This is Caoineadh Cú Chulainn, written by Bill Whelan, and performed by Anthony Murphy on a low D whistle. Dedicated to the ancestors who built Newgrange in the Boyne Valley over five thousand years ago.

I should say that while this is a lament, it is also a celebration. While the ancestors have passed on to the next life, they are also ever present. They are present in us. And we too are future ancestors. We're all part of the unending river of ancestors that flows back into the distant past.

Love your vids AM. I was wondering if you could help me find some info about the meaning of the tri- spiral ingravings. Their design seems much like rings in a Galaxy. The closet of a these are Andromeda and Traingulun. Do you have or kno of any research of this symbol my portray a connection between the Milky way and the befor mentioned galaxy's? Hope you can help even if I am completely wrong.

Very impressive playing, Anthony...must be fun bending those notes on a Low D Whistle. Saw this performed by the Riverdance troupe with BW on the Uilleann Pipes at Wolf Trap near DC. Unforgettable. And thanks for those pictures of Newgrange 1968. Ch ch ch changes...

As the mortal remains of our dear Aunt were returning to her home to be waked for 3 days, I was asked at the last moment to play a Boolavogue instrumental piece to herald her home reverently, So I turned to the great works of Anthony Murphy and played his piece, it was received so well that this lament played by Anthony, was the only sound as her coffin was lowered into its final resting place 3 days later - I invite you to go listen to "Boolavogue". .. Both pieces were a very positive addition to a sad occurrence. - Thank You Anthony

No doubt in my mind that our ancient ancestors would love hearing this echoing on a fine day along the Boyne river valley!

I love that so many of these places and artefacts have survived for us to ponder. This reminded me of a couple of things. The standing stone circles on Scotland's west coast Arran island (at Machrie) that we visited (and videod)with a Russian girl on holiday. This is where I took one of my favourite photos: my 4-year-old grandson standing with his back to the camera while he raised his hand high to make a shadow on a 4000 year old giant standing stone. I wondered if a little boy had done the same thing on the same spot so many years ago. The grass-topped, chambered tomb brought to mind a similar, but smaller one we saw on Orkney a couple of years ago. I wonder what people in 4 thousand years will find of us, and if the standing stones will still be standing. Will a little child make a shadow then?

This evoked wonderful memories of visiting there many years ago, before there were so many restrictions. Also my memories of many visits to Glendalough when it was still completely natural ( Free and without a visitors centre) and rushed guided tours.
