I have two issues with the x-t4 which might make me switch to the R7. One is the autofocus. I shoot many school programs and sports and it just can't keep up. My old 7D Mark II does a better job, but I went away from it to the x-t4 because I wanted something lighter among all the other reasons, like touch screen, flippy screen etc. But I find myself in certain situations grabbing the 7D II as much or more often which makes me wonder why I got the x-t4 in the first place. If there's lots going on and the scene is busy or there is stuff in between myself and the subject, the x-t4 doesn't handle it well. The other reason and maybe this is a flaw in my camera, but the dang thing overheats alot. If I'm busy at a sports event and shooting frequently, it gets dang hot and gives me the warning. Sometimes it doesn't make it through the whole game. I do shoot a lot of bursts to get the entire sequence or play. I can shoot over 1000 pics with the 7D ii and no heating issues. The x-t4 gets to 500 and I'm pretty much done. Maybe I just shoot way too many pictures at games and stuff, who knows.

I must admit I don't use my X-T4's heavily and more for static images, so I don't have overheating issues. However, like you I find the tracking not as good as the 7DII and nowhere near as good as the R5 and R6. There is due to be a serious announcement from Fuji in the next day or so: hopefully that will suggest a new generation of XT-5 bodies - rumour has it there are two: one for video and a high MP unit for stills. So, we shall see...

Yeah Fuji autofocus still has some catching up to do in the X-Trans IV generation. X-Trans V is set to debut today, hopefully they made major strides! As far as overheating, that's not something I've heard before, but that doesn't mean it's an isolated problem. I use an X-T30 and I only experience heat when shooting 4k video, which is why it has recording limits, so it's definitely possible that it can't handle the bursts at the rate that you are shooting. I wouldn't say that you are shooting too many pictures. If the tool you are using can't keep up with the job, then it's not an effective tool for you.. I can't imagine a contractor giving up on building a deck because his saw wouldn't cut the wood; he'd get the saw that does the job. You should always use the camera you need to get the job done, and if that will end up being the R7, then I'm sure you'll be happy with it!

Thank you for your analysis of the R7 and X-T4. I have a lot of Canon gear, including the 7DII as well as a couple of X-T4's. I am a stills-only photographer and I would prefer to see a camera of this type concentrate on being the best APS-C photo camera to replace my 7DII. Initially, I was quite keen on this camera, but after delving more into it, my enthusiasm has somewhat tempered... If the intent was to continue the theme of a pro-level crop sensor body, with top-end sensor, great buffer and weather proofing. I would have paid for a stacked/backlit sensor, faster cards and better buffer. This is a great camera at a certain level, but not a replacement for a 7DII as a professional-quality APS-C camera. I wanted a R7 to build on the legacy for the 7DII as a pro wildlife camera, this is a cheapened down version, Canon Australia have even classed it as an enthusiast body, so in that vein I would have called this an R9, equivalent to a 90D (enthusiast) perhaps, with the R10 being equivalent to a XXXD (consumer) body, with a XXXXD (basic) body to come at some stage. The lack of BSI and stacking on the sensor is a lost opportunity IMHO for a camera in a market at the high end - where I was expecting it to be placed. More cameras, (esp. Sony, a big rival) are bringing those in. My Sony Rx-10MkIV, vintage 2017 has a stacked sensor already! Also, when Canon said that the R7 has LESS weather sealing than the R5 and R6, that seems counter-intuitive, considering it is likely to be subjected to the element by pro users. Then we get to the buffer and cards. Certainly, considering the frame rate, and the benefits of shooting RAW, it needs a serious buffer, and I'm not convinced it actually has that. I think that for the function of this camera, a pair of dual CF Express Type A card slots, with backward compatibility to SD cards (like Nikon has used), would have been a winner, and might have put less stress on the buffer. In terms of ergonomics, I would have liked the ON/OFF switch on the left, like the R6 and R5, and I DO like the distinct switch from video to stills. Like you, I hope that the menus and settings remain separate for each mode - like the Fuji X-T4. I too would like to see the return of the ISO wheel on the right. The movement of the rear control wheel I am undecided about; however, I am disappointed that the back buttons for focus and exposure locks have been moved: moving them just adds another level of change when moving between bodies. I have less issue with the loss of the top EVF, but a higher-resolution EVF and LCD for shooting would be very welcome. Finally, no sign of a battery grip yet, given the way that one is likely to go through batteries, and the light weight of the camera body, with a heavy super telephoto attached, the improvement in balance would be welcome...
@benzionsugarman

