Correction: At 1:23 it shows a C200 clip that was overexposed and then pulled back 3 stops, and the clip at 1:38 was an R5 image overexposed and pulled back 3 stops. Missed those labels on the export and didn't feel like exporting again because 8K takes forever lol.

Awesome points! Just something to note for a future video the H.265 codec does in fact open natively in premiere.. but if you want serious speed you have to go to Windows, and also 4K HQ mode is available at any time even if the camera is overheating.. I believe even at 60p.

Thanks for checking the video out! When I said it wouldn't play back in premiere, a better way to put that would be "it would import and and allow to be dropped on the timeline, but without proxies playback wasn't possible using my imac pro or macbook pro". This was a solid side by side explanation. This was something that I was wrestling with on whether to go with the C200 or the R5. Hey Kutrovski! I hear ya! They are both great cameras. I think it just boils down to what your shooting style is. If it’s more photo and video work combined the r5 is great, but if it’s on set working in a professional situation with a client I would go c200

Really appreciate you making videos like this. I've seen some where they say the R5 has to be shot in 8K RAW log versus 8K RAW otherwise it doesn't have as much DR. I still think it doesn't have as much DR as the C200. I'm in OC too. I have a C200, but I don't do commercial work. To me the ultimate would be an R5 in a C70 body with all the R5 good stuff. ND, buttons, codecs. I sort of prefer the C70 form factor over the C200. Sort of like a mirrorless on steroids. The things I like about the R5 are tilt screen, internal raw, autofocus, IBIS, stills, travel, and stealth. (When I shoot with my C200 people are always coming up to me and asking me who I'm shooting for). I still shoot with a 5dII and the R5 is sort of a bridge for me with the C200. It sort of upgrades my 5dii and merges with my C200. I'll probably shoot a little less with the C200 once I get an R5 but I won't stop using it. I was going to wait until the pandemic settled down a bit but I've decided to go ahead and and get one. I can be shooting during the whole time would have been waiting. I actually watched this a couple of months ago but decided to pull the plug on the R5 recently. Videos like this help me make decisions like that purchase. They're detailed. To the point. Show content. Objective. And from someone in the business, not an influencer. Much appreciated. Thanks from one of your neighbors.

Thanks for making this video. Just checking whether the R5 4k 10bit you compared to the C200 4k 8bit was the R5's oversampled 4k HQ or the regular pixel binned 4k? I understand from other reviews that the pixel binned 4k is the only one that doesn't overheat? Also, did you notice much difference in rolling shutter between the two cams in your handheld tests? I'm happy with the rolling shutter on my C200 but on the EOS R 4k it's quite hard to get nice handheld doc style movement without jello creeping in. Keep up the great work dude, much appreciated.
@GriffinConway4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I didn’t test the over samples 4K, only pixel binned which I found to look really good. This is the only mode that doesn’t overheat to my understanding. Rolling shutter seems to be a non issue for my style of shooting on both cameras

Hey Griffin, Thanks for the review. I really like the tone and phase of your videos. Keep it up. One question which most people seem to skip now that 4K is what most people expect from camers. How it is the HD material? Is there a oversampled 1080 in this camera or is the 1080 line skipped? The reason I ask is that I mostly shoot 1080 for all of my content. I usually run EOS R, C300mkII and X-T3 and even if the 4K is a tad sharper in test patterns for the my way of shooting interviews and such at f1.8 to f2.8 and simple backgrounds the resolution gain in 4K does not really have any benefits considering the file size increase. Cheers

Thank you for this video! New SUB! Great Work. Which camera or system do you think would be the best for a budget of 5K? I have been looking for a camera for years now, currently creating content on my iPhone, and want to make the jump, to buy a "professional" / semi-professional camera. I have always been torn between Sony and Canon. I had my eye on the Sony A7III (hybrid) for years but couldn't make the jump as I wanted a flip-out screen and saw that Canon made them available. Finally, Canon came out with the newly released R5 and R6 but due to the current overheating issues, I am torn. I would like to purchase the R6 but I'm worried about the overheating. All I need is a reliable camera with a flip-out screen 10bit recording, dynamic range, and something not lacking in photography. In your professional option, which camera system do you think is best for my budget? Lenses are a huge part and know there are many options out there. I am a video first creator, photography second. - Thank you in advance.

Very interesting points. I think two important things are missing: the built-in ND filters in the C200, and the fact the C200 has 4 sound inputs, two of them XLR, and it has built in limiters, "safety tracks" too. For interviews this is super important. I am not saying the C200 is better at everything though, but these two things really matter (like IBIS, and face-af at 120p on the R5).

