Will admit I was bad at explaining the resolution thing. I now know R6 and 1DX mark III are same resolution (and one commentor said the same sensor). I thought the mark III was higher for some reason. I accept the low resolution on that camera due to its speed and durability and have always wished for more resolution in that body. Professionals around me have actually left canon due to their lack of a 40+ megapixel sensor. Everyone has different needs but I know for me and colleagues a lot of clients want that higher resolution.

All due respect, but as a high end pro photog, your perspective is way removed from the world of beginners and students. Your students must be pretty rich indeed to afford a "little $2,500 camera". It's even a big chunk or challenge for many full time working folks to afford or justify. I'm thinking a used 6D which you maligned would likely fit most students' budgets better, considering the additional needs for lenses, etc. And they might even learn the basics of photography better (e.g. composition, exposure triangle, timing a shot) without the distractions of new state of the art electronic assists. These are great tools for the working pro who must deliver results, but crutches for a student who still needs to learn the basics. Nothing wrong with sharing your experience with the R6 but I think the whole "student camera" angle is highly skewed and misleading.

I mentor many college students who are actively deciding between 5D4, R6 and similar bodies. Yes I understand it’s expensive and yes I understand all those factors you put forward but many students in college at photography programs own cameras in this genre/level of quality. I know college students that own Nikon D5’s even. there is about 8 years worth of totally usable cameras for professional use or student use. However if you’re looking at buying a new camera currently I’d never suggest someone buy into a system that is possibly/probably on the way out. You also can still use old used lenses on this camera system via the adaptor like a $400 24-105 or $500 200 2.8 etc. that all being said, it’s my KZfaq with my opinions and we are here to gather multiple inputs for people making decisions and mine is just one of them. It’s almost never the case that an “affordable” (in my opinion) full frame body can keep up with the top of the line cameras available in the world, that’s the best reason to suggest it to college students. When I saved up from my retail job to buy a camera in college it was a joke compared to a D3/1D mark IV/1ds mark iii etc. I would have been stoked to have such a similar feature set to the 1dx mark iii for less than half the price.

@@BrettCarlsen to advise a student to spend all that cash on a 5dmk4 or an R6 is incredible. The Rp or even the R would be more than suitable cameras for students. They must have deep pockets.

As a professional coming from the 1DM Mark II with a 20.1 megapixel sensor (and now using the R6) this description isn’t accurate. Only a novice photographer would think that more megapixels means more professional. Sometimes you need less megapixel and more dynamic range and other time you need higher megapixel for cropping. Gear doesn’t make you professional, no matter what camera you own. Consistently getting paid to take professional images & video is what what makes someone professional.
@BrettCarlsen

Don’t disagree. I own two mark iii’s and one R5. Many I know that work professionally prefer the higher resolution, myself included. Why I said what I said, my clients also prefer above 20 megapixels. I’ve worked solely as a photographer and filmmaker for 10 years now. Different markets and clients require different things.

Thanks for the review, I tried the R6 along side my 5 D iv's and am waiting for 2x R6's to arrive. I've been shooting weddings professionally for 20 years and the R6 is perfect for this. My L glass worked even better on the R6 like my 135 f2 and 50 1.2. Even though the 5 d iv's are 30MP I mainly shoot weddings at the Medium raw setting which is 16.9MP so I'll be increasing my res on the R6.. haha cheers M

I completely agree with your observations. I’ve found new life in some finicky lenses. (50 1.2 being one of them) and if you’re cool with 20 mp (I’d be too for weddings) you’re going to be so happy. I will warn you in my experience I feel these chew batteries a little faster than the 5D4, that might be subjective, just my non scientific observations. Seems like an important one if you’re shooting weddings for long days though.

@@BrettCarlsen Most pros I know use dual battery grips. I'm holding off on the canon grip as $349 is way over priced. My three third party grips all worked well on My 5D4's, 5D3, and 6D. I just shot a football game in 32 degree weather and took 1,300 pictures and still was at 50% battery life. Maybe the R5 eats more battery power.

@@BrettCarlsen Just watched a video on the R5 by Tony Northrup's wife and she was getting like 200 pictures per charge on her R5. I know the viewfinder is a higher resolution and the 45mp processing must take much more power. I'm super happy with the battery life on the R6, but I will get a grip as I shoot portrait a lot and the grip makes it easier to shoot. I'm cleaning my studio and have listened to 8 youtube reviews on the R5/R6's and that's how I found your channel and with you being named Brett, it gives you a special treatment. 8-)

Why do we now need more than 20 megapixels? How did the photography world manage to survive for over a hundred years? People are already saying 30 megapixels isn’t enough, soon they will be saying the same for 40 and 50. People have been taking amazing pictures long before 45 megapixel cameras and will continue to do so.
@BrettCarlsen
@BrettCarlsen 3 жыл бұрын
Well film had pretty high resolution. Probably between 20-30 and that’s 35mm. Many shot medium format and large format for a multitude of reasons but resolution being one of them (myself included). So that’s not entirely true. It depends on your clients. Mine want high res for their output needs. So even a modest crop on 20mp wouldn’t be enough. I agree with what you’re saying and shot with a 6 and 12 megapixel camera for years. However if there is no technical downflaw (crazy grain, slow speed, etc) I don’t have much to complain about a better file/more output options.
@DTUFINOPhotography
@DTUFINOPhotography 3 жыл бұрын
20MP is more than enough... the 1DX MKIII uses the same sensor with the same resolution... I remember the days where people were getting 8MP cameras and were super happy. 20MP is more than enough, plus the file sizes aren't ridiculously large. This camera is more than enough for about 99% of the people out there. Also, the Regular EOS R is an amazing camera as well, sans dual card slot.
@BrettCarlsen

