I can understand why people might do that though. If a whole pack of coyotes were to attack you and your pet, it would be a terrifying experience, and many people would freeze up or run away purely on instinct. Considering that humans are not only larger and farther away from the ground, they can also climb, making harder targets to kill than a pet would be. The coyotes would more than likely just go after the pet, and there's not much most owners could do, or even would have the wherewithal to think of in the first place.

Glad for happy ending but I noticed the harness, why does a human , usually just over 100 pounds, take a harness which was created for animals to pull many times their weight in buggies, sleds etc, put them on an animal not yet trained to walk nicely by their side , “especially” a dog bred to pull who lives and loves to pull, and never realize that if that dog ever decides to go, that person will not be able to do a thing about it. I’ve seen a tiny, less than 100 pound, girl trying to walk her two huskies on harnesses. Then a squirrel happened. So grateful a car wasn’t racing down my street at that very moment. But I seriously love this guy and his fur family

I think it's just the Eastern coyote subspecies. This was in Nova Scotia. If you're used to Western coyotes, such as those found in California and Mexico, they aren't as big and fluffy, by comparison. BTW, the "coywolf" is a thing. The coyotes in the Northeastern U.S. and Southeastern Canada are taking on wolf like characteristics and behaviours. They can weigh as much as 70 pounds or more.

Coyotes are very clever. I had a job hunting coyotes that were eating pets and small livestock in Montana in the late 80s. The coyotes had been driven out of their normal range by forest fires the year before and had found the rural and low-density suburban environment, with easy to catch domestic animals to their liking. I can say from considerable personal experience that pound for pound coyotes are more formidable than dogs and when they hunt in a group they can take down just about any dog.

I've read that this is a myth. Coyotes are playful and curious. They play with the dog then leave but if the dog follows and gets too close to the den then it is destroyed. I doubt the Coyote is that smart. It is smart but not that smart.

Coyotes are really weak, one lone coyote is no match for even a 12 year old kid. A regular size dog would totally kick a coyotes ass badly in a fight unless it was in a pack, and even then, the regular size dog would probably survive the attack with injuries. They are only a threat to very small things like rat terriers, cats and chihuahuas.
