I think the Secret Wars figures were great in quality and design. Especially the design! Their muscle and build ratios were well done

Every kid in the world: this hologram shield is awesome. Young Michael: Why doesn't he have the exact matching shield???

If it was a hologram, like the Visionaries, I would have been into it. I hated the lenticular viewer shields that they all came with.

In 1985, I was 15 and very heavy in Marvel. When those figures came out, I was ecstatic. When I got a few if them, I was happy, but I was somewhat disappointed as well with Cap’s shield as well as the fact that they were very limited in notion. I didn’t play with them, but having them on your desk while doing your homework made it more fun. I know that sounds goofy, but I was a young nerd back then and kept to myself. True, they’re nothing like the Superpowers figures, but, at that time, it was still a great thing. Kids today have NO IDEA what it was like for us as they’ve got everything made today like it was always done this way. Thank you so much for this video, Michael! You just awakened so many fond memories for me. I really appreciate what you’re doing!

I kinda wondered the same thing about the sheilds. I got one of those Dollar General cruddy articulation Caps to donate his shield to my Secret Wars Cap. It has a handle or clips on to his arm.

Not just shields. Shields that showed everyone's secret identities. And yes, even as 10-year-olds, we were dumbfounded by the decision. But that Tower of Doom playset remains my favorite playset from the '80s not called Castle Grayskull. And honestly, I never thought they were low-quality beyond the fact that so many details were done via bad paint. That black-costume Spider-Man that came with the styrofoam-glider thing was amazing at the time.

Having been spoiled by the earlier Mego Cap, who came with a very nice shield, I was quite annoyed with my Secret Wars Cap's lack of one. To compensate, he was issued G.I. Joe's SHARC submarine/jet, which he fit perfectly, and also Luke Skywalker's brown Jedi robe, for covering up on arctic missions. Until Super Powers' Green Lantern was born, Cap lead all my forces into battle. :)
@Mister80Retro10 жыл бұрын
Iron Man was my favorite from that line! For some reason I never got my hands on Captain America, but I got the other ones. I just did a video where I found all my super powers and secret wars figures. Dunno what the H I did with the shields. Great memories though.

Being a 10 year old in 85 we had this discussion. We liked the comic and the line but were all pissed about the shield

I didn't start collecting until 1994, but surprisingly, when I did, the local Toys R Us still had a few of the Secret Wars figures left among a very good selection of Super Powers that had ended in 1992. I don't think they had a Captain America though. I still have the Secret Wars Iron Man, Wolverine, and Magneto. I think Magneto has some damage to his nose, as my kids played with the early figures heavily. And I don't have the shields to any of them left.
@douglasnieblas74 Жыл бұрын
I originally had Captain America, Spider-Man, and Doctor Doom. I hated that the painted details on all three rubbed off by simply touching the figures. I was never one to play roughly with my figures but yet the red stripes on Cap, the webbing on Spidey, and the details on Doc Doom’s chest soon rubbed away. It was definitely a QA issue with these.
@user-do2ev2hr7h2 жыл бұрын
TBH I find the fact that Iron Man has a gun to be more egregious. At least they got the type of weapon right for Cap. That said, I think my homemade fix would probably be to attach the new shield to the front of the existing one.
@CaptainArrrgh9 жыл бұрын
I got that Cap for my 8 Birthday, along with the Motorcycle and Black Spiderman. Also, if you don't like the shield he came with, enough, you could glue the other one over it.

I just used the insert with his shield image/face on it. I figure thats why they included that design. close enough, I really didnt mind that it was a different shape it was still his shield to me.
@jasperswarp3 жыл бұрын
I used the shield from the first ever Captain America figure from ToyBiz (the one with the spring loaded shield firing action) the shield is the right size for the secret wars figure but has a slightly too big wrist attaching piece, just attach a small elastic band to the wrist piece and the figure is complete.

