?! That 70-200 looked gigantic on the sl2 lol. Great video! I plan on getting the sl3 since it incorporates the digic 8 and 4k video, closing the gap even more. I was already leaning toward the sl2 because I don’t have to pay 150 bucks for an adapter for my current lenses. With these changes it’s a clear choice for me. There are so (too) many ways. One of the easiest is to pull out and replace one eyepiece with an adapter that has some optics and connects to the camera without lens. These adapters cost between ~$100 and >$1000, depending on quality, etc.. Once installed, the Canon Camera Connect app should be very helpful for seeing the image and taking pics and videos.

Thanks so much. I did it for a few reasons. First, lighting, it was challenging to keep consistent. Second, audio. Those are noise dampening. I may still bring the windows back when it’s snowing and overcast! Thanks for watching and being part of the community.

I don't have the G7XMKII anymore so I can't do that. The image quality will be better on the M50, plus it will have a fully articulating screen, audio input, better autofocus. Hope this helps.

@@TechGearTalk For upgrading my KZfaq vlogs AND photography (macro, wildlife, landscape, architecture, street)...I'm still a little torn between the two. Now the price of the M50 has just dropped to 599 with kit lens but there still seems to be complaints. In this price range, you can't get every little thing you want so there's sacrifices & trade offs. Interestingly enough, after handling both devices in-store, I was surprised the SL2 felt so good in hand. I thought as a dslr, it would feel too bulky but the grip was great. The M50 was good but it's so dinky and has a plastic feel. I'm new to both mirrorless & dslr. Which do you recommend for my needs?? And apologies for the novel!

I agree. The SL2 is a small DSLR, and the M50 sometimes feel like a bit of a toy. I don't mean that from an image quality or even a build quality, it's just the size.

eh, it would have been more helpful if you actually vlogged with both and showed the differences. Don't get me wrong super helpful video with all the technical differences (i'm subscribed, not hating), but the thing you're missing is a real world example. Nobody is making videos of stationary objects. I've used both and these are the main differences: M50 The M50 has that digital stabilization which is JUST OK, it's good enough to where you can walk and talk into the camera or walk and show what a landscape is like - (if you're a travel vlogger this important) and have the video be somewhat stable. The SL2 however is mess. It's super shaky, you really can't walk and talk with that camera. Also the M50, while more stable it crops in a lot with stabilization on. So it's harder to get a wide angle look and have it be smooth and stable. SL2 The SL2 has higher quality video. It's looks like an 80D. The M50 looks like an Iphone. Both are good, just the SL2 is better. It also native access to all those amazing lenses like the 50mm and the 10-8mm. Making the Sl2 so affordable for the quality you get. Conclusion The M50 is smaller and the lenses are smaller which is great - It's the superior on the go travel camera. But the speed booster everyone talks about is expensive. People don't realize this. They think it's like a cheap adapter you can get at Walmart :) It's not. Also, it makes the M50 bigger, the point of the M50 is to be small. If you're doing sit down, talk into the camera videos, get the Sl2. If you want higher quality video, get the Sl2. If you want the most bang for your buck, get the Sl2. If you want something small, capable and somewhat stable - particularly if you're doing a lot of on the go, outdoor recording get the M50. I'm assuming anyone reading this, that you're a beginner. I ended up buying the SL2.

If someone is willing to give up a few things (headphone jack, weather sealing, etc) the sl2 is a great 80d alternative. I did another video showing the image quality comparison. The reason for shooting static objects in that video is to keep the subject and lighting identical. Glad to have you as a contributing member of this community 🙏🏻

The flip screen on the Lumix is on top though and no audio unless you use an audio recorder. Can you give any input? My needs are lightweight, affordable, pictures and vlogging. M50. Audio is so important, so why force yourself to sync it every time? Af is better on the M50 also. Image quality is great on both. Overall user experience is better on the canon imo

Great videos man! Your channel is super informative. Now, i'm torn between those two - which would you recommend as a sort of "allrounder"? I want to use it for Content creation (videos), but also photography of any kind (architecture, nature, portraits). And i wouldn't have any more budget for additional lenses at the moment, and i also don't own any yet as this would be my first camera. Leaning towards the sl2 so far. Thanks!

Wow, thank you so much for the kind words. If you're ok with the slightly larger size (some people actually prefer it because of handling) the SL2 is an awesome choice. Check out this other video I just released about the SL2 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/odOpZ7KimL_GfYk.html I think you just start with one lens (maybe the 18-55mm stm IS) and then you will probably want a wide angle (maybe 10-18) for your architecture. This was easy. "SYSTEM"! Comparison is fun, but for me the SL-2 is ready out of the box for all that Canon Glass. Also it is cheaper so you can invest more in glass. A no brainer. Also the M50 is too small. I hated how it fit in my hand. Also the stupid 4K UHD crop. Why Canon??? I could have forgiven the size of the body and handling, but as always Canon just being stupid on protecting Cinema Line Pro cameras. Also since the M50 was so small how was it handling the bigger lenses with an adapter on top of that. The SL-2 is small already, and big lenses are already fun on that. So the winner for me was the SL-2. 1080P is just fine. Still have Dual Pixel AF, Flip Screen, I use an external Audio Recorder so the only so so Mic Preamplifiers of the SL-2 are a non factor. Stills both rock. EVF is nice vs. the tunnel vision SL-2 Viewfinder. But I am doing video more than stills.So low price, killer AF, a lens system the biggest in the business, and terrific value scream SL-2. Only one other feature that would make the SL-2 perfect, a Headphone output, but hey costs, and heat of the OP Amp needed and space keep the SL-2 from getting one.