Hey dude, I think it would be better if you specified what the aperture and the focal length that you used on both lenses because, if you used the C200 in 24mm and the R5 in 50mm, the bokeh will be higher on the R5. So, I like to know if you used the exact same focal lenght and apperture on both to make that depth of field test fair. Great content by the way, keep makin!
@GriffinConway4 жыл бұрын
Hey Pedro, in most of the tests I specified focal length and aperture. In the section that is unlabeled where I am talking about depth of field, I both cameras were at f/4 and the c200 was at 24mm to match the 35mm on the r5. You are correct that this affects perceived depth of field and that’s why I mentioned it. Since the r5 is full frame you can shoot wider and still get a shallower depth of field. Thanks for checking out the video 👍

very useful and sensible comparison. Thanks a lot. It would be also very useful to compare a simple pan: a 180º smooth slow pan on a tripod, to see how irregular or steady is the video rendition. Probably a cinema camera would excel at doing a smooth pan compared to the EOS when shooting a static landscape with a panning movement.
@GriffinConway4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! The only reason I didn’t do any panning shots was I cranked the shutter speed up on the R5 to match exposure to the c200. The reason I did this was to avoid any extra glass in front of the lens on the R5, but it would have affected the way the smoothness of the video looked

@krane153 жыл бұрын
The difference between 8 bit and 10 bit should become much more evident once you began processing the footage where the 10 bit would hold together much better. As for tracking focus, the fact that the C-200 does not have that as a feature is not necessarily a weakness, since it is a cinema camera, which would defer the focus to a dedicated focus puller where creativity and impact requires a non-automated human touch. As for the R5 overheating. Well you can't ignore the laws of thermodynamics, and that's one reason why the industry doesn't simply switch over from using cinema cameras to mirrorless or DSLRs. Just like thin and light computers, they have their limit, so its should not come as a surprise you have to make compromises. In any event, great informative content as always.

Great review. I highly recommend getting the control ring adaptor! Also, I think most of the overheating is due to the CFexpress card. When I transfer my files using a CFexpress reader, the moment I pull out the card after unloading, it's really hot. The reader also heats up, which makes me think that a lot of the heat generated is the memory card overworking. I wonder if a company out there can figure out how to create a new CFexpress card that limits heat production. They both are SanDisk and work well with no issues otherwise. That along with perhaps a firmware update to lift the time limit, will add almost unlimited 4K 60/120. Anyway, hope to see more. Subbed

Nice video. But I just want to make sure you know there is no difference in "look" between full frame and super 35 other than the ability to slightly more easily get shallow depth of field. There is no difference in compression or field of view once you accomidate the sensor size with equivalent focal length.
@GriffinConway3 жыл бұрын
That’s what I’m talking about in the video. If you are going for say a medium shot from waist to top of the head and you don’t want to move your tripod...full frame will appear more shallow because you use a tighter focal length
@BryanBenoitPhoto4 жыл бұрын
Do you have the C300 M3? I wonder how the 4K 120fps between the C300 and the R5 compare. Besides the fact that one doesn't overheat and has a codec that is easy to work with.. I guess I already decided which one I will prefer... ;)

Griffin, your A-Roll headshot scenes, there is a ton of banding in the grey background. Is that because of 8-Bit recording or KZfaq compression?

@@GriffinConway on EOS R native ISO in Clog is 400, and when you shooting using ISO lower (320, 200) it just clipping highlights lower then it should (around 90% ), like in your footage. So, maybe your ISO setting was a bit lower. Just asking. Can you check?
@GriffinConway4 жыл бұрын
It was shot at the native iso of 400 and overexposed by about 3 stops. Then, once in post production I reduced the exposure by 3 stops using the raw controls in premiere pro. This was on both cameras at their native ISO’s with matched exposures

Incredible but although the R5 has that full frame look, it has ibis and 8k resolution, it still does not have that cinematic look, the canon c200 has more body and presence in the image looking from my 27" Nec monitor. Great job and thanks for sharing your experience. However I think the R5 can be a great B-camera for the C200. We look forward to the comparison between 1dxmark III vs Eos R5 soon. The Image Stabilization has that digital stabilization look. You can see the image in the background being wrapped and distorted at 7:03 Did you have Electronic Image Stabilization on at the same time?
@GriffinConway4 жыл бұрын
Electronic IS was off for this test. You will definitely see some image artifacting if you look hard enough, but I wasn’t walking super smooth in reverse on a trail going uphill at 35mm on the lens. So I think under the right circumstances it can be very beneficial to have in the camera.