I second that. It’s the first game changer lens for me as I now rarely want my primes. I mean I still do for things but to carry one lens that does so much at f2 and so sharp is amazing for me. I shoot stills exclusively; animals and landscapes in and around Jackson Hole and Yellowstone. After looking at the R5 and R6 I got the R6 for its better low light performance and the "feel" of the images. I love the subtleties of mood that this captures! And I figured there would be an R5s (I didn't expect the R3!) that I'd be lusting after soon. I'm super happy with the R6 and don't feel that It's a step down from the R5, more of a step sideways. I've never had voice recording and don't shoot editorial or sports subjects, so for me, that wasn't a hit. Good review! (Except the sensor thing you caught in your comment.) :)
@BrettCarlsen

I definitely did not expect the r3 either. But agree an even higher resolution body will likely be coming. I’m so curious as to what the R1 will have. I’m assuming that will be the global shutter camera and in the short term the R3 is kind of like the A1/A9II direct competition but we will see. I also fear the R1 will have a very hefty price tag so maybe the R3 will be pretty reasonable.

Those are hovering closer to 30. About 26 or something. Which doesn’t seem like a big difference but I’ve always felt they were low too but the speed and high iso outweigh that. Now that being said for journalism and similar these are totally fine. For commercial work, magazine work, etc. I have many clients and colleagues that all want higher resolution. Many friends actually dumped Canon in recent years in favor of Sony and Nikon due to them offering 40+mp cameras. Again everyone’s needs are different and many colleagues would be fine with 20mp. Probably should have clarified this a bit more. Still new to KZfaq (edit: I’m wrong. It’s 20mp too. As pointed out in another comment)

Thank you! So the electronic is completely silent for one. Also it can fire at 20 frames per second as opposed to 12 FPS of the mechanical. However electronic shutters (this one included) can introduce rolling shutter which can warp or distort fast moving objects. Therefore I have not used it especially due to mechanical being so quiet. I will use it on film/video sets that I photograph on as then I will have complete silence and people should not be moving enough to distort. Hope that helps!

But seriously if you’re learning there is no bad options out there. Find what fits in your budget and make work non stop. That’s the most important thing. If getting this camera takes you 6 months of saving and the other options take 1 month of saving. Well then save for a month and spend 5 months learning. You can as well. I’ve defended the statement a few times on here. Multiple college students i mentor have asked me about and are shopping for the camera is why I suggested that use. Have also suggested it to professionals

How would you mark the R6 compared to the 5Dmark4 for allround use (only photography)? Which one would you pick?

Great question. I think the R6/R5 are better in virtually every way for photography. I’m personally a big fan of optical viewfinders and I’d still pick the R6 or 5 over my mark 4 (I sold mine to get the 5D4 and didn’t regret it at all). Edit: sold my 5D4 to get the R5**

Brett Carlsen Hey Brett, now I’m confused. You sold your 5Dm4 to get an R5 or do i misread your reply?

My bad. Typo. I sold my 5D4 to get the R5 and despite my liking optical viewfinders more than EVF I still heavily prefer the R5/6 to the 5D mark IV. Haha my bad. Get the 6!

I am disappointed that no one is talking about low light fast action sports(friday night football or basketball in bad gym lighting). I need good quality, low noise photos. Like you said this works for pro or college sports. Those are day time or in perfectly lit gyms. Can you do a review for us low light sport action shooters?

Ugh. I know. I tried. The one game I took it to (I don’t shoot much high school anymore) was a literal hurricane like rain storm and I didn’t want to destroy a borrowed camera. iso etc. I feel I would have no worries. This is NOT based on R6 but on other mirrorless or live view mode tests of canon’s cameras - I find DPAF does quite well in low light. That’s not real world or an opinion I’d rely on. Basketball you have the added benefit of being able to rely on face tracking a bit more than you could in HS football due to helmets etc. the camera is incredible so I’d venture you’d have no issue. If you’re explicitly shooting sports I personally find the OVF 1DX style cameras a bit easier to track sports with. Again that’s personal opinions. Many friends (and myself) have got great stuff with R5 and R6.

@@BrettCarlsen Thank you. I currently use a Canon 1Dx mark 1 and a 5D3. Our gyms are old and suck and I struggle with these two cameras. So many good vibes about the R6, I think i need to give it a shot. If all else fails, it will make a great wildlife and bird camera!

Your files will 100% be better. I can guarantee that. I personally think you’ll have fantastic luck with it in every other way too. But I’d rather under promise when suggesting someone buy a camera haha. My best answer is, if someone told me you have to work full time with R6 bodies for stills. I could without issue. And that’s saying so much for a “budget” full frame body. Personally I bought the r5 for my needs and clients, personally for peak action sports I prefer the 1DX mark III. But again I could replace them all with R6’s and do my job. Aka, you’ll be stoked. But definitely pick up spare batteries. Everyone I know finds they use more than other cameras and I concur. I use 2-3 for an NFL game. Including a lot of pregame etc.

@@BrettCarlsen That is awesome. Thx. I should have mentioned, I shoot with at least f2.8. Also the 50mm and 85mm 1.8 for basketball. Where do you shoot? I had a chance to shoot a couple 49er games a while back but no luck getting a pass for a few years now. I have 2 mountain west games coming up to shoot. I cant wait, since there is no sports here until 2021. Now if i can just get my hands on the R6 to play with at these upcoming college games! Be safe out there.

I’ve covered the NFL for about 8 seasons now. Usually do about 15-20 games per season. Normal years I also cover 6-10 D1 NCAAF too. But this year just the NFL and my normal commercial and editorial work. Big apertures help a ton with any focus system. Hope you like the camera! I really think you will. I love my R5 and still in shock I can shoot the NFL with a “5D”.