Wow, this is an extremely in depth comment! While I agree that many of these features would be wonderful to have, I feel this camera (naming convention aside) is more of a replacement/counterpart to the xxD line rather than a direct replacement for the 7Dmkii. The 7D was introduced in 2014 at 1800, which is almost $2200 these days (inflation adjusted). The R7 is going to cost only $1500. I think that you’re seeing this as well and are rightfully disappointed. As you are invested in Fuji as well, maybe the XH2 will have more of the features you desire instead of the R7, assuming that Fuji can finally crack autofocus? Although I believe fujirumors broke the sad news that it will NOT be a stacked sensor in the camera either, but it will be BSI.
@trevor9934
@trevor9934 2 жыл бұрын
@@benzionsugarman Essentially that is rather my point - I have absolutely no objection to the creation of an enthusiast-level, XXD replacment, but they could have named this thing a R9 and kept the R7 for the pro model when it comes out. This may seem trivial or nit-picking, but the numbering conventions used by Canon are consist with their DSLR models (sans XXD and XXXD or the totally confusing Rebel ID's). So, to stay in that mode an R7 should have been a pro model - so, I am wondering if there will BE such a beast one day? 🤨
@trevor9934
@trevor9934 2 жыл бұрын
@@benzionsugarman Thank you for your kind and informative response. While I have a couple of X-T4's, I will hold back from investing more right now. The rumour that there is a replacement for the 5Ds or 5DsR is encouraging. I have a 5DsR and love it - it works for me even with wildlife! So, if this rumoured body is in excess of 100MP, then I might wait for that as I would hope it would have at least all of the features of the R7, and maybe then an upgraded sensor with BSI or stacking. At over 100MP, it would give me more MP in crop mode than the R7, so could kill two birds with one stone for wildlife and landscapes...

Even if the R mount Canon were the king of aps-c it is a king without many clothes unless large oversized ones are borrowed from his cousin. The 18-45mm dress you can get is pretty skimpy not covering much at 18mm and slow. Every one keeps telling us photography is all about the lenses so very early days yet. Nowadays it is all about the list of video specs for the blog reviewers I suppose but not much interest to photographers. I am finding it really hard to get my head around what they were thinking about with this throwback kit lens. m43 has its tiny but splendid 12-32mm and Fuji the very capable 15-45mm so what is this narrow view short reach 18-45mm mm creature all about?
@benzionsugarman
@benzionsugarman 2 жыл бұрын
I wonder if all the R&D was focused on creating the cameras themselves to have amazing specs, while the lenses ended up being an afterthought. I have a rumor roundup video for those cameras and I’m super excited to see what they have! Unfortunately I think the price will be prohibitive for most of those seeking to buy the canon, so the X-T4 seemed like the fair comparison. It’s also interesting to see this brand new camera having to go toe-to-toe with a 2 year old camera, and still have the Fuji hold it’s own. I think the R7, while impressive in some ways, is a little late to the game. Canon seems to be flailing a little going against Sony for FF, and now they are trying to re-enter APS-C, but with a product that may not be able to hold up. Sales, not specs, will be the true indicator here of whether this line continues.

canon apsc is smaller than fujis (1.6 vs 1.5 crop) - canon has no good lenses for apsc - if u use adapter, why not use cheaper dslr? 70d 80d 90d 7d and so on. canons good glas is for full frame only - so most people will be happier with eos r or rp and 1-2 really good rf lenses.