Outstanding insight Vincent. I think for vloggers who don’t need 4K, the small form factor of the M50 is nice. If you end up getting the 22mm 20 is really nice. DPAF is just my favorite. I just got the EOS R and am curious to see where it fits in the lineup.

@@savoringlifewithpe6138 personally I love the SL2--it's small and light weight enough to carry anywhere yet big enough to be able to grip--that was my biggest complaint about the M50---it was so small it was actually more uncomfortable than the bigger SL2! And even though the M50 has a newer processor, it has the same sensor size as the SL2. I got mine from Canon, refurbished with the 18-55 mm kit lens for $399--which is a steal! Refurbs from Canon are a great way to save money--I've bought several items and you can't tell the difference between new and refurb. Warranty is the same too.

Both will give you essentially the same image quality. The m50 is smaller and more portable, and now has these lenses available: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q7WCh5SVy8u3YIE.html The SL2 is a little bigger, and you can use all the canon lenses without needing an adapter (although you can use those lenses with the M50 and adapter). Glad it was helpful. I'll start at the end, yes, you can use the whole line of canon EF/EF-S lenses with the adapter. I would start with the kit lens and then see how wide you want to go based on that. There is an 11-22mm which is super wide (but maybe it's too wide for you, depending on the situation). The 22mm f/2 is awesome and is also very fast. Even faster is the 32mm f/1.4, but that's not really wide angle. This is why I suggest you start with the kit lens so that you can see what focal length you like without spending a lot of money. (or go to a store and play with it). Hope that's helpful.

When I got my SL2 I already had EF lenses. I have a Rebel G (film) and a Rebel XTI that use EF lenses. I also like how the SL2 can shoot from the screen or the shutter button. I also set up back button focus.

Great video! I am in the market for a new apsc camera after selling my rx100iv (found it to be too small). Having hard time choosing between m50, sl2 and fuji xt100. If only the canons had USB charging it would have made it much simpler. Do you think that switching from rx100 to sl2 will be "hard"? (In therms of focus thru the viewfinder)

@@TechGearTalk The M50 has the in body image stabilization, although it's digital but still good to have. Also touch and drag AF when using the EVF. Anyway, your nba sample footages and photos look great, which make sense now with the L lens! But I'm surprised you can bring such a camera and lens to the games. These are not allowed in my Lakers home games.

Thank you- I am leaning towards the SL2 because of affordability and I don’t really want to shoot video in 4K if the auto focus isn’t great in the m50, plus I don’t want to deal with 4K video all over the place. Also I plan to use a gimbal. So in 1080 the sl2 can do 60fps? I want to be able to do slow motion. Also I hear the Chicago accent and the outdoor shots looked like my hometown, Evanston.. ! thank you for a thorough review!

Naroved it down pretty much to the M50 and the 200D. And now I just watched your video. You need a million subs. This has been one of the best reviews and comparisons with the M50. I have a bunch of cameras (T1i, 5d, T3, T7i, and G16) but I wanted something more compact than my DSLRs but with better quality photos than my G16. This was super helpful and I think I'm going to pick up a M50.

Both would work for that purpose. The M50 might work better for traveling because it’s even smaller. The SL2 is not a big dslr but it’s still bigger than the m50.

After getting 30k subscribers from my first year YouTubing, I am finally making the upgrade from iPhone for filming to Camera. The SL2 is sounds good! Glad they are helpful. The SL2 is a good entry level camera. I always suggest investing in lenses over camera body.

Excellent video, subbed! Question for you: I would like to get one of these cameras, and it would be 95% for videos. I would like to shoot tennis videos (instructional and of people playing), as well as interviews and of me speaking. Considering this, and what lenses I might need to shoot crisp videos, which would you recommend? Thanks and great work! :)

Alright, so the reality is that both will work great for what you need. (I just published an image/video quality comparison and I think you'll see that they are pretty close: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jquYprhexqu8YGg.html ). As far as lenses, there are several considerations but we have to pick a body first (unless you plan on getting an EF/EF-S adapter for the M50. The M50 setup will be much smaller and lighter (if that's a consideration) What do you think?

@@TechGearTalk I really appreciate your responsiveness to my (and everyone's) questions! I do think the portability of the m50 would be a pretty big plus, although I could definitely deal with the SL2's weight too. I'd be taking the camera to the tennis court a decent amount. Thanks for your image quality review! It was helpful, although I think your upcoming video quality review will help me the most because I am more concerned about the video capabilities. The 4k on the m50 is also nice (although I'll probably shoot almost all in 1080), so I guess it's SL2 for the battery life and no adapter for lenses vs. m50 portability, 4k, and image stabilization for me. I'm getting closer (leaning more towards m50) especially if I can get a lens adapter for a decent price, but I think your video review might be the tiebreaker :) If I am willing to get a lens adapter for the m50, would the m50 be a no brainer then? I'm still kinda torn as a couple of the lenses I am interested in fit natively with the SL2. So on the one hand, I can just get an adapter, but if I prefer to use the more budget lenses that fit natively with the SL2 (i.e. nifty fifty), maybe I should just get the SL2. Then again, maybe 4k will come in handy at some point. Sorry for blabbering on and on but these are my thoughts. Thanks again Boss!

Don't forget that the 4k is at 24fps only on the M50. Were you planning on shooting at 24fps? Also, my comparison video has video comparison in the second have. It's a new scene, again with no movement because of the shutterspeed issues - but it will show noise. Sounds like the SL2 might be a better fit for what you want, due to the limited EF-M line.