Secret Wars, another favorite of mine back then!! It seemed like I was the only one in my area who liked those while everyone else had Transformers, GI Joe, He-man. I always though Kang was a cool figure, and Baron Zemo who I didn't know the name of for years.
@nachogroucho2 жыл бұрын
I still to this day think the secret wars figures are some of the best looking marvel figures ever produced but it was obvious they didn't want to put alot of money into the line.

Retrobrother...I call you that because we are kindred spirits, I am a huge 80's toy collector too, was born in 1980 and loved my toys. For Captain America I have been trying to buy a cheap figure from the 1990 line to give him a correct shield, also I bought a Dr Doom from the 1990 line to have a cape for SW Doom, but the best thing I did so far was buy a Lord Dread from Captain Powers and used his cape for Magneto. I could not stand Magneto not having a cape.

"When Captain America throws his mighty shield, you'll get your punk ass knocked out for real!" That tower looks like a nice template for a Cobra base or outpost or something. Also, the fact that you have Robotech action figures is awesome.

An easy way to make handles for the shield is to use two twist ties and glue them set apart on the inner part of the shield, one to hold onto the upper forearm the other for his wrist or hand. The twists tied can then be molded to suit various poses by the metal i side them. I've done this for two of my Marvel universe Caps and a Cap movie series US Agent. Works great. Cheers :)

It's a clip on cape like a Super Powers figure cape. The only thing is that it will never fit Dread again as the Secret Wars have thicker necks but it clipe on perfectly. I bought two extra Dreads just to give both my Magneto's capes.

On ebay if you are looking for any Official Mattel Secret War Captain America shield they got for $30 to $100 but I found that Happy Meal toy shield new in a bag for 2 bucks! God you are right my figure Captain America looks SOOOOOOO good and packed away my old shield as I also hated that flip images I mean as a kid why do Captain America wanted show the whole world who he look like under the mask? Same with the other Spidey? Ironman WHY? Also why Spiderman need a shield as I never have him using it I just used a white box string for him to swing around or used my mother's hair net to capture the bad guys.

They were my favorite toys as a kid even beating out star wars. Luckily I had a few stickers of caps shield or star that my mom stuck to a piece of paper cut it out and it fit in my shield. Looked better than the lenticular thing it came with.

I love the Secret Wars action figures!! Just received the entire first series (and Daredevil) last week, courtesy of ebay. But, I must admit that I thought the shields gimmick was unnecessary and stupid though. I also thought that it was odd that the Dr.Doom and Magneto figures did not include capes. I understand that Mattel was trying to cut costs but...GOOD GRIEF!!

I thought I had a pic in my photobucket of it. Apparently not. I'll look when I get home. Dollar General and Family Dollar and I saw them at Big Lots the other day as well. They have Spidey, Iron Man, and Captain America. 5 pts of articulation, but the shield is cool.

I think the Lego items that are out now is the first time a toy company has had the rights to both Marvel and DC since the days of mego. ... I like secret wars but feel they flubbed up on leaving out some main folks .. HULK, Thor etc. where Super Powers really did great at making the main stays of DC, with what I feel the biggest miss was Batgirl, and catwoman ... those two would have been so awesome

Back then, I was trying to get every super hero I could as there were not many out at that time. It was just at the beginning so I got some of these and some of the Super Powers line. I think the Iron Man is the only one I have left as I replaced these as much better figures came along just as did the DC ones. I think the Iron Man I kept just as I have numerous different Iron Man armors.

@@themysteriouscatperson9483 Rhodey became Iron Man in issue #170 in May of 1983 and wore the armor off and on for the next 22 issues while Tony was drying out and trying to take Stark Industries back from Obadiah Stane. Apparently you need to be educated about the 1980s. To answer your inquiry about the shield, I'll relate to you a rather famous quote cocaine is a wonderful drug. Cocaine explains just about everything from the 1980s! Just ask Stephen King or Jean-Claude Van Damme or Dolph Lundgren and maybe Steven Seagal;). And by the way Tony Stark is not Iron Man with that action figure that's when roads became Iron Man