The video specs on the R7 outclass any of the canon DSLRs or the R/RP. Plus you get ibis, the higher speed mechanical shutter, and all of this in a smaller, lighter package than any of the cameras you named. Yes, the glass is currently an issue, but I'd say that if you want a modern camera in the price range of the R7, it's hard to beat! However, coming from someone who tends to stick to the lower budget end of things (I currently use an X-T30 Mk 1), the XXD series or the older R models can be a good place to start too. It all depends on what your needs are!

@@benzionsugarman the bitrate on r7 is 340 Mbps | 42.5 MB/s - this is okish but not exactly great. bitrate on eos r is 480Mbps or 60Mb per secons. So we can expect a better image quality in video for the eos r. video quality on r7 is better than on 80d 90d, but in my opinion they are all not that great compared to black magic pocket cinema camera, or panasonic sh1... but the lower data rates make it possible to store video on cheaper sd-cards. ure x-t30 is in my view a better camera, because u have a way better lens selection.
@benzionsugarman
@benzionsugarman Жыл бұрын
Actually I hadn't realized - the R7 isn't capable of All-I, so yeah the 30fps All-I on the R is useful to have! However, from what I can tell, the IPB recording on the R7 is 170 vs 120 on the R, so recording in that more common format will be better on the R7, purely from a bitrate standpoint. The 340mbps is for 60fps, which the R doesn't offer at all I think? So we're getting a bit more flexiblity when it comes to shooting speeds in 4k from the R7. When comparing the BMPCC, you lose the autofocus entirely, and the S1H you lose the dual pixel phase detect autofocus, so it really depends on the needs of the shooter. These cameras are both excellent in their own right. As a mainly manual-focus shoote myselfr, these are both options I would consider personally for the future. Either way, this video is meant to address APS-C, which was most recently dominated by the XH2S anyway (came out after this video though!). However, even there, the R7 will definitely still have it's users, whether for reasons of size, budget, or already being in the ecosystem. I'd love to make a video of best cameras for different types of users in certain price ranges in the future though, and this conversation will definitely give me some points to use!

@@benzionsugarman yes ure right. r7 is an okeyish hybrid, not comparable to real cinema cameras like bmpcc4k/6k, sigma fp with recorder, panasonic s5 with recorder s1h, z cam and so on. when u watch footage of a bmpcc 4k - it blows r7 out of the water - braw gives so much more room for color grading (and its a cheaper camera). fuji xh2s is a very interesting camera - way higher bitrates than r7, but still not a real cinema camera, if it could shoot internal braw i would buy it, but the extra price and inconvinience of the recorder makes it less desirable to me. cinema cameras have dual native isos, so video looks way cleaner in many situations and u get way better dynamic range. but i will wait and see how good the internal prores of xh2s will be. perhaps its good enough for me. if not i will buy the bmpcc 6k pro, i think.

mmm I gave it a dislike because you make quite some mistakes. The fuji does 30 fps too. The higher megapixels is not an advantage because so far non of the aps-c lenses were sharp enough to make use of that. Also lens selection: native for aps-c they have three now vs. dozens of native lenses for fuji. And you can use canon lenses for fuji as well, so if you adapt it's equal. Also the bitrate for video is quite a bit higher for Fuji....
@benzionsugarman
@benzionsugarman 2 жыл бұрын
Ah, you’re right I should have specified that it could do the 30fps if you’re ok with an additional 1.25 crop. I was going off of normal conditions only. The higher megapixels may not be an advantage at launch, but assuming the cameras sell well, there will definitely be more lenses to come that can take advantage of it. And yes, I strongly agree with the native lens lineup point and I bring that up as a pro for fuji; however, while canon lenses are adaptable to fuji with some of the AF adapters, performance is less than ideal in some cases, while with canon’s lenses adapted to their own cameras, performance is superior to adapting to fuji. The bitrate for the r7 is lower, but only 340 vs 400 at 10 bit, so the fuji beats it there but not by a ton. As I said in the video, there’s reasons for buying each camera. I don’t think the R7 is necessarily better or worse as a total package, it depends on the individual purchaser’s needs. I’m going to stick with fuji though!
