i swear to god man, barbossa has got to be one of the best characters in this franchise. especially in curse of the black pearl, he was such a good fuckin villain; he was scary, yet relatable, and the scene when he died was actually really touching. in the sequels he becomes way less scary but you still keep that sense that he could betray the good guys at any moment (a role that jack played during the first). idk man, i just have so many feelings about this character, geoffrey rush was phenomenal in this role and i think he deserved at least some nomination for it. and this has got to be one of the best comebacks in history.

After recently re-watching all four movies for the first time in a number of years, Barbossa became my favorite character in the series

Fun fact, the actors didn't know Geoffrey Rush was returning, they simply did the scene without knowing someone would be coming down the stairs, their reactions were legit.

Fun fact: Geoffrey Rush was actually fatally shot in the first movie and died offscreen. The actors were genuinely surprised when they saw that he rose back from the dead in this scene.

I remember watching this as a child in theaters. I was devastated by Jack's death and then Barbossa arrived and I went nuts! Fun fact: Barbossa's return wasn't written in anybody's script, so their reactions are real! :)

0:11 You can see that faint recoil in all of them when they realized who it was. Them and the audience were like WTF?! I loved replaying this shot over and over just to see their reactions. XD The fact is, they did everything they could to hide Geoffrey Rush's appearance just so they could get everyone's legit reaction when he descended the stairs and reprised his role. If anything, the look on everyone's face is so priceless and authentic that it was completely perfect when they got this scene.

Ill never forget this in the theater. My jaw almost hit the floor. The entire theater was like "WHAAAATT!!!!????". The best moment Ive ever had in a movie theater and the moat epic entrance in movie history in my opinion.

Jack is the essential pirate but when I picture a pirate captain in my head, it's usually closer to Hector

Man, I remember being in the fourth grade and my oldest brother taking me to see this. He knew how much I loved Pirates, so he convinced my mom to take me. I'll never forget the theater just cheering and gasping because of the shock.

I'll never forget SCREAMING IN THE MOVIE THEATER when this happened. God rewatching this gives me Goosebumps.

What's great about it is that even the cast wasn't told about Barbosa's return, (they told them it was Zoe Saldana's character who was supposed to come down the stairs) their shocked reactions are legit

For those questioning the "the actors didn't know that Barbossa is coming" story: you guys *DO* know that a scene can have multiple takes, right? And that the movie editors can pick which take to use for which scene? It's so simple: just use the _first_ take of the actors' reactions to Barbossa's appearance to get their genuinely surprised reactions.

Oddly Dead Man's Chest was the first of the Pirates series I saw. I think the first movie slipped by me and my family, but we went and saw this one when it came out. Still remember this moment, being confused but intrigued by the new guy. He looked cool but who was he? The Pearl used to be his ship? We didn't know who he was but clearly the other characters did so Geoffrey Rush left an impression on me even in this brief moment. Left you wanting to know more.

Then he died, then he was resurrected by a goddess, then he went to the underworld, then he imprisoned the same goddess who resurrected him. He then went on to get himself a royal pardon and become a captain of a vessel entrusted with acquiring the fountain of youth for the king of england. He then kills blackbeard, takes his ship and crew, and to wrap it all up, he dies by rescuing his daughter, falling to the bottom of the ocean and crushed by the weight of the sea. It all connects to Calypso, y'all. He's connected to her because she resurrected him in the first place.

When I saw this in the theater, yes, everyone went nuts when they saw Barbossa, but they REALLY went insane when the end credits started rolling and they knew they had to wait a whole year to see what was going to happen. 😁

When you come back to school after being sick

I was taken back in shock when he started talking. My mind was racing with “HOW!? YOU WERE DEAD!” But then I remembered the first movie had undead pirates and this one had them too so my mind just accepted it, but when he gave that last laugh, I got super excited to know they were doing one of my favorite things in storytelling, by bringing back a supposedly dead character who was also a bad guy and is now the new ray of hope for the next part in the story! AAAGH!!! I LOVED THAT MOMENT IN MY LIFE!!

Back then when the best parts of movies were not spoiled by internet or the trailers in self Curiosity:The return of Barbossa was kept in secret so well, that not even the actors knew it. So I can say, the surprise reaction of Elizabeth, Will and company, are 100% real
